    Notes: An analysis of the signal reflections originating at the garnet film ends and of the triple transit between the microstrip transducers in magnetostatic volume wave delay lines has been performed. The influence of those effects on the band shape and on the insertion loss of magnetostatic wave devices has been inferred and compared with experimental results. In this framework, the possible utilization of the reflections for filterbank applications is also proposed.

    Notes: The successful indiffusion of Ti into single-crystalline LiNbO3 substrates is reported as a result of high-intensity ruby laser irradiation of LiNbO3 samples coated with films of Ti of 400 A(ring) thickness. The experimental data are compared to the results of cw CO2 or Ar ion laser irradiations. We conclude that the Ti indiffusion process starts with the oxidation of Ti and continues in a liquid phase.

    Notes: Low-power annealing by a pulsed laser is used to recover the structure of low-dose implanted (100) GaAs crystals. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction with variable glancing incidence is employed to detect the structural changes at different depths in the specimens. The depth dependence of the damage is studied in more detail by Rutherford backscattering analysis. The annealing results depend on the irradiation conditions. A laser energy window below the melting threshold is found within which the structure can be restored to about as high degree of crystallinity as the virgin one, without any visible surface damage. A simple theoretical estimate shows that the temperature rise of the material is far below the melting threshold. This rise is too short in time to cause substantial dopant diffusion; however, it can enhance well the point-defect mobility.

    Notes: Diamond films have been obtained on Ta polycrystalline substrates from mixtures of methane and hydrogen by the hot-filament chemical vapor deposition technique. The structural characteristics of the polycrystalline deposits have been investigated by reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), while the surface morphologies have been observed by scanning electron microscopy or carbon replica transmission electron microscopy. For one of the films, the formation of thermal spikes during the deposition process yielded a structure giving a RHEED pattern with d spacings and intensities not corresponding to the already identified carbon and diamond phases. On the base of the RHEED pattern the observed phase has been identified as a face-centered-cubic lattice, belonging to the space group F4¯3m and ascribed to a so-called X-diamond polytype.

    Notes: Fast light-induced degradation of amorphous silicon p-i-n solar cells has been investigated by replacing cw illumination by light pulses of the same average intensity. This method allows us to evaluate the long-term device performance with exposure times of the order of minutes and avoids complication due to cell temperature increase.

    Notes: Crystals of the binary complex of alcohol dehydrogenase from Sulfolobus solfataricus with NADH were shown to be twinned and not suitable for automated data collection. Several crystallization trials, performed with the aim of eliminating twinning, are described. Interestingly, crystals grown from agarose gel have been demonstrated to have a unique reciprocal lattice. These crystals are monoclinic, space group C2, with cell dimensions a = 134.47 (9), b = 85.26 (5), c = 71.76 (8) Å, β = 97.53 (4)°, and showed significant diffraction beyond 3.0 Å resolution.

    Notes: Abstract The reaction product of manganese(II) chloride and 2,5-diamino-1,3,4-thiadiazole was prepared and characterized by means of structural, and spectroscopic measurements. The crystals are monoclinic, space groupC2/c, witha=12.403(4),b=10.742(2),c=10.449(5)Å,β=92.61(3)°, andZ=4. The structure was solved by the heavy-atom method, and least-squares refinement of structural parameters led to a conventionalR factor of 0.020 for 1518 independent reflections. The structure consists of discrete molecules with twofold symmetry in which the manganese atom is coordinated in slightly distorted octahedral geometry by two nitrogen, two oxygen and two chlorine atoms.

    Notes: Abstract Recent studies have shown that the Low-Power Pulsed-Laser Annealing (LPPLA) of ion-implanted GaAs specimens can be realized in a power-density window in which a complete structural reordering is guaranted. As the experimentally employed conditions allow us to describe the theoretical problem in an unidimensional space domain, we describe here a method to investigate the in-depth temperature behavior during the low-power pulsed-laser irradiation of ion-implanted semiconductors. The application of this method to GaAs specimens shows that the upper limit of the energy density window is connected with the exceeding of the critical temperature T c below which the As evaporation rate is negligible.

    Notes: Abstract Measurements of the speed-of-sound (SOS) and of the broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) on the os calcis were recently proposed to assess osteoporotic fragility. Velocity and attenuation were measured through the heel which can be divided in three phases including hydroxyapatite, soft tissue, and fat. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of fat composition and heel width on SOS and BUA. This influence was determined from both in vitro investigations examining fat samples, phantoms, and cadaver heels, and in vivo ones observing adult volunteers as well as a wide sample section of healthy elderly women. Ultrasound velocities on various fat samples were significantly lower than those on distilled water (-65 m/second to -123 m/second). The excision of the surrounding soft tissue from cadaver heels made SOS steadily increase whereas the insertion of a 10 mm piece of lard in the lateral face of cadavers' and volunteers' heels os calcis lowered SOS about 30 m/second. ond. Furthermore, a difference of SOS was estimated at 15 m/second for a 12.5% variation of the marrow fat weight. Among 334 elderly and healthy women aged 75 and over, a significant negative correlation was found between SOS and heel width (r=-0.27; P〈0.0001). On the other hand, fat composition had no significant effect on BUA measurement, and no significant relationship was found between BUA and heel width. This study demonstrates that an increase of heel width and fat thickness provides an underestimation of os calcis SOS, but has no significant effect on BUA.
