Notes: SYNOPSIS. The helical coiling state of a glycerinated stalk in the family Vorticellidae had been regarded, without any evidence, as a reversible and completely equilibrated mechano-chemical system regulated by the external free Ca2+ concentration. Our present detailed observations of many individual stalks of glycerinated Vorticella convallaria revealed that the contraction-extension cycle of the helical stalks caused by increasing and decreasing free Ca2+ concentrations in the medium represents a kind of hysteresis. This phenomenon was observed in extensively glycerinated Vorticella in a medium of very low or physiological ionic strength, as well as in briefly glycerinated ciliates. With regard to the configurational change in various parts of a glycerinated stalk during the contraction-extension cycle, it was found that the initial bending of the stalk caused by increasing free Ca2+ concentration begins to take place near the zooid (head) while the initial reextension of the stalk with decreasing free Ca2+ concentration begins to take place near the zooid (head) while the initial reextension of the stalk with decreasing free Ca2+ concentration takes place simultaneously throughout the entire stalk. The Ca2+ threshold for complete reextension of the part of the stalk near the rootlet was found to be much higher than that near the zooid.

Notes: Bluefin tuna oxymyoglobin (oxyMb) solutions were frozen either quickly at −80°C or slowly at −2O°C, thawed, and the metmyoglobin (metMb) to total myoglobin (Mb) ratio (metMb%) determined. When quick freezing was applied, autoxidation was clearly pH-dependent, with a minimum (metMb%, 15–40) at around pH 5.9–6.3. When slowly frozen and thawed, on the other hand, tuna Mb generally showed an extremely high metMb%. Freezing and thawing partially insolubilized tuna Mb, depending upon pH. The Mb showed the minimum ratio of insolubilization at pH 6–6.3 again. Insolubilization of tuna Mb was markedly accelerated by NaCl.

Notes: The foot, opercular and visceral muscles were excised from the turban shell Batillus cornutus, and their heat-induced changes in toughness and ultrastructure were compared. When heated up to 30°C, the toughness of foot muscle decreased in the upper and middle regions, but increased in the lower region. The toughness of these three regions decreased at temperatures between 50-70°C, where collagen might be denatured. Some changes in toughness were also observed in the opercular muscle by heating up to 30°C, whereas the toughness of visceral muscle remained unchanged over a wide range of temperature. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the intrinsic structure of collagen fibrils in each muscle was lost at 60°C, with partial swelling.

Notes: The intrisic viscosity [η] of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was determined in aqueous solutions with various concentrations cb of borax (Na2B4O7) as functions of molecular weight M and concentration cs of NaCl as an added salt. Polyelectrolyte viscosity behaviour was observed for the systems containing both borax and NaCl, due to the complexation with negatively charged borate ions B(OH)-4 · [η] changes depending on the ionic strength I. It was found that the Stock-mayer-Fixman treatment for the molecular-weight dependence of [η] is valid in the lower molecular-weight range (M 〈 105), even though the present PVA chain contains some intrachain crosslinks. Theta conditions can be attained at an appropriate concentration cs Θ of NaCl. The value of cs Θ is dependent on cb, but the conformational parameter from the Stockmayer-Fixman treatment K0 is almost independent of cb. The effect of intrachain crosslinks becomes evident only as a considerably large negative value for the excluded volume parameter B at infinite ionic strength. In addition, the electrostatic part of the expansion factor α3e was found to be linearly correlated to a reduced parameter (M/I)1/2 for all cb systems, from the slope of which the charge density was estimated.

Notes: Ten fractions of poly(allylammonium chloride) were investigated at 25°C in sodium chloride solutions of various concentrations, cs, by viscosity and light scattering techniques. The molecular weight (Mw)-intrinsic viscosity [η] relationships were established at four NaCl concentrations. The unperturbed dimensions estimated from the Stockmayer-Fixman plot are independent of cs. The second virial coefficient A2 and the excluded volume parameter B as well as [η] were found to be proportional to cS-1/2 and to have negative values in the limit of infinite cs. In addition, it was found that the electrostatic part of the expansion factor can be expressed in terms of a reduced parameter (Mw/cs)1/2 in a fairly wide range of Mw and cs.

Notes: Dynamic viscoelastic measurements, E′ and E″, were carried out on solution-crystallized and melt-crystallized samples of fractionated isotactic polypropylene over the temperature range of -100°C to 150°C. The molecular weight ranged from 1.26 × 104 to 1.77 × 105. The effects of swelling and annealing on the α and β peaks were more pronounced for the lower molecular weight fraction than for the higher one. It was found that both the untreated solution-crystallized and quenched melt-crystallized samples contain a fair amounts of a constrained amorphous phase in which the molecular motions were so depressed that the corresponding peak could be observed as the low-temperature component of the α peak. These constraints on the molecular motions are considered to originate from the spatial restrictions imposed by the presence of the surrounding crystallities.

Notes: Spiro[2,4]hepta-4,6-diene, a derivative of cyclopentadiene, was polymerized at -76°C with various triphenylmethyl salts as initiator. The polymer consists only of the 1,2- and 1,4-addition structures, and their contents can be determined by the relative area of the olefin proton peaks. The polymer structure changed characteristically with the polymerization conditions. The content of 1,4-structure decreased with increasing polarity of the medium from 45-70 in toluene to 25-30% in 7:3 CH2Cl2-CH3CN. In 1:1 CH2Cl2-toluene, the 1,4-structure content decreased from 70% to 40% with increasing radii of counteranions. These results were interpreted according to the model of the cationic propagation proposed earlier, as arising from the different tightness of the propagating ion pair. In the case of pentacoordinate counteranions, in particular SnCl5-, the 1,4-structure content was greater than expected from the anion size alone and decreased with increasing initiator concentrations, in contrast with the behavior of the other tetra- and hexacoordinate anions. This was attributed to the possibly facile aggregation of the pentacoordinate anion. However, the common ion effect was not observed.
