Notes: Abstract Litetimes of six individual rotational levels in theν=0 vibrational level of the3 π g state of C2 were measured by monitoring the fluorescent decay after pulsed laser excitation. A value of 92±5 ns was obtained, 25% lower than previous measurements. The corresponding oscillator strength for the Swan (0-0) band isf 00=0.032±0.002, in agreement with recent theoretical work.

Notes: Abstract Predation by third instar larvae of Chrysoperla (=Chrysopa) carnea (Stephens) (Chrysopidae) did not alter the ratio of unparasitized Heliothis virescens (F.) (Noctuidae) larvae to H. virescens larvae parasitized by Microplitis croceipes (Cresson) (Braconidae) when these second instar larvae were exposed together to the predator on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L., Malvaceae) in field cages. This indicates that C. carnea larvae did not prefer either parasitized or unparasitized larvae.

Notes: Abstract Capacitance-voltage (CV) profiling measurements on delta-doped n-type GaAs reveal extremely narrow peaks with a full-width at half-maximum of 40 Å. Comparison of experimental with self-consistently calculated CV profiles demonstrates that Si impurities are localized on a length scale of a lattice constant in delta-doped GaAs. Diffusion and segregation are of minor importance. The basic theory of CV measurements on quantummechanical systems such as delta-doped semiconductors is developed and presented.

Notes: Summary AKR lymphoma cells derived from primary s.c. tumors (PT) and cells from their metastases (MT) were inoculated into recipient mice in order to compare their malignant behavior. A higher malignant potential of MT compared to PT cells was found. The results support the hypothesis that metastasis is a process of selection of cells possessing a potential to metastasize, which preexist in the primary tumor. In the model used, both the selection of ‘variants’ of malignancy and the assay of malignancy were as close as possible to natural tumor progression.

Notes: Summary The effect of norepinephrine on fatty acid synthesis (3H2O incorporation into fatty acids), on fatty acid oxidation to CO2 and on ketogenesis was studied in isolated hepatocytes of fed rats. After incubation with norepinephrine (50 μM), lipogenesis was lower (5.7±1.1 nmoles3H2O incorporated into fatty acids/mg dry weight/30 min) than in controls (7.5±1.7; n=6, p〈0.02). In contrast, (1-14C) palmitate conversion into total ketone bodies was increased to 10.9±1.8 nmoles/mg/30 min with norepinephrine, vs 8.5±1.6 in controls (p〈0.05), and more (1-14C) palmitate was converted to14CO2 with norepinephrine than in controls (1.48±0.10 nmoles/mg/30 min vs 1.06±0.11, p〈0.05). The inhibitory effect of norepinephrine on lipogenesis was abolished by addition of the α1-receptor blocker prazosin, but not by α2 or β-blockers. The results demonstrate that the ketogenic effect of norepinephrine is coupled with an inhibitory effect on lipogenesis which may be explained by diminished activity of acetyl-CoA carboxylase, diminished formation of malonyl-CoA and decreased activity of carnitine palmitoyl transferase I.

Notes: Abstract We present a necessary and sufficient condition for the non-existence of rotational invariant circles for area-preserving twist maps of the cyclinder or annulus based on the “cone-crossing” and “killends” criteria of MacKay and Percival (1985). Given a number of technical restrictions on the implementation of these criteria, this condition leads to a proof of MacKay and Percival's Finite Computation Conjecture.

Notes: Abstract The adsorption of the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) as well as of other dipolar molecules to the interface of artificial lipid membranes gives rise to a change of the dipole potential between the membrane interior and water. As a consequence of the adsorption of the neutral species, the conductance of planar membranes, observed in the presence of the macrocyclic ion carriers nonactin or valinomycin, may change by many orders of magnitude. Using this effect in combination with a laser-T-jump technique, the kinetics of the adsorption process were measured and were interpreted on the basis of a Langmuir-isotherm. A partition coefficient (at small concentrations) of β HA =4.7·10−4 cm, a rate constant of desorption k HA≧100 s-1 and a maximum surface density N D=7.7·1013/cm2 were found. The concentration at half saturation is K HA=2.7·10-4 M. Using these values the membrane conductance induced by the ion carrier nonactin and the shape of the current-voltage relationship as a function of the ligand concentration in water was analyzed. A maxiumum dipole potential of V D max =-239 m V and a contribution of b=3.1·10-15V cm2 per single adsorbed 2,4-D molecule was found. 74% of the dipole potential acts on the inner membrane barrier separating the two interfacial adsorption planes of nonactin. The remainder (26%) favours interfacial complex formation between nonactin and K+ from the aqueous phase. The data hold for membranes formed from dioleoyllecithin in n-decane.

Notes: Abstract Phloretin and structurally related neutral molecules adsorb to the interface of lipid membranes and modify the electric dipole potential of the membrane/water interface. The adsorption process has been studied using a laser-T-jump relaxation technique in combination with an analysis of nonactin mediated potassium transport (see part I, Awiszus and Stark 1988). Deviations from the Langmuir isotherm were observed for most of the substance. The discrepancies were most pronounced at large surface densities, whereas good agreement was found at low concentrations in many cases. The partition coefficient in the limit of low concentrations was compared with that of octanol/water bulk phases. No correlation was found. The individual values of the two partition coefficients differed by more than three orders of magnitude. The contribution, b, of a single adsorbed molecule to the dipole potential could not be predicted from the dipole moment, μ L , of the molecule measured in the bulk phase. Different values of b were found at identical values of μ L . The study shows the limitations of the use of bulk phase data to predict molecular properties in lipid membranes.

Notes: Abstract Three structurally different types of models have evolved over the years to describe muscle-joint systems. The first, based on an input-output analysis of a given task, results in a simple second-order differential equation description that is adequate over a certain movement operating range. The second, based on the classic structural model of Hill (1938), results in a higher-order nonlinear model described by ordinary differntial equations. The third, based on an analysis of the biophysical contractile mechanism, results in a complex partial differential equation description. The advantages and disadvantages of each type of model are considered, based on the criteria of identifying the simplest model that can adequately simulate any fundamental type of human movement without modifying model parameters for different tasks. It is shown that an eighth-order Hill-based antagonistic muscle-joint model is able to satisfy these criteria for a given joint if each of the four basic mechanically-significant non-linearities of the system are included in the model. This same model structure has been used successfully for eight different muscle-joint systems, ranging in size from knee flexion-extension to eye rotation — the only difference between the models is in the parameter values. Second-order models are shown to be task-specific special cases of the input-output behavior of the eighth-order model, while the more complex biophysical models are hypothesized to have insignificant advantages and many disadvantages over the Hill-based model during normal human movement.
