Notes: Post treatment of effluents from heterotrophic groundwater denitrification fluidized bed reactors (FBR) designed to achieve drinking water quality has been investigated. The denitrification process adds to the dissolved organic compounds, biomass and bacteria in the effluent. They are also lacking dissolved oxygen. Effluents from the process were treated in combined post treatment processes based on either a trickling filter and sedimentation unit (‘TF combination’) or contact flocculation (‘CF combination’). Both processes were followed by sand filtration, granular activated carbon (GAC) and chlorination. Results regarding total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity removal showed an advantage to the ‘CF combination’, and the target turbidity (NTU 〈1) was always achieved when the alum dose was 10 or 20 mg l−1. Backwash of the sand filter and GAC column was required after 27 h of operation (average value). An average total reduction in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) of 40% was observed with a final DOC of 3.5–4 mg L−1. Most of the removal of the DOC occurred in the sand filter (28%), while the GAC contribution was smaller (18%). No regrowth potential was observed using the Werner method when a pure culture of Pseudomonas fluorescens P17 was used as inoculum in samples of chlorinated effluent (post chlorination). When a mixed culture of indigenous bacteria was used as inoculum, a high regrowth potential was observed. Installing an additional chlorination unit before the sand filter column (pre and post chlorination) resulted in effluent with no regrowth potential for both Pseudomonas fluorescens P17 and indigenous bacteria.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Oxydation der langkettigen Fettsäuren ist carnitinabhängig.
Notes: Summary The oxidation of long-chain fatty acids is carnitine-dependent. Indeed, only when they are bound to carnitine, in the form of acyl-carnitines, do fatty acids penetrate into the mitochondria to be oxidized. To meet the need for carnitine, animals depend on both endogenous synthesis and an exogenous supply. A diet rich in meat supplies a lot of carnitine, while vegetables, fruits, and grains furnish relatively little. Although it has a low molecular weight and acts at low doses in a vital metabolic pathway, carnitine should not be considered a vitamin, but rather a nutritive substance. Indeed, it seems that the diet of the adult human need not necessarily furnish carnitine: the healthy organism, given a balanced nutrition (sufficiently rich in lysine and methionine), may well be able to meet all its needs. Furthermore, it seems that a reduction of the exogenous supply of carnitine results in a lowering of its elimination in the urine. However, dietary carnitine is more important during the neonatal period. The transition from fetal to extrauterine life is accompanied by an increased role of lipids in meeting energy needs. This change is accompanied by a rise in the body of the levels of carnitine, which is mainly supplied in the maternal milk. Finally, this review briefly surveys the illnesses in which a dietary carnitine supplement proves useful.

Notes: Abstract Mated queens of the antLinepithema humile (Iridomyrmex humilis Mayr) introduced into dequeened colony fragments rearing sexual brood elicited worker aggression resulting in queen larvae being bitten and eliminated. By contrast, male larvae were spared. Regarding queen brood, killing mainly concerned small and medium sized larvae. A large proportion of the large larvae escaped extermination, and prepupae and pupae were spared. These data suggest that workers were able to discriminate sex, caste and age of the brood. That a queen pheromone may be involved was shown by experiments using whole or cut corpses that were either rinsed or not rinsed in pentane. The pheromone eliciting worker aggressive behaviour was shown to act over a short distance, suggesting that it is somewhat volatile. Similarities and differences between this new queen pheromone and other known queen pheromones acting on queen production or worker attraction are discussed as well as the origin of the signals underlying the recognition of the larval classes.

Notes: Abstract A method based on the parabolic wave equation is used to predict path loss in a two dimensional urban setting where buildings sprawl over irregular terrain. Propagation is assumed to take place in the vertical plane joining the transmitting and receiving antennas. A coordinate transformation is used to account for the irregular terrain features. The vertical walls of the buildings are assumed to be absorbing while the rooftops are taken to be flat and reflective. Ground and rooftops are allowed to have different constitutive parameters. Both horizontal and vertical polarizations are considered. Comparison is shown with various other methodologies to demonstrate the ability and accuracy of the present method to accommodate various situations.

Notes: Abstract Five essential oils and nine of their components were compared to diethyl toluamide (DEET) for their repellent activity against the human body louse, Pediculus humanus humanus. The absolute or intrinsic repellency of the compounds was tested by applying the repellent to corduroy patches and comparing them with untreated patches. It was found that the most effective repellents were DEET and citronella, whose activity lasted at least 29 days. The activity of rosemary lasted at least 18 days and that of eucalyptus more than 8 days. The repellent activity of the oil components such as citronellal and geraniol lasted more than 15 and 8 days, respectively. DEET remained effective at a dilution of 1:32, geraniol at 1:8, citronella at 1:4 and rosemary and citronellal at 1:1. The comparative or standard repellency of the candidate repellents was examined with the aid of a new screening technique using hairs treated with ammonium bicarbonate which is attractive to lice. Using this technique it could be shown that the repellent activity of citronella and geraniol lasted 2 days and that of rosemary and citronellal for only one day. DEET was active for less than one day. Serial dilutions of these substances also revealed that citronella was the most potent repellent for lice, followed by citronellal, rosemary, geraniol and DEET. The differences however, were not significant.

Notes: Abstract We present an ISO LWS 43-197 µm grating spectrum of the oxygen-rich AGB star R Cas. The spectrum is rich of isolated and blended H2O lines. For their identification and in order to determine the physical parameters of the circumstellar envelope, we have constructed a model which treats radiative transfer, chemical exchange and photodissociation reactions, and various heating and cooling processes in a consistent manner. By fitting the observed line fluxes and using stellar parameters based upon the Hipparcos distance, we derived a mass-loss rate of M = 1 10-6 M⊙ yr-1 which is close to the value 6 10-7 M⊙ yr-1 previously derived for W Hya, another oxygen-rich AGB star.

Notes: Abstract Faraday rotation up to 20 kGauß was measured on amorphous selenium in the spectral range between 690 and 930 mμ. From these measurements an effective mass was calculated to (8±l,5)m 0. It is shown that the dispersion in amorphous selenium is caused by bounded carriers.
