    Notizen: Poly(t-butyl methacrylate-b-isoprene-b-t-butyl methacrylate) block copolymers have been synthesized in a controlled manner by anionic techniques. The block copolymers demonstrated predictable chemical composition and stereochemistry, and narrow molecular weight distributions. The addition of a polar solvent was required after complete conversion of the diene block in order to preserve the high 1,4 microstructure of the diene phase and to facilitate the efficient crossover to the poly(t-butyl methacrylate) lithium enolate. Thermomechanical analysis (TMA) of the triblock copolymers demonstrated a microphase separated morphology. The glass transition temperatures of the diene phase and acrylic phase were approximately -70 and 120°C, respectively. Cast films of the block copolymers from polar and nonpolar solvents were optically clear and elastic.

    Notizen: The multicomponent equilibrium theory for ion-exchange columns (chromatography) has been extended to systems accompanied by reactions in either or both phases. Based on the concept of coherence of concentration waves in the original theory, the proposed approach includes a systematic way to determine the thermodynamic variance and a general mathematical formulation to construct the composition path grid by means of numerical techniques. With proper adjustments, this approach can be applied as well to adsorption columns involving reactions. As a practical example, a comparison of predicted and observed effluent histories for an anion-exchange system with dissociation-association reactions is shown.

    Notizen: Fluid absorption studies have been made for a polyetherimide thermoplastic film and a unidirectional composite of the thermoplastic with graphite fibers immersed in water, JP4 jet fuel, ethylene glycol, and hydraulic fluid. The changes in the weight, thickness, and tensile properties were measured for the film. The changes in the flexural properties of the composite were measured for specimens whose fiber orientation was transverse to their length. Only the hydraulic fluid, which caused an erosion or dissolving of the resin at the specimen surface, affected the film's properties. Both the water and the hydraulic fluid affected the flexural properties of the composite, due to capillary absorption along the fiber-resin interface.

    Notizen: The Ile1 analog of the polypentapeptide of elastin, (L · Ile1-L · Pro2-Gly3-L · Val4-Gly5)n, abbreviated as Ile1-PPP, was synthesized with n 〉 100 to determine the effect of the increased hydrophobicity of the pentamer resulting from Val1 replacement by Ile1 on the previously characterized inverse temperature transition of the polypentapeptide of elastin (PPP). Ile1-PPP, dissolved in water at 4°C, was found to aggregate, forming a viscoelastic coacervate on raising the temperature. The onset of aggregation was 8°C for Ile1-PPP, as compared to 24°C for PPP. Characterization by CD demonstrated an increase in intramolecular order on raising the temperature from 8°C to 25°C, and demonstrated similar conformations for PPP and Ile1-PPP before and after their respective transitions. The CD-characterized transition also occurred at a temperature some 15°C lower than that of PPP. By means of 20-Mrad γ-irradiation cross-linking of the Ile1-PPP coacervate, an elastomeric matrix was formed with an elastic modulus, similar to that of 20-Mrad cross-linked PPP. The temperature dependence of elastomeric force of cross-linked Ile1-PPP showed an abrupt increase from essentially zero at 8°C to three-quarters of full force at 10°C and essentially full force by 20-25°C. This development of elastomeric force for the more hydrophobic Ile1-PPP matrix, which parallels the increase in intramolecular order characterized by the CD studies, also occurs at a temperature some 15°C lower than that for the PPP matrix. Thus, in these elastomeric polypeptides, development of elastomeric force is coupled to an inverse temperature transition, the temperature of which depends inversely on the hydrophobicity of the constituent pentamer. It appears that a series of elastomeric polypeptide biomaterials are possible in which the temperature over which elastomeric force develops can be varied.

    Notizen: A 400 kV high-resolution electron microscope has been used in the surface profile imaging mode to observe surfaces and surface reactions directly in real time. The processes studied include: the formation of surface oxides on Pd and Ag and on In-compound semiconductors; surface reduction and metallization, diffusion and accretion on oxide surfaces; and structural rearrangements in small metal particles. It is concluded that the technique can provide unique information about surface phenomena.

    Notizen: Solutions of polystyrene of molecular weight 4.5 × 106 and 8.4 × 106 in mixed solvents of carbon tetrachloride/methanol were filtered through track-etched mica membranes at low membrane velocities. The unperturbed hydrodynamic radius of the polymer was always larger than the pore radius. The reflection coefficient σ, defined as the fraction of polymer held back by the membrane, was determined from material balances as a function of solvent flow rate per pore q, volume percent CCl4 of the solvent, and polymer concentration C0. In the dilute region (C0 〈 C*) σ was found to depend primarily on q and was essentially independent of chain size (or solvent goodness), molecular weight, and pore radius. In the semidilute region (C0 〉 C*) σ decreased significantly as C0 was increased.
