Notes: Abstract Several small bodies of metabasite (maximum dimensions of 1000 m x 500 m) are included in the metamorphic rocks of the Nevado-Filabride Complex in the Betic Cordilleras (Almeria Region). The body of 400 m x 100 m, located 200 m due west of the Lubrin village, contains troctolitic gabbro with well-preserved igneous textures and mineral compositions, wholly amphibolitized gabbro, garnet-bearing metagabbro eclogite. Along with the textural and mineral changes, sensible and regular geochemical variations can be observed, where the content of MgO decreases from 24% to 11%, while that of CaO and Na2O increases from 7% to 11% and from 2% to 3%, respectively. In addition, the content of some minor elements such as Sr, Y, Nb, Zr and Sc increases while that of Ni and Cr decreases from troctolitic gabbro to the eclogite. The amphibolitized gabbro shows values scattered around those of the troctolitic gabbro. These geochemical variations are ascribed to inherited differences in the pre-metamorphic protolith, i.e. a fractionated gabbro which varies from olivine-rich to clinopyroxene-rich gabbro. Nevertheless, some metasomatism affected the Lubrin body without changing the main chemical trends, as documented by the significantly different 87Sr/86Sr ratios of each rock-type. This points to a metasomatism which involved the introduction of crustal radiogenic strontium. The petrographical and mineral chemical features are interpreted to be the result of syn-metamorphic fluid circulation possibly combined with deformation by shearing. The igneous texture and mineral chemistry have been retained wherever both fluid circulation and shearing were ineffective. On the contrary, where both events were effective, the formation of eclogite occurred. Later, the entire body underwent a retrogressive amphi-bolitic stage under greenschist facies conditions, which was probably responsible for the formation of the amphibolitized gabbro portion and for the retrogression of the eclogite.

Notes: Abstract. A device for self-separating newly metamorphosed post-larvae prawns from larval culture tanks was designed based on the rheotactic activity exhibited by freshwater prawns after metamorphosis into post-larvae. The performance and effectiveness of the post-larvae selector were evaluated under (a) 24-h periods, (b) four water flows and (c) at two tank depths. A high migratory response (90% confidence level) during the dark period with a water flow range of approximately 11 pm was found. Thus the device has shown to be highly efficient in separating post-larvae in mixed population tanks. The avoidance of excessive handling stress, and the continuous automatic removal of post-larvae immediately following metamorphosis into juveniles are two of the most important advantages of this design as compared to other separation devices.

Notes: Abstract Pectic activity in autolyzed cultures of Botrytis cinerea in a medium with and without pectin was similar, but in the medium with pectin maximal activities occurred in younger cultures. The pectic activities found were polygalacturonase, polymethylgalacturonase, endo activity (pectin as substrate) and pectin lyase. The molecular weights of polygalacturonase, polymethylgalacturonase and endo activity (pectin as substrate) were 36000, 33000 and 30200 daltons respectively, and the molecular weight of pectin lyase was 18200 daltons. By gel electrophoresis four different pectic activities were detected, three in the top of the gel and one in the bottom. Two enzymes were characterized, the polygalacturonase activity (first band in the top) inhibited by Ca++ and the pectin lyase activity (in the bottom) which was not inhibited by Ca++. These enzymes are not induced by the presence of pectin in the medium during degradation of Botrytis cinerea.

Notes: Abstract The pathogenicity of a strain of Conidiobolus coronatus isolated from Aenolamia postica was investigated in 152 mice, 42 guinea pigs and 47 hamsters. Four routes of inoculation were used: intraperitoneal, subcutaneous, intratracheal and scarification in the oral mucosa. Each animal was inoculated 3 times at 3 week intervals. Animals were sacrificed at 1, 8, 15, 45 of 225 days after the first inoculation. Observations of macroscopic lesions (nodules, abscesses, adhesions, etc.) direct examinations, cultures and histopathological studies of different tissues were performed. The aforementioned lesions of tissue were the most frequently found and all of them were resolved by spontaneous cure. The animals inoculated intraperitoneally and subcutaneouslly presented the highest number of positive results. The histopathological features at the 1st and 8th days after inoculation showed an acute inflamatory infiltrate with well preserved fungus filaments; at the 15th day granulomas with giant cells were observed containing fragmented and disintegrated fungal hyphae; at the 45th and 225th days a fibrosis reaction was observed and no fungal filaments, could be found. In no animal was rhinoentomophthoromycosis never reproduced, and according to these results it is considered that either this strain is not a pathogen or its pathogenicity is very low.

Notes: Abstract Carrier scattering mechanisms in p-indium selenide are investigated by means of the temperature dependence of the Hall mobility (160–500 K) and thermopower (200–300 K). An anomalous behaviour of the Hall voltage, which changes sign below 215 K, is interpreted through the existence of planar aggregates of ionized shallow donor impurities that create potential wells behaving as deep donors and in which a low concentration of two-dimensional free electrons can exist. This fact is taken into account through equations for two-carrier Hall effect. Holes are found to be predominantly scattered by anA ′ 1 homopolar phonon with an energy of 27.8 meV. From thermopower results, the density of states effective mass in the valence band is determined,m dv * =(1.5±0.2)m 0.

Notes: Summary The zinc concentration in the brains of two species of lizard was determined by atomic-absorption spectrophotometry. The zinc concentration was found to be highest in the telencephalon of Lacerta galloti (21.1 μg/g fresh weight) and Podarcis hispanica (16.77±0.8 μg/g) while the mesencephalon and brain stem exhibited lower zinc concentrations, i.e., 7.0 μg/g in Lacerta galloti and 6.08±0.4 μg/g in Podarcis hispanica. This high telencephalic concentration of zinc is paralleled by intense and well-defined Timm reactivity used for demonstrating the presence of zinc-containing boutons at the light-microscope level. Volumetricdensitometric studies of these Timm-reactive zones were performed using serial transverse sections of the same lizard brains.
