    Notizen: A semiempirical method was used to calculate the interaction energies in the ladder polymer poly(3,6-dioxo-1H-2,3,6,6a-tetrahydro-2,6a,11-triazaindeno[1,2-b]pyrene-2,8,9-triyl-1-ylidene-1-nitrilo) (BBL, 1) and the single-strand polymer poly(5,8-dioxo-4b,5,8,8a-tetrahydro-4b,8a,13,16-tetraazadiindeno[1,2-a:1,2-i]pyrene-3,10-diyl) (BBB, 2), in order to elucidate their chain packing. The van der Waals contribution to the total intermolecular interaction energies was found to be more significant than the Coulombic one. The prediction of short-range interplanar spacings in the neighborhood of 3,3 Å along the z axis (chains above one another) and 8,8 Å along the y axis (chains alongside one another) is in good agreement with X-ray diffraction results.

    Notizen: A novel set of low molecular weight copolymers have been synthesized which were based on the attachment of mesogenic groups to the terminal points of oligomer backbones. The placement of the groups at the end of the chains apparently allowed a second phase to form more easily than if the groups were attached along the backbone as pendant groups. The nature of the coupler or spacer was determined to influence whether the end groups crystallized or formed liquid crystallinity. The observation of liquid crystallinity was found to depend primarily on the relative concentration of mesogen to backbone molecular weight. Depending upon the specific coupler, there existed two critical values of molecular weight between which mesophase behavior was observed. Below a certain value, the end groups were found to crystallize. Above another critical value, there was no measureable second phase. Liquid crystallinity was only observed when the molecular weight was intermediate between the two critical values.

    Notizen: The extended Hückel method within the tight-binding approximation was applied to two benzoxazole polymers of a type much studied because of their excellent mechanical properties. Specifically, band structure calculations were carried out in part to identify the most stable conformation of the polymers in the crystalline state. In the preferred conformation of one polymer the rotational angle between the bibenzoxazole groups is 20°, and that between the bibenzoxazole group and the p-phenylene group is 0°. The other polymer consists simply of benzoxazole groups, and these are predicted to be coplanar. The above conformational predictions are in excellent agreement with the results of both experimental and theoretical studies on relevant model compounds. In addition, the band gaps in the axial direction were found to be 1,86 and 2,31 eV, respectively, and these values are close to the corresponding experimental values 1,4 to 1,8 eV reported for trans-polyacetylene. In both benzoxazole polymers the band gap was found to increase with increase in nonplanarity due to the concomitant reduction in charge delocalization.

    Notizen: A Rheovibron DDV-II-C viscoelastometer was used to carry out loss tangent measurements on purified, swollen elastin networks. The diluents employed were HO(CH2CH2O)mH with m = 0-4, i.e. water, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol (2,2′-oxydiethanol), triethylene glycol (3,6-dioxa-1,8-octanediol) and tetraethylene glycol (3,6,9-trioxa-1,11-undecanediol) and the temperature range was -120 to 40°C. The results, in particular the effects of the various diluents on the α- and β-transitions, are in support of the random-network model rather than the twophase liquid-drop model, for elastin in the rubberlike state.

    Notizen: Chain extension of hydroxyl- or vinyl-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) was carried out with difunctional end-linking agents that are similar in their structure to the higher functionality end linkers used for model network formation. Values of the number-average molecular weight of the polymers before and after chain extension were determined by gel permeation chromatography. In this way, values of the extent of reaction, p, were determined for different stoichiometric ratios, r. They were found to be in the range 0,5-1,0, with the largest values generally corresponding to r closest to unity. Increase in reaction time increases p, but increase in the amount of catalyst did not show any discernible effect. The overall results show that at least under some conditions, the analogous reactions using end linkers of functionality three or higher should produce nearly perfect model networks.

Irradiation of metallized films of microporous polypropylene and polyethylene with a HeNe laser produced marks having high contrast and which could be read without the aid of polarizing optics. The novel marking process involves melting, collapse of the microporous structure, and thinning of the film as the built-in strain relaxes.

    Notizen: Calculation of the effect of light absorbers (UV screeners) on the photochemistry of polymers shows that a critical factor in reducing the rate of photodegradation is the thickness of the actual degraded layer. When the degradation is confined to a zone within a few microns of the exposed surface, the efficiency of light absorption as a stabilization mechanism is greatly reduced. The relative absorptivity of the base resin and pigment loadings are calculated to have a minor effect on stabilization efficiency for polymers having thin layers of degradation.

    Notizen: Conditions for normal phase high performance liquid chromatrography-chemical ionization mass spectrometry of underivatized glycosphingolipids with the use of a moving belt transport interface were investigated. Chromatography was performed on a 2 mm ID × 3 cm column packed with 5 μm spherical silica. A gradient of increasing methanol and water in methylene chloride was used to resolve mono-, di-, tri-, and tetraglycosylceramides and sulfatides in less than 15 min. A polyimide belt was used to transport the sample residues to the mass spectrometer where ammonia chemical ionization mass spectrometry was used to obtain spectra. One to 5 μg of each component was sufficient to obtain full spectral scans. Mono- and dihexosylceramide spectra showed [M + H]+ ions of good abundance, while the higher glycosphingolipids have molecular weights that exceed the range of the mass spectrometer utilized. All glycosphingolipids gave ions characteristic of their ceramide, fatty acid, long chain base and carbohydrate components. Sequence information which reflected the relative position of hexose and N-acetylhexosamine residues was also obtained.
