Notes: The substrate requirement of the intrinsic 3′-5′ exonuclease of DNA polymerase B1 from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus P2 (Sso polB1) was investigated. Sso polB1 degraded both single-stranded (ss) and double-stranded (ds) DNA at similar rates in vitro at temperatures of physiological relevance. No difference was found in the cleavage of 3′-recessive, 3′-protruding and blunt-ended DNA duplexes at these temperatures. However, a single-stranded nick in duplex DNA was less readily employed by the enzyme to initiate cleavage than a free 3′ end. At lower temperatures, Sso polB1 cleaved ssDNA more efficiently than dsDNA. The strong 3′-5′ exonuclease activity of polB1 was inhibited by 50% in the presence of 2 μM dNTPs, but remained measurable at up to 600 μM dNTPs. In view of the strong exonuclease activity of Sso polB1 on matched dsDNA, we suggest that S. solfataricus may have evolved mechanisms to regulate the exonuclease/polymerase ratio of the enzyme, thereby reducing the cost of proofreading at high temperature.

Notes: Abstract The development of uniaxial orientation by solid-state extrusion at 60 to 90° C has been evaluated for both the amorphous and crystalline components of a polyethylene terephthalate). Analyses involved X-ray diffraction, birefringence and visable dichroism. The dichroism was evalulated from a host dye molecule. The initial PET film for draw was amorphous and isotropic. Orientation functions for the amorphous and the developed crystalline phases are reported at a series of draw ratios up to 4.4.

Notes: [Auszug] Caspases are important in the life and death of immune cells and therefore influence immune surveillance of malignancies. We tested whether genetic variants in CASP8, CASP10 and CFLAR, three genes important for death receptor–induced cell killing residing in tandem order on chromosome 2q33, ...

Notes: Abstract Center weighted median (CWM) filters, which have been recognized as detail preserving filters, are an important and the simplest subclass of weighted median (WM) filters. In this paper, we analyze the root signals of two-dimensional (2-D) CWM filters. In particular, we derive the required form for a signal to be a root of a 2-D CWM filter. The required form of signals to be roots is then used to evaluate the detail preserving properties of 2-D CWM filters. As examples, the detail preserving properties of some 2-D CWM filters are compared with other detail preserving filters, i.e. multilevel median filters. The generation of binary root signals of some 2-D CWM filters is treated in the term of the smallest surviving object (SSO). It is illustrated by some examples that CWM filters with different orientation of windows can be useful in image segmentation.

Description / Table of Contents: Thermotrop flüssigkristalline Copolyester aus Vanillinsäure (V), 4-Hydroxybenzoesäure (B) und Polyethylenterephthalat (E) wurden mittels 1H-NMR-Spektroskopie und Gelpermeationschromatographie (GPC) untersucht.
Notes: Thermotropic liquid-crystalline copolyesters made from vanillic acid (V), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (B) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (E) were examined by 1H-NMR and GPC investigations. Nine possible diads could be identified and assigned. The sequence distribution of V/B/E copolyesters tends to change from random to block with an increase of B content in the copolyesters. The sequence distribution also varies slightly with catalyst concentration and polycondensation time. GPC results suggest that the V/B/E copolyesters have narrower molecular weight distribution (MWD) than B/E copolyesters. The MWD of the copolyesters narrows gradually with increasing V content from zero to 5 mol-%. The GPC chromatograms of the most V/B/E copolyesters show double peaks, which is different from the single peak of the GPC chromatograms of the B/E copolyesters.

Notes: Because of its possible use as a blocked “post-polymerization crosslinking agent” for polymers containing labile hydrogen, the structure of the acetone oxime adduct of 4,4′-methylenebis-(phenylisocyanate) has been determined. 13C and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has identified this product to be N,N′-(2-propyloximino)-4,4′-methylenebis(phenylcarbamate). Chemical shift assignments were based on information obtained by proton decoupled, off-resonance decoupled, and gated decoupled 13C-NMR, proton-NMR, and semiemperical substituent chemical shift (SCS) parameters.

Notes: Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to study the dissociation and reaction of N,N′-(2-propyloximino)-4,4′-methylenebis(phenylcarbamate), as a crosslinking agent for polymers containing labile hydrogens. The crosslinking of poly(acrylic acid), polyacrylamide, and poly(vinyl alcohol) was found to result upon heating each to 150°C for 10 min with this component at 2-10 wt %.

Notes: Solid state C-13 NMR was used to characterize the complex of diphenylmethane 4,4′-diisocyanate (MDI) with acetone oxime as a potential crosslinking agent (PCA) for the aliphatic polyester-urethane block copolymers. The formation of MDI from the PCA was followed by heating the sample at 150°C. The active hydrogen atoms on the hard segments of the block copolymers can be made to react with the diisocyanate groups of the regenerated MDI from the PCA at the elevated temperature for the crosslinking. The regeneration of—N=C=O groups is also noted by the appearance of the 2270 cm-1 band in the FT-IR spectrum of the heat treated PCA.

Notes: Thermotropic liquid crystalline copolyesters with 1.4-, 1.5-, and 2.7-naphthalenediol (NDO) units were prepared by molten-state copolycondensation. It was found that the chain structure of the copolyesters is almost the same as the structure of recurring moieties of five units. The copolyesters have a glass transition temperature above 381 K, decomposition temperature above 703 K, and melting temperature between 513 and 559 K and their melts exhibit nematic texture and stir opalescence. The copolyester melts show a usual rheological behavior depending on the NDO unit content, but much lower extrudate swell. Light-scattering patterns of the copolyester films with low crystallinity are clearly asymmetric and therefore indicate the existence of preferred orientation of the copolyester chains. Scanning electron microscopy observation suggests that the as-spun fibers of 2.7-NDO-containing copolyesters were highly oriented and fibrillated. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
