Notes: Thermal and mechanical studies on many linear polyesters have revealed their behavior in crystalline, liquid crystalline, and amorphous phases. Their phase behavior in binary compositions has also been studied by a range of additional techniques and in combinations including the polycarbonate of bisphenol-A. Regions of amorphous compatibility and incompatibility have been identified and measures made of transition temperature changes with composition. The conditions for transreaction have also been determined and the properties measured for the resultant new copolymers.

Notes: This paper discusses a mathematical model governing the galvanic corrosion phenomenon and surveys the research efforts which have been applied to find a solution to the above problem. The authors classify these techniques into three categories. The first is the finite difference method (FDM), the second is the finite element method (FEM) and the last is the boundary element method (BEM).

Notes: This paper describes the proper external potential formulation of a cathodic protection system employed for corrosion prevention of structures in infinite electrolytes. The boundary condition associated with the mathematical formulation is not of the standard type encountered in hydrodynamic, electrostatic or heat transfer applications. The developed mathematical model is discretized by the boundary element technique, which is then solved iteratively by the Newton-Raphson method.

Notes: This paper further illustrates the applicability of multiple internal reflectance infrared spectroscopy to the analysis of near-surface photooxidation. The results are compared with transmission infrared spectra to evaluate compositional gradients resulting from photooxidation and the influence of oxygen diffusion. The sample was a solvent-cast film of atactic, narrow distribution polystyrene, Mw of 100,000, that had been drawn to a ratio of 3.0 at 110°C by solid state coextrusion. Irradiation of these thin films, ∼25μm thickness, was performed on exposure to air at 35°C for periods of up to 6 h using a mercury source emitting at 254 nm. On photooxidation, a board peak appears at 3200-3500 cm-1, attributable to hydroperoxide formation. The most dramatic increase in the infrared spectra is found for a carbonyl band at 1730 cm-1. It appears to result from an aromatic acid group since it is shifted to 1660 cm-1 on immersion of the oxidized polystyrene films in aqueous ammonium hydroxide. It is confirmed that the photooxidation of polystyrene occurs preferentially at the surface and that this reaction rate is greatly reduced in the drawn polystyrene film.

Notes: Because of its possible use as a blocked “post-polymerization crosslinking agent” for polymers containing labile hydrogen, the structure of the acetone oxime adduct of 4,4′-methylenebis-(phenylisocyanate) has been determined. 13C and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has identified this product to be N,N′-(2-propyloximino)-4,4′-methylenebis(phenylcarbamate). Chemical shift assignments were based on information obtained by proton decoupled, off-resonance decoupled, and gated decoupled 13C-NMR, proton-NMR, and semiemperical substituent chemical shift (SCS) parameters.

Notes: Amorphous poly(ethylene terephthalate) has been solid state coextruded to a series of draw ratios up to 4.4 at 50, 60, 70 and 90°C. These uniaxially drawn samples have been examined by optical microscopy and light scattering and for increases in crystallinity and birefringence as a function of draw ratio and draw temperature. The birefringence for PET may be among the highest yet reported - 0.21.

Notes: Understanding the deformation behavior of an amorphous thermoplastic, e.g., poly(ethylene terephthalate) (a-PET) and one of semicrystallinity, viz., i-PP, can be is of both fundamental and practical importance. Much has been done to study the influence of temperature and strain, but not the influence of deformation conditions on the three-dimensional orientation of many thermoplastic. In this study we consider the incremental effect of hydrostatic pressure and process geometry on strain-induced deformation. a-PET has been free drawn (i.e., no hydrostatic pressure) isothermally on a tenter frame device. The hydrostatic, equibiaxial deformation was achieved by a forging process involving squeezing between two circular plates. These two processes have been carried out at a series of deformation rates, with the three-dimensional refractive index measurements having been made on the PET and i-PP films using a modified Abbe refractometer, as per Samuels. The reported trirefringence measurement provides a sensitive scale for the planar deformation.
