    Notes: An examination of the variational formulations confirms the similarity between the incompatible displacement model and the assumed stress hybrid model that was pointed out by Irons in 1972. But the basic differences between the two are also identified.     Notes: The two matrix equations obtained from the mixed finite element method are uncoupled through the use of the QR decomposition. The procedure obtains the basis for the null space which is composed of solutions to the homogeneous flux-equilibrium equation. The result is that, even for statically indeterminate problems, stresses can be obtained without solving for the displacement field. Furthermore, the stress field can be decomposed directly into contributions from applied forces and from prescribed displacements. The appearance of kinetic modes can easily be monitored. The possibility of utilizing non-conventional basis functions for use in conjunction with the QR decomposition is explored briefly. Simple examples are given to illustrate the theoretical results.

    Notes: A new approach for choosing the stress terms for a hybrid stress element is based on the condition of vanishing of the virtual work along the element boundary due to the stress terms higher than constant and the additional incompatible displacement. Examples using 4-node plane stress elements have shown that when the incompatible displacements also satisfy the constant strain patch test the resulting elements will provide the most accurate solutions. Advantages of this approach for the formulation of an axisymmetric solid are also indicated.

    Notes: Triaxial fracture tests with overburden pressures ranging from 0.69 to 136 MPa were performed to determine the material parameters involved in a cap model for limestone. Three material parameters A, B and C, were evaluated through Powell's optimization method and the remaining parameters through simulation-curve fitting procedure. The resulting cap model was tested against separate triaxial fracture and hydrostatic compression tests. Modification of the original hardening function, as proposed by DiMaggio and Sandler, provided an improved fit for the experimental data.

    Notes: A finite element method is developed to solve the partial differential equations describing the unsteady flow of gas in pipelines. Excellent agreement is obtained between simulated results and experimental data from a fullscale gas pipeline.     Notes: Because of the cost of generating computer solutions for a dynamic analysis, it is often desirable to reduce the size of the problem by performing a reduction on the mass and stiffness matrices of the governing set of equations of motion. The well-known reduction proposed by Guyan is the technique used by most of the large structure codes. This paper is concerned with the accuracy in such reduction and the method to improve it. A formula for the estimate of the error induced by Guyan reduction is derived through from perturbation theory. Based on the same principle, an iterative pertubation scheme is developed to improve the solution accuracy by taking the Guyan solution as the starting value. To demonstrate the practical usefulness of the method, two numerical examples are included.

    Notes: The use of a standard quadratic element in the analysis of consolidation following external loading is explored. It is shown that such an element can produce satisfactory results for both instantaneous and ramp loading one-dimensional problems. A double calculation procedure is proposed for the establishment of initial conditions under instantaneous loading. Simple refinement of the mesh, in the region of the free draining boundary, is shown to eliminate problems associated with ramp loading.
