    Description: The four noise parameters of cryogenically cooled HEMTs have been investigated. Two different HEMT structures, with and without a spacer layer, were tested. The noise parameters of both structures were similar at room temperature, while they were dramatically different at cryogenic temperatures. The minimum noise temperatures measured at 8.4 GHz were 75 + or 5 K at room temperature and 8.5 + or - 1.5 K at the temperature of 12.5 K. The cryogenic performance is the best ever observed for field-effect transistors.

    Description: Observations and numerical simulations of the evolution of upswelling and the resultant coastal circulation in response to two wind events occurring along the Galician coast of Spain during the April 18-26, 1982 period are presented. In situ measurements include shipboard determinations of hydrographic and biological parameters, and wind stress estimates obtained from the ship winds and from surface pressure charts. Sea surface temperature information was derived from NOAA 7 satellite images, and pigment concentration information was acquired from the Nimbus 7 coastal zone color scanner. The indication from the simulations that the greatest upswelling will occur either at Cape Finisterre or along the northern coast was confirmed by observations, and it is suggested that wave disturbances propagate northward along the coast at a speed of 120-160 km/day, and that organic material formed north of Cape Finisterre is advected out to sea northwest of the cape.

    Description: Global water redistriburtion between the oceans, atmosphere and continents causes changes in the earth's rotation and gravitational field. To conserve water mass, the effect of the small uniform change in sea-level must be considered. Explicit formulas are provided for these sea-level corrections to the gravitational Stokes coefficients, polar motion and length of day. In two recent publications, this sea-level correction term for polar motion was given incorrectly. These errors which arose from normalization conventions with the ocean function are corrected.

    Description: A global, monthly snow depth data set has been generated from the Nimbus 7 satellite observations using passive microwave remote-sensing techniques. Seven years of data, 1979-1985, are analyzed to compute the snow load effects on the earth's rotation and low-degree zonal gravitational field. The resultant time series show dominant seasonal cycles. The annual peak-to-peak variation in J2 is found to be 2.3 x 10 to the -10th, that in J3 to be 1.1 x 10 to the -10th, and believed to decrease rapidly for higher degrees. The corresponding change in the length of day is 41 micro-s. The annual wobble excitation is (4.9 marc sec, -109 deg) for the prograde motion component and (4.8 marc sec, -28 deg) for the retrograde motion component. The excitation power of the Chandler wobble due to the snow load is estimated to be about 25 dB less than the power needed to maintain the observed Chandler wobble.

    Description: A real-time broadband pseudocolor image enhancement technique using a liquid crystal television spatial light modulator (LCTV SLM) is described. Three different schemes to modulate the gray-scale disribution of an input scene by an LCTV SLM through varying the orientations of its analyzer are presented. These schemes are incorporated into a compact white light optical projection system that is able to display, on a large screen, broadband pseudocolor images of real-world input scenes. Experimental results demonstrating the feasibility of the technique are reported.

    Description: The spherical harmonic equation for the gravitational potential inside the earth is presented. The equation satisfies Poisson's equation and converges uniformly. It obviates the need for downward continuation of the exterior potential with its attendant convergence difficulties but of course requires some knowledge of the earth's density distribution. The equation is used to derive the general expression for the geophysical measurement of the gravitational constant G made inside the earth, such as in boreholes and mine shafts. Numerical evidence is also presented to show that the long- to intermediate-wavelength gravity anomalies can masquerade as the 'fifth force' if not properly corrected for.

    Description: The photoabsorption and fluorescence cross sections of C2H2 were measured in the 50-106 nm region using synchrotron radiation as a light source. Fluorescence observed at several excitation wavelengths was dispersed to identify the fluorescing species that are excited C2H, C2, CH, H, and possibly C2H2. The photodissociation process of C2H2 leading to the formation of fluorescing species is discussed. The C2 (C-A) emission observed at 92.3 and 95.5 nm is produced by the molecular elimination process associated with superexcited state(s). Fluorescence spectra from the two-photon excitation of C2H2 at 157.5 and 193 nm were also observed and compared with those of single-photon excitation at the equivalent excitation energies.

    Description: A coherent optical correlation technique for real-time simultaneous tracking of several different objects making independent movements is described, and experimental results are presented. An evaluation of this system compared with digital computing systems is made. The real-time processing capability is obtained through the use of a liquid crystal television spatial light modulator and a dichromated gelatin multifocus hololens. A coded reference beam is utilized in the separation of the output correlation plane associated with each input target so that independent tracking can be achieved.
