Notes:
Abstract Consideration is given to a simple four constant description of linear viscoelastic behaviour. It is shown that the equivalent mechanical models can be physically unrealistic, with negative moduli. Furthermore, such models satisfy the requirements of i) a positive, monotonic decreasing relaxation function, and ii) positive dissipation. By implication, it is concluded that the spring-dashpot description of linear viscoelasticity is not completely general.
