    Notes: Abstract Starlike poly (oxypropylene) molecules (M=2630 resp. 710 g/mol), each with three OH-end-groups, are crosslinked with 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate in one stoichiometric and several nonstoichiometric reactions. Dynamic mechanical (frequency 10−4 to 102 Hz) and also some dielectric (10−2 to 106 Hz) measurements were made on these networks in a wide temperature range. The time-temperature-superposition principle was used to obtain master curves. Two large relaxation processes were detected (separated by many decades of frequency in some samples). The high frequency process seems to correspond to the glass-rubber transition in linear polymers, the low frequency process is probably due to the relaxation of “dangling chains”.

    Notes: Abstract Free convective mass transfer rates at vertical electrodes of expanded metal were measured by the electrochemical method. Electrode height and electrolyte concentration were varied and the dependence of the expanded metal on the geometry and on the mesh orientation with respect to the vertical direction was investigated. A single equation was developed to correlate all the results. Besides the generalized dimensionless groups for natural convection the correlation includes a parameter characterizing the geometry of the expanded metal. The correlation also represents free convective mass transfer results obtained by other investigators with vertical mesh electrodes.

    Notes: Abstract Mass transfer to wall electrodes was investigated in a circular cell agitated by gas bubbles. Perforated and porous plates were used as gas spargers. Electrodes with varying height and electrolytic solutions having different physical properties were tested. It was found that the enhancing effect of gas bubbles on the mass transfer coefficient is a function of the gas hold-up, irrespective of the velocity of the gas flow and the gas distributor employed. The results were correlated for short mass transfer lengths by the relationship $$Sh = 0.231(ScGa)^{\frac{1}{3}} (L/D_c )^{--0.194 _\varepsilon 0.246}$$ and for fully developed mass transfer by $$Sh_\infty = 0.256(ScGa)^{\frac{1}{3}} \varepsilon ^{0.254}$$

    Notes: Abstract Mass transfer rates at planar electrodes and electrodes of expanded metal placed in the centre of a bubble column were measured. The gas velocity and the physical properties of the electrolytic solutions were varied and different types of expanded metal were investigated. In some cases increases in the mass transfer coefficient over the planar electrode value of more than 100% were obtained. Dimensionless correlations are presented for the different systems.

    Notes: Abstract Experimental studies of mass transfer were conducted in stacked screens with a gas-liquid mixture flowing through the bed. Depending on the gas and liquid flow rates and on the geometric characteristics of the screens, different flow regimes are obtained. In the heterogeneous flow regime the gas phase controls mass transfer, meanwhile in the transition and bubbling flow regimes the influence of the liquid flow prevails. Appropriate dimensionless groups correlate the mass transfer coefficients with the pertinent variables for the different regimes.

    Notes: Abstract We analyze the strength of electronic correlations in the half-filled antibonding Cu−O orbitals of high-T c superconducting copper oxides by considering a Cu12O 17 n− cluster withn=8 or 10, respectively. The correlated ground state is calculated by the method of the local approach (LA) in a version which allows the treatment of stronger correlated electrons. As mean-field basis a semiempirical Hamiltonian of the ZDO (zero differential overlap) type has been adopted. It is found that the correlations are particularly strong in the Cu 3d x 2−y2 orbitals. The nonintegral orbital occupation allows for valence fluctuations between Cu+ and Cu2+ in spite of the remarkable correlations. According to the present model excess holes are located at the oxygen sites. The theoretical findings are compared with the results of spectroscopic investigations. The present electronic-structure analysis allows for a straighforward rationalization of previous experimental measurements. The strong connection between the importance of electronic correlations and the symmetry properties of the electronic wave function is emphasized.

    Notes: Abstract TheW andQ 2 dependence of the fragmentation functions and of the average multiplicity of charged pions is investigated, using data from the NA9 experiment at the CERN SPS on muon-proton scattering at 280 GeV. A significant increase of pion production with increasingW is observed at fixedQ 2, leading to a rise of the average charged pion multiplicity, linear in lnW 2, and of the pion fragmentation function in the central region, i.e. at small |x F |. This increase can be understood from the kinematic widening of the cms rapidity range proportional to lnW 2 and the observedW independent height of the rapidity distribution. At fixedW, a rise of the average charged pion multiplicity withQ 2 is observed. This rise appears to be weaker than that observed for all charged hadrons implying a stronger rise withQ 2 for kaons and protons.

    Notes: Abstract The energy distribution of inclusive hadrons produced by 280 GeV muons on hydrogen and deuterium targets are compared. The sum of the scaled energy distributions of the positive and negative hadrons is found to be the same for the two targets. The difference of these distributions is observed to factorise inx andz and thez-dependence is found to be independent of the target type and have a form (1−z)2.1±0.2. The net charge of the hadronic jet is positive at highx even in the case when the scattering takes place on the neutron. These results are in good agreement with the expectations of the Quark Parton Model.
