    Notes: Abstract Hall effect, DLTS and low-temperature photoluminescence measurements were used to study the effect of dimeric (As2) vs tetrameric (As4) vapour species on the electrical and optical properties of nominally undoped and of Ge-doped GaAs layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The arsenic molecular beam was generated from separate As2 and As4 sources, respectively, and from a single source providing an adjustable As2/As4 flux ratio. The occurence of the previously described defect related bound exciton lines in the luminescence spectra at 1.504–1.511 eV was found to be directly correlated with the presence of three deep states (M1, M3, M4) which are characteristic of MBE grown GaAs. The intensity of the extra luminescence lines and simultaneously the concentration of the deep electron traps can be reduced substantially simply by decreasing the As4/As2 flux ratio. The incorporation of defect related centers as well as of amphoteric dopants like Ge strongly depends on the surface chemistry involved. Therefore, a considerably lower autocompensation ratio in Ge-dopedn-GaAs is obtained with As2 molecular beam species which provide a higher steady-state arsenic surface population.

    Notes: Abstract Nominally undoped AlxGa1−xAs grown by molecular beam epitaxy from As4 species at elevated substrate temperatures of 670°C exhibits well-resolved excitonic fine structure in the low-temperature photoluminescence spectra, if the effective As-to-(Al+Ga) flux ratio on the growth surface is kept within a rather narrow range of clearly As-stabilized conditions. In contrast to previous results on AlxGa1−xAs of composition 0.15〈x〈0.25, the prominent carbon-related recombination at ∼23 meV below the bound exciton line was foundnot to shift in energy by changing the excitation intensity. This implies a simple freeelectron carbon-acceptor recombination mechanism for the line without any participation of a donor. In AlxGa1−xAs of composition close to the direct-to-indirect cross-over point, two distinct LO-phonons separated by 34 and 48 meV from the (D 0,C 0) peak position at x=0.43 were observed which were before only detectable by Raman scattering experiments. The intensity of the carbon-impurity related luminescence lines in bulk-type AlxGa1−xAs and GaAs layers was found to be strongly reduced, as compared to the excitonic recombination lines, if the respective active layer was covered by a very thin confinement layer of either GaAs on top of AlxGa1−xAs or vice versa grown in the same growth cycle.

    Description / Table of Contents: Durch Messungen von Tg, Tm und Tc (Trübungspunkt) wurden Phasendiagramme der vier verträglichen Polymermischungen von chlorierten isotaktischen Polypropylenen (Chlorgehalt 39,2 (CPP-40) und 49,8 Gew.-% (CPP-50)) mit Poly(ethylen-co-vinylacetat)en (Vinylacetatgehalt 40 (EVA-40) und 45 Gew.-% (EVA-45)) untersucht. Von den vier Mischungspaaren war die Mischung von CPP-50 mit EVA-40 am besten verträglich.
    Notes: By measuring Tg, Tm and Tc (cloud point) phase diagrams for the four miscible blends of chlorinated isotactic polypropylenes (chlorine content 39.2 (CPP-40) and 49.8 wt.-% (CP-50)) with Poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)s (vinyl acetate contents 40 (EVA-40) and 45 wt.-% (EVA-45)) were investigated. The blend of CPP-50 with EVA-40 was the most compatible of the four blend pairs.

    Notes: After implantation a stable bond between the implant and the surrounding tissue is required. Therefore a high cell adhesion of the polymer surface of the implant must be achieved. Depending on the treatment time of a polydimethylsiloxane foil with oxygen plasma, the cell adhesion can be improved. FT-IR spectroscopy and ESCA analysis were used to characterize the surface modification. The cell spreading and cell adhesion increase with increasing hydrophilic character of the polymer surface after plasma treatment. A pronounced correlation was found between the efficiency of DNA and protein content, characterizing cell growth, and the spreading of the cells.Polydimethylsiloxane, Glow-Discharge, Surface Modification, Cell Adhesion, Cell Proliferation.

    Notes: The conformational analysis of the CD spectrum is reported for the synthetic and membrane-modifying nonadecapeptide analog of alamethicin N-t-Boc-(Aib-L-Ala)5-Gly-Ala-Aib-Pro-Ala-Aib-Aib-Glu(OBzl)- Gln-OMe. The CD data are evaluated according to three different methods and are discussed with respect to those obtained from natural alamethicin and suitable models such as N-t-Boc-(Aib-L-Ala)7-OPOE, fragments of the synthetic nonadecapeptide, and the hexadecapeptide N-t-Boc-(Aib-L-Ala)5-Pro-Ala-Aib-Aib-Glu(OBzl)-Gln-OMe. The synthetic nonadecapeptide with the longer helical region exhibits membrane activities comparable to those of alamethicin, whereas the hexadecapeptide with the shorter helix is inactive.

