    Description: The observation of MeV gamma radiation from a burst on August 5, 1985 is reported. The burst was dominated by a single peak about 2 s wide, with softer, lower-level emission lasting about 20 s anywhere in the burst in any energy range. In the energy range from about 560 keV to about 10 MeV, the burst peaked about 0.3 s before the peak at lower energies. Radiation in the 10-16 MeV energy range was detected about 3 s before the lower-energy radiation, with roughly the same pulse width. This radiation was not detected during the main part of the burst. The energy of this burst in the range above 1 MeV was a significant fraction of the total burst energy, confirming earlier SMM results. If the appearance of high-energy photons prior to those at low energies is a ubiquitous feature of bursts or a class of bursts, current theoretical models may require considerable revision.

    Description: The operation of a double scatter telescope and the evaluation of data obtained during a 24 hour balloon flight are discussed. An increase in gamma rays was observed as the galactic anti-center crossed the aperature of the telescope. Searches for lines from p(n,gamma)d at 2.2 MeV, C-12* at 4.4 MeV and on -16* at 6.1 MeV and for other lines broadened or redshifted are being conducted to identify the processes responsible for the production of celestial gamma rays. Two upper limits for lines in the angalactic anti-center direction at 4.4 MeV and 6.1 MeV are 6 and 4 x 10 to the minus 4 power gamma/sq cm-s.

    Description: A search for weak gamma-ray bursts was conducted using a sensitive balloon-borne detector. One burst was detected in 64 hr of observation. The upper limit to the burst rate is 2300 bursts/yr above 6 x 10 to the -7th ergs/sq cm for simple spatial distribution models. Comparison with satellite results indicates that the slope of the log N-log S curve can be no steeper than -1 between 10 to the -4th and 10 to the -6th ergs/sq cm. A detailed procedure for calculating detector sensitivity to bursts is provided.

    Description: Although the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) to be flown on the Gamma Ray Observatory has as its primary objective the detection of gamma ray bursts, its uncollimated design will enable it to serve a unique function as an all-sky monitor for bright hard X-ray and low-energy gamma ray sources. Pulsating sources may be detected by conventional techniques such as summed-epoch and Fourier analyses. The BATSE will, in addition, be able to use Earth occultation in an unprecedented way to monitor sufficiently bright sources as often as several times per day over approx. 85% of the sky. Estimates of the expected BATSE sensitivity using both of these techniques are presented.

    Description: The Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) is expected to provide new and better observational data on bursts to test current and future models of burst sources. These data will include: (1) the celestial distribution of hundreds of burst sources over the life of the mission, (2) burst locations within several degrees, within 2 days after their occurrence, (3) observations of weaker bursts and better observations of short timescale fluctuations and spectral variations, (4) observations by a single experiment over a much larger energy range than previously available, and (5) more sensitive measurements of the spectral features which have been observed in many bursts. This paper briefly describes the GRO mission, the BATSE instrumentation and the burst observational capabilities.

    Description: Results are reported for measurements of cosmic diffuse gamma rays performed with a double Compton scatter gamma-ray telescope flows aboard a balloon at 3.5-g/sq cm residual atmosphere. The operation and calibration of the telescope are briefly reviewed, unwanted backgrounds are identified, and the only significant background for the telescope used is shown to arise from the interaction of albedo neutrons with hydrogen and carbon in one of the liquid scintillators. The fluxes of cosmic diffuse gamma rays with energies of 2 to 3, 3 to 5, 5 to 7, 7.5 to 10 MeV are listed, and upper limits are provided for energies of 10 to 15 and 15 to 25 MeV. These data are compared with numerous previous measurements, and no indication is found that the diffuse radiation is statistically different from isotropic. Upper limits are placed on the gamma-ray fluxes (mainly 3 to 25 MeV) from various localized sources.

    Description: The efficiency of collecting solar energy using a Fresnel type lens was measured for two different collectors. A flow collector utilizes the temperature difference and heat capacity in water measurements to determine the amount of absorbed energy retained from sun rays passing through the Fresnel lens. A static collector is a hollow copper box filled with vegetable heating oil for absorption of focused solar radiation.

    Description: A balloonborne gamma-ray spectrometer comprising an array of high-purity n-type germanium (HPGe) detectors surrounded by an active NaI(T1) collimator and Compton suppressing anticoincidence shield was flown on May 29-30, 1987. The average column depth of residual atmosphere in the direction of SN 1987A at float altitude was 6.3 g/sq cm during the observation. The 3-sigma upper limit obtained for the 1238-keV line from Co-56 is 0.0013 photons/sq cm s. The corresponding limit for the 847-keV line is 0.0017 photons/sq cm s.
