Notes: Abstract The goldfish (Carassius auratus) has proven an advantageous model for investigations of the neuroendocrine regulation of pituitary hormone secretion in teleost fishes. Investigations examining the secretion of adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) and melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) from pituitary cellsin vitro have been used to identify neuropeptides influencing goldfish corticotrope and melanotrope activity. Ovine CRF, urotensin I (UI), arginine vasotocin (AVT), isotocin and angiotensins I and II stimulate the release of ACTH from corticotropesin vitro. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), oCRF, UI and neuropeptide Y stimulate the release of MSH from melanotropesin vitro. Immunocytochemical studies have revealed the presence of separate CRF- and UI-immunoreactive perikarya in the hypothalamus suggesting the existence of two structurally similar, yet distinct, hypothalamic CRF-UI-like peptides. Interactions of AVT and CRF in the regulation of ACTH secretion is suggested from studies demonstrating the co-localization of AVT- and CRF-immunoreactivities in perikarya of the preoptic-hypophyseal system. These investigations demonstrate that the secretory activity of goldfish corticotropes and melanotropes is influenced by a diversity of neuropeptides of hypothalamic origin.

Notes: A model for metal uptake by microorganisms based on surface adsorption has been developed, and then applied to the uptake of cadmium by Chlorella vulgaris. A linear equilibrium relationship between metal in the solution and that adsorbed on the cell surface is assumed and confirmed at low cadmium concentrations by short-term uptake experiments. When it incorporates a description of cell growth, the model predicts an initial rapid uptake and a subsequent slow uptake. Such behavior has often been observed in experiments with growing microorganisms. This indicates that the slow uptake, sometimes thought to be active or metabolic, could be due to the simultaneous effects of growth and surface adsorption. The model shows that initial metal uptake is fast and approaches equilibrium within a few seconds. This prediction is in agreement with experimental results in a batch system: Equilibrium is reached before the first samples are taken (at 10 min) and there is then no measurable change until growth provides a significant increase in cell surface (after several hours). Thus the equilibrium constant can be calculated from experimental results of uptake at 10 min. The equilibrium is found to be affected by phosphate concentration; the amount of cadmium adsorbed on the cell decreases as the concentration of phosphate is increased. Long-term uptake experiments in growing cultures show a greater metal accumulation than predicted by the adsorption model, suggesting the involvement in the slow long-term uptake of some mechanism other than adsorption. This is confirmed by experiments in which uptake in cultures exposed to cadmium throughout the growth period is compared with short-term uptake in similar cultures grown in the absence of cadmium. The modeling approach to metal adsorption provides a basis for further development. A model combining description of adsorption and of intracellular accumulation is necessary to provide a more complete description. Such a model, with precise definitions of system parameters and means of evaluating these parameters from experimental results, will be a powerful tool in investigation of metal uptake by microorganisms.

Notes: An analysis of the radial flow cell is presented to show that the assumption of creeping laminar flow should be used cautiously. Simple models which account for the influence of fluid inertial forces over most of the width of the plate are reviewed. A modified Reynolds number is introduced which may be used to test the validity of the creeping flow solution.

Notes: Kinetic models for glycoside hydrolysis and solasodiene formation are combined, and using previous experimental data the effect of changes in reaction conditions on hydrolysis times and the proportion of solasodiene in the final hydrolysed product are established. These are used to give a set of guidelines for commercial hydrolysis. The use of the models for new commercial situations is explained.

Notes: Solasodine from Solanum plants is a potential raw material for steroid drug manufacture. Acid hydrolysis of the naturally occuring glycosides of solasodine is a major step in production of the aglycone. As part of a detailed study of the hydrolysis of solasodine glycosides, the hydrolysis procedure has been mathematically modelled. Two models are presented and have been used to obtain kinetic data for the reactions at a number of different reaction conditions. The subsequent conversion of solasodine to solasodiene is considered in Part II of this paper; the combined reactions and guidelines for commercial hydrolysis are presented in Part III.

Notes: The undesirable conversion of solasodine product to solasodiene which occurs during the acid hydrolysis of solasodine glycosides has been mathematically modelled. The model incorporates acid loss which results from reaction of acid with alcohol solvents. The model has been used to obtain kinetic data for the reaction at a number of different reaction conditions.

Notes: The Interfacial reactions between Al and RuO2, MoOx and WNx diffusion barriers on Si (100) wafers have been studied. The diffusion barrier structures were analyzed before and after various heat treatments using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM). Al was found to reduce the oxides of both Ru and Mo. A 100 Å thick Al2O3 layer developed between the Al and the RuO2 films during annealing at 500°C for 30 minutes. The formation of interfacial Al2O3 efficiently prevents Al penetration but may cause a too high contact resistance for applications in contact structures of microelectronic devices. The WNx barrier was stable after annealing at 600°C for 30 minutes, if the film was exposed to air prior to Al deposition. If, instead, the Al was deposited in situ, the structure failed after annealing at 500°C due to a reaction between Al and W giving WAl12. A thin Al2O3 layer was detected between the Al and the WNx films of the air exposed sample. This layer had the effect of retarding the Al-W reaction and thereby raised the failure temperature of the barrier by at least 100°C.

Notes: Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) have been used to examine the nature and quality of wax-coated RDX crystals. SEM allows a visual assessment of wax-coated crystals and comparison of different coating processes. XPS has allowed a semiquantitative determination of the degree of wax coverage by measurement of the carbon to nitrogen photoelectron emissions and calculation of the percentage of wax coverage using a simple mathematical treatment.