The molecular conformation is right-handed helical with three α-(5 → 1 hydrogen bonds) and three β-turns (4 → 1 hydrogen bonds). All but two of the hydrogen bonds are significantly longer than the usual value and show bifurcation to some extent. The α/310r-helical nonapeptide molecules are arranged head-to-tail along the a direction. The resulting linear antiparallel chains are linked by a weak intermolecular hydrogen bridge, thus forming a two-dimensional layer structure in the ab plane. The conformation of this nonapeptide is almost identical with that of the corresponding C-terminal part found by x-ray crystallography of the eicosapeptide alamethicin.

    Notes: The x-ray structure of Boc-L-Ala-Aib-Ala-Aib-Ala-Glu(OBzl)-Ala-Aib-Ala-Aib-Ala-OMe(I) represents the first α-helix determined by direct methods. This undecapeptide is a model of the N-terminus of alamethicin, and it exhibits voltage-dependent pores in bilayer membranes at a higher voltage and concentration than alamethicin. The molecule crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21 with a = 10.602(1), b = 23.884(3), c = 13.622(1) Å, β = 95.61(6)°, and Z = 2. It adopts a right-handed α-helical conformation in the solid state with intramolecular 5 → 1 hydrogen bonds. An additional intramolecular hydrogen bond is bifurcated, forming a stronger 4 → 1 interaction (i.e., a β-turn III) and a weaker 5 → 1 interaction, thus prolonging the α-helical part up to 9 residues. The α-helix radius of 2.1 Å, the height per residue (distance Ni … Ni + 4) of 1.53 Å, the resulting length of the α-helical part of 13.8 Å (9 residues) resp. 15.3 Å (10 residues), the van der Waals radius (4.7 Å), and the minimal diameter of pores formed by aggregation of 3-10 α-helices were calculated omitting the Glu(OBzl) side chain. In the crystal, the α-helices are linked head to tail via two hydrogen bridges forming continuous chains. Adjacent helices are oriented in antiparallel with their helix axes and have only van der Waals contacts.

    Notes: A novel synthetic foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) peptide vaccine consisting of a synthetic B-cell and macrophage activator covalently linked to an amphiphilic α-helical T-cell epitope was developed. The low molecular weight vaccine of 3400 daltons is composed of virus VP1 antigenic determinant and the immunologically active lipotripeptide tripalmitoyl-S-glyceryl-cysteinyl-seryl-serine (P3CSS) as built-in adjuvant. The vaccine, tripalmitoyl-S-glyceryl-cysteinyl-seryl-seryl-FMDV-VP1 (VP1 = serotype O1K 135-154) induces protection against homologous challenge and serotype-specific virus neutralizing antibodies in guinea pigs after single administration without further adjuvants or carriers. A P3CSS conjugate with the FMDV-VP1 segment 135-154 of strain O Wuppertal produced only poor cross-protection against challenge with O1K virus.The antigenic determinant VP1(135-154) is an amphiphilic α-helix, as shown by CD. Molecular dynamics simulations (MDS) carried out using the highly homologous α-helical alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) segment H3 as starting conformation for VP1(138-149) suggest that the FMDV segment 138-149 may adopt α-helical conformation during binding to its T-cell receptor, and that the development of the system during MDS may be considered as the dissociation step of the complex.

    Notes: The CD spectra and melting profiles have been measured for nine synthetic double-stranded RNAs containing I · C instead of G · C base pairs: poly[r(I) · r(C)], poly[r(I-C) · r(I-C)], poly[r(A-I-C) · r(I-C-U)], poly[r(A-C) · r(I-U)], poly[r(A-I) · r(C-U)], poly[r(A-C-C) · r(I-I-U)], poly[r(A-A-C) · r(I-U-U)], poly[r(A-C-U) · r(A-I-U)], and poly[r(A-U-C) · r(I-A-U)]. CD spectra have not previously been reported for the latter six of these polymers. The substitution of inosinate for guanylate led to recognizable CD differences, with all but two of the polymers having two resolved positive bands above 230 nm. Also, the I-containing RNAs differed from their G-containing counterparts in the almost complete absence of negative CD bands at long wavelengths and in the reduction of negative CD bands near 210 nm. First-neighbor comparisons showed that the CD spectra of the I-containing RNAs were consistent with the nearest-neighbor sequences of the polymers, as previously shown for G-containing RNAs (D. M. Gray, J.-J. Liu, R. L. Ratliff, and F. S. Allen, Biopolymers (1981) 20, 1337-1382). Moreover, two of the first-neighbor comparisons involved spectra of poly[r(A) · r(U)] and poly[r(I) · r(C)], polymers known to be in the A family of conformations in fibers (S. Arnott, D. W. L. Hukins, S. D. Dover, W. Fuller, and A. Hodgson, (1973) J. Mol. Biol. 81, 107-122). Thus, differences in the CD spectra of I- and G-containing RNAs could be simply explained as resulting from differences in the hypoxanthine and guanine chromophores, without invoking differences in conformation. Finally, melting temperatures of the I-containing RNAs were found to vary much less with base composition than do the melting temperatures of G-containing RNAs, since A · U base pairs are closer to I · C than to G · C base pairs in stability.
