Notizen: Abstract We show that, through the diffusive re-arrangement of Si-H bonds, the a-Si∶H lattice is able to establish thermal equilibrium between the densities of band tail trapped charge carriers and dangling bond defects. When this equilibrium is disturbed by changes in temperature, carrier injection or illumination, dangling bond defects have to be generated or annealed out via H-diffusion processes. Based on the concept of charge-induced bond breaking, we develop a mathematical formalism for the diffusive re-arrangement of Si-H bonds and show that our formalism can account for a variety of observations that have been made in the context of defect-generation and annealing experiments.

Notizen: Summary The Drosophila recessive oncogene lethal(2)giant larvae is located at the extreme left end of the second chromosome close to telomeric repetitive sequences. Of the 20 l(2)gl mutant alleles isolated from wild flies in widespread populations of the Soviet Union and California, all but two appear to represent large deletions which have removed the telomeric repetitive sequences and l(2)gl single copy sequences (Mechler et al. 1985). We have analyzed the structure of the two exceptions: the l(2)glGB52 mutation results from the insertion of a single transposable element of the B104 or roo family, whereas the more complex rearrangements of the l(2)glDV275 mutation consists of an 8 kb interstitial deletion whose breakpoints have become associated with a large transposed DNA fragment. Characterization of this fragment shows that it consists of B104 sequences flanked on one side by sequences originating from the chromosomal region 24D. Furthermore, we show that in both mutants normal transcription of the l(2)gl gene is abolished.

Notizen: Abstract This work reports calculations and measurements on mode converters for the transformation of TEOn gyrotron mode mixtures (primarily TEO2) into the linearly polarized HE11 hybrid mode at 70 GHz. This mode is ideal for quasi-optical launching systems for ECRH of plasmas. Mode transducers with axisymmetric radius perturbations convert the gyrotron TEOn mode composition into the TEO1 mode. Proper matching of the phase differences between the various modes and of the perturbation amplitudes of the several converter sections is required. The TEO1 wave is used for long-distance transmission through smooth-walled overmoded waveguides. A mode converter with constant diameter and periodically perturbed curvature transfers the unpolarized TEO1 mode into the polarized TE11 wave. The experimentally determined ΣTEOn-to-TEO1 conversion efficiency is (98.5±1)% (99% predicted) while the TEO1-to-TE11 transformer has a (94±2)% efficiency (93% theoretically); ohmic losses are included. The “Gaussian-like” HE11 mode with axisymmetric power distribution and almost no cross polarization is produced in a circumferentially corrugated TE11-to-HE11 mode transducer with a measured conversion efficiency of (98.3±1.5)% (98.5% predicted). The overall efficiency of the complete mode converter system in the desired mode was determined to be (91±2.5)%. High-power operation (200kW, 100ms) has been successfully demonstrated.

Notizen: Kinetics of Photoinduced Radical Polymerization with Electron Donor/Electron Acceptor Initiator SystemsBy means of benzyltriphenylphosphonium tetrafluoroborate (P⊕) and anthracene (An) as photoinitiator system and methylmethacrylate (MMA) as monomer the influences of several reaction parameters on the polymerization quantum yield Φp, were studied. The following principal reactions proceed: electron transfer between excited An (1An) and P⊕ salt (kq = 2,5 · 109 M-1 s-1), quenching of 1An by MMA (kqMMA = 1,3 · 107 M-1 s-1), reaction between a 1An…P⊕ salt complex and MMA. The last reaction is assumed, since from the disappearance of An and the formation of An cation radical, respectively, rate constants kqMMA 〉 108 M-1 s-1 have been calculated. Furthermore, it is assumed, that only the quenching of 1An by MMA (Φp = 3,8) and the addition of free radicals, produced by the photoinduced electron transfer, lead to polymer formation. Kinetic equations were developed, which can explain the effect of P⊕-salt concentration, light intensity and MMA concentration on Φp data. The quotient obtained for kp/kt0,5 is in the range of 0,053 to 0,087 M-0,5 s-0,5, depending on the used experimental parameters. Polymerization degrees Pn of 260-590 were found, which also depend on the experimental parameters.
