    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In dieser Zeitschrift sind zwei Algorithmen zur Berechnung von Ableitungen einerB-Spline-Reihe erschienen (Lee [6] und Boehm [1]), die weniger Aufwand benötigen als die wiederholte Anwendung des Algorithmus von de Boor auf die abgeleitete Reihe. Wir berichten hier über Testrechnungen, die zeigen, daß diese Algorithmen weniger stabil sind als die wiederholte Anwendung des de Boor-Algorithmus.
    Notes: Abstract Two algorithms appeared (Lee [6] and Boehm [1]), both in this journal, for the computation of derivatives of aB-spline series that are faster than the repeated application of de Boor's algorithm to the derived series. Here we report on some test examples which show, however, that both these are less stable than the repeated de Boor.

    Notes: Abstract The microorganism model of interstellar grains is investigated by spectroscopy from the infrared (IR), visible to the ultraviolet (UV) wave regions.E. coli, yeast and spores ofBacillus subtilis exhibit absorption bands at λ=3.1 and 9.7 μm; they also exhibit several absorptions at 6∼8 μm which are in agreement with the observed IS extinction curves. To obtain the extinction curves in the visible and UV regions, dry films of microorganism are prepared on a MgF2 plate or synthesized quartz plate and their spectra measured. In the wavelength region 190∼400 nm, conventional spectrophotometers are adopted for the measurement. The extinction curve of the film ofE. coli is similar to the observed IS curve. For the wave-range 100〈λ〈400 nm, a vacuum UV spectrometer is adopted to avoid absorptions due to O2 in the atmosphere. The extinction spectra by this method are in agreement with the result obtained by the conventional method where comparison is possible. The extinction curves ofE. coli and yeast are such that they incrase towards the short wavelength and exhibit a peak at λ-190 nm, which is different from the well-known IS peak at λ=220 nm. It remains to be seen whether interstellar low temperatures (10∼40 K) can shift the peak position in the extinction curve of biochemical materials.

    Notes: Abstract Noncommutative differential geometric structures are considered for a class of simple C*-algebras. This structure is defined in terms of smooth Lie group actions on the C*-algebra in question together with a certain quantization mapping motivated directly by the known cohomological obstructions for the quantum mechanical quantization correspondence. We show that such a quantization mapping may be constructed for the C*-algebras associated to antisymmetric bi-characters and for the Cuntz/Cuntz-Krieger C*-algebras associated to topological dynamics. A certain curvature obstruction is defined in terms of the quantization mapping. It is shown that existence of smooth Lie group actions is determined by the curvature obstruction.

    Notes: Summary Seasonal measurements of microclimatic conditions were compared to seasonal indices of leaf structural components and plant water relations in Prosopis glandulosa var. torryana. P. glandulosa had two short periods of leaf production which resulted in two distinct even aged cohorts of leaves. The two leaf cohorts (summer, winter) were concurrent in the summer and fall, contrasting to previous studies on other species in which one leaf form replaces a previous leaf type. The structural characteristics of these two cohorts differed significantly in two replicate year cycles. The leaves of the spring cohort were larger in weight and area but similar to the summer cohort in specific leaf weight and leaflet number. The second growth period leaves constituted only a small proportion of the total plant leaf area. The dimorphism between the two cohorts was best associated with plant water relations and not energy load. Second growth period leaves maintained turgor to greater water deficits but lost turgor at higher leaf water potentials. Seasonal osmotic adjustment occurred for first growth period leaves but not second growth period leaves. The small leaves produced during the hot climate were most likely the result of low turgor potential during development rather than an adaptation to tolerate stressful environments.

    Notes: Summary Several experimental approaches have been taken to demonstrate the importance of soil fauna in nitrogen mineralization, but there have been difficulties interpreting the results. We have supplemented the experimental approach with theoretical calculations of nitrogen transformations in a shortgrass prairie. The calculations incorporate a wide array of information on decomposer organisms, including their feeding preferences, nitrogen contents, life spans, assimilation efficiencies, productio:assimilation ratios, decomposabilities, and population sizes. The results are estimates of nitrogen transfer rates through the detrital food web, including rates of N mineralization by bacteria, fungi, root-feeding nematodes, collembolans, fungal-feeding mites, fungal-feeding nematodes, flagellates, bacterial-feeding nematodes, amoebae, omnivorous nematodes, predaceous nematodes, nematode-feeding mites, and predaceous mites. Bacteria are estimated to mineralize the most N (4.5 g N m−2 year−1), followed by the fauna (2.9), and fungi (0.3). Bacterial-feeding amoebae and nematodes together account for over 83% of N mineralization by the fauna. The detrital food web in a shortgrass prairie is similar to that of a desert grassland. The shortgrass detrital web seems to be divided into bacteria- and fungus-based components, although these two branches are united at the level of predaceous nematodes and mites.
