Notizen: We have calculated the expected absorption of microwave radiation in the gigaHertz frequency range by fixed-length DNA polymer molecules dissolved in saline solution. While the effects of counterions and solvent dynamics have been accounted for in detail, the features of the absorption are completely dominated by the interaction between the charged polymer and the so-called first hydration layer, that is, the nearest layer of solvent water molecules not actually bonded to the polymer. The relevant parameters of the interaction are the strength of the water-to-polymer coupling and the average persistence time of the individual water-to-polymer bonds. These are presumably hydrogen bonds to the oxygen atoms of the backbone phosphate structure. Using a given parameterization we can obtain the structured absorption corresponding to compressional wave phonon excitations on the polymer, “organ pipe” modes, such as have been claimed to be seen by Edwards, Davis, Swicord, and Saffer. While further studies have not confirmed these resonances, at some frequency and hydration these modes must become visible because of the high relaxation time measured by Lindsay, the existence of the resonances in relatively dry fibers and films of DNA, and the existence of underdamped modes in the ir spectrum of DNA in solution. We have examined the effects of varying slat concentration and the system temperature. In both cases the effects are virtually nil, in the former because of the Manning condensation phenomenon that preserves a remarkably constant polymer environment over a wide range of bulk ionic strength, and in the latter case because of a fortuitous competition between effects of bulk viscosity and persistence time changes with temperature. Hence any effects seen in the experimental variation of temperature or salinity could be wholly attributed to their modification of the hydration layer properties.

Notizen: We synthesize a quantitative theory for the radius of gyration, second virial coefficient, intrinsic viscosity, and friction coefficient for polyelectroytes in dilute solution from existing treatments of electrostatic and hydrodynamic interactions within and among wormlike chains. Comparison with data for K-PSS demonstrates the importance of accounting for nonlinearities in the electrostatics and the finite diameter of the polymer backbone.

Notizen: The effect of gamma irradiation on the physicochemical properties of injectable human amninon collagen was investigated. Pepsin-extracted human amnion collagen was purified, reconstituted, and irradiated with varying doses of gamma irradiation (0.25 Mrads to 2.5 Mrads). Gamma irradiation had a significant impact on the physical characteristics of the collagen. The neutral solubility of collagen in PBS at 45°C was decreased from 100% for the nonirradiated control sample to 16% for the 2.5 Mrads irradiated sample. SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis also demonstrated the dose-dependent effect of gamma irradiation on collagen crosslinks. Electron microscopic observation revealed that even at low irradiation dose (0.25 Mrads), collagen fibril diameter increased. The average diameter was 50 nm for nonirradiated control fibrils, while 4.4% percent of the irradiated collagen fibrils had a diameter greater than 100 nm. Irradiated collagen showed little evidence of damage. Well-preserved cross-strations were found in collagen fibrils at all doses of irradiation. Native amnion collagen irradiated with gamma rays demonstrated a slight increase in resistance to collagenase degradation compared with nonirradiated native collagen samples. Increased resistance to collagenase did not correlate with increasing irradiation dose. After 30 min of incubation at 37°C, both irradiated and non-irradiated collagen was completely digested by collagenase. However, gamma-irradiated collagen did become more sensitive to hydrolysis by trypsin. The higher the irradiation doses used, the greater sensitivity to trypsin was observed. At 0.25 Mrads irrdiation only a slight increase was found. No marked differences in amino acid composition were noted among the high dose irradiated, low dose irradiated and control amnion collagen.

Notizen: The methodology of failure analysis and the use of XPS sputter-depth profiles in failure analysis is illustrated in three examples: a titanium adhesive bond, a multilayer optical filter, and an ohmic contact. XPS sputter-depth profiles supplement those obtained using AES and are essential to the failure analysis of a non-conducting sample or one that is easily damaged by an electron beam. XPS sputter-depth profiles also allow chemical state determination and improved quantification, especially for samples in which the Auger signals of different elements overlap.

Beschreibung: From observations of infrared lines, oxygen and nitrogen abundances of the prototype field horizontal-branch stars HD 109995 and HD 161817, the somewhat similar star HD 64488, and the sharp-lined Population I A stars Theta Leo and HR 6559 have been obtained, as well as carbon abundances of HD 161817 and Theta Leo. The results for HD 161817 may be in accord with the predictions of Sweigart and Mengel (1979) for dredge-up during the previous red-giant stage if the non-LTE effects for the O I lines have been properly accounted for, and those for the C I and N I lines are small. This star and HD 109995 are apparently both oxygen and nitrogen poor to the same degree although their iron abundances differ by 0.3 dex.
