    Notes: SUMMARY. 〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1Use of a multi-column thin-layer pneumatic sampler and modified analytic procedures has enabled resolutions of chemical and biological strata at 2.5 or 5.0 cm depth intervals. Examination of meromictic Lake Fidler, Tasmania, indicates the presence of a thin, intense stratum of bacteriochlorohyll d in the upper monimolimnion, associated with a discrete stratum of Chlorobium cf. limicola at the microaerobic interface between the oxygenated and sulphide-rich zones.2Algae included small populations of Chlorophyceae, Chrysophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and Cryptophyceae. Bacteria included microaerophils and obligate anaerobes, pigmented and colourless, in well-defined strata in the upper monimolimnion. A population of the microcrustacean Calamoecia tasmanica tasmanica was present in the mixolimnion. Chaoborus larvae were concentrated within the Chlorobium layer.3The chemical profile of Lake Fidler was stable, with a chemocline constant in position relative to the lake bottom. The surface water levels rose and fell through a distance of 1m in conjunction with heavy rainfall in the rainforest, and with river level variation, but had no measurable effect on the absolute position of the chemocline. Marked heterogeneity of dissolved substances at depths in the vicinity of bacteria suggested endogenous influence on pH and gelbstoff (‘gilvin’ in Australia).4Downwelling light attenuation was influenced primarily by gelbstoff (‘gilvin’) in the mixolimnion, with only red light (peak at 700 nm) measurable below 2 m. Light was absorbed mainly by Chlorobium in the monimolimnion, and was unmeasurable deeper than 3 m.5The absorption spectrum of the bacteriochlorophyll d in vivo, with a maximum absorbance at 721 nm, corresponds with the available downwelling light penetrating the mixolimnion to the Chlorobium layer.

    Notes: Survey data collected during a grassland-recording investigation showed a strong positive correlation between nitrogen input and the output of utilized starch equivalent per acre. At the levels of output covered, sward type was not very important in relation to total yield. Herbage species were important for other reasons and the choice of seeds mixtures should be determined by factors such as earliness and lateness of growth and resistance to disease and drought. The survey showed that well-managed ley and permanent pasture are both capable of producing at a high level. A disturbing feature of the results was the low production of most spring resowings, primarily as a result of poor management. Although the records were obtained from an above-average group of farms, the results have general application. Potential responses to fertilizers may be even greater on less intensive farms, especially with regard to phosphate and potash. However, the level of production of a field will always depend finally on the level of management exercised by the farmer himself.

    Notes: Summary The loud and elaborate songs of male songbirds are throught to serve in territorial defense and to stimulate reproductive behavior in the female. We report here that in contrast to several other species, song alone is inadequate to induce sexual (lordosis) behavior in female indigo and lazuli buntings (Passerina cyanea and P. amoena); they require a more elaborate stimulus configuration to develop the full expression of sexual receptivity as indicated by a stereotyped copulation solicitation display. A live male must be present near the female, singing must ensue, and in addition a second and unique vocal utterance must be heard by the female; this is a soft buzzy-sounding vocalization, audible for no more than a few meters, not recognized previously as a critical arousal signal of the male songbird repertoire. Females also utter similar soft sounds in an intimate vocal exchange with the male leading to solicitation of copulation.

    Notes: Abstract A series of inexpensive, pneumatic thin layer water samplers is described. They can be operated from small boats, and permit sampling at 2.5 cm intervals with little or no disturbance of stratified systems such as oxyclines or redoxclines of meromictic lakes, or microstratification of flagellates in sheltered epilimnia. Some models permit replicate sampling at closely-spaced intervals in a two-dimensional array. Their performance abilities are illustrated with examples of microstratification.

    Notes: Abstract Approximately 1 500 angiosperm species, in previous papers, have been sampled for the assessment of the amino acids (a. a.) in their nectar. We reaffirm that the findings provide statistically significant data linking differences in the concentration with pollinator type. Flowers that are pollinated by animals that have alternative sources of protein-building a. a.’s show lower a. a. concentration than those that are not. There is a tendency for woody plant nectar a. a.’s to be less concentrated than those of herbaceous plants, but there can be “phylogenetic constraints” which may reduce the correlations of a. a. concentration with pollinator type and with life form. The individual a. a.’s form complements which are qualitatively extremely constant within species. Proline is a normal constituent of many nectars and does not necessarily indicate contamination of the nectar by pollen. Criticism of our findings byGottsberger & al. (1984) is answered by reference to our previous publications and those of other workers, and to the presentation of data from California native species, not published previously. All previous postulates are borne out by these new data with the exception of positive correlations of a. a. concentration with “primitive” and “advanced” floral characteristics taken one at a time, which appear to be inconsistent and are affected strongly by the nature of the family in which they occur. Summary data are provided for families and genera which indicate that high or low a. a. concentration can typify certain families and genera of both relatively “primitive” and relatively “advanced” nature. Needs for future research on an ecosystem basis are quoted.

    Notes: Abstract Intraspecific variation has been found for several pollination-related characteristics in two isolated populations of the self-incompatible treeAcacia terminalis: floral characteristics including colour and flowering time; style length; size and colour of extrafloral nectaries on the leaf petioles; chemical components of the extrafloral nectar; different taxa of bee pollinators; and frequency differences in bird pollinators. These differences possibly reflect the evolution of two different pollination syndromes within this species.

    Notes: The author distinguishes information from knowledge: information is notes, details, evidence, etc., knowledge is general laws, theories, understanding. Information Engineering (IE) is the provision of knowledge in usable form. Artificial Intelligence (Al) is the construction of computer systems that exhibit signs of intelligence. He asserts that Al has already provided methodologies that have advanced both IE and KE. The result is that IE and KE are now in the position to act as the pencil, paper and report material for R&D.Working knowledge of the languages is easily acquired and some useful empty shells are available, though the latter need more variety. Existing systems tend to be crude and may not address the right issues, e.g. emphasising probability rather than the risks associated with actions. Nevertheless the available tools are good enough to build useful expert systems for R&D.The potential of KE in education is being missed. In the author's opinion all university students should be taught to use the basic tools of knowledge engineering and apply them to their own disciplines.

    Notes: We point out that the creation of a soliton pulse train in a nonlinear-dispersive system can be used for the generation of high-power microwave bursts. A modulated transmission line with an appropriate nonlinear dielectric is proposed. The nonlinear wave evolution is analyzed and requirements for the dielectric material are found. Problems associated with the material are discussed. Low-power experimental demonstrations of these concepts are presented.
