Notes: A simple quantitative image processing system for pulsed soft x rays with time and spatial resolution is described. The system consists of easily obtained commercial components including a microchannel plate–phosphor screen combination, a charge coupled device camera, an image memory board, and a personal computer. To make a quantitative measurement possible, the image processing is used in conjunction with measurement of the "phosphor screen current.'' Performance of the system is examined using a soft x-ray source generated with a plasma focus device. The order of intensity, ∼1012 photons/s mm2 mrad2 0.01% BW of Ar K lines is observed for about 20 ns from the pinched plasma in which 3% of Ar is added to the 6 Torr H2.

Notes: The source is based on the principle put forward by Middleton, but modified significantly to a multifunction version for variant applications. It is equipped with a spherical molybdenum ionizer, an eight-position target wheel, and a special Cs vapor nozzle. Due to the special design, target changing and scanning are carried out only by means of rotations, to simplify the mechanism and automatic control procedures. The tube for transmitting Cs vapor, as a resistance, is connected in series in the ionizer supply circuit to reach a high enough temperature for the vapor to pass. Details of the mechanical design, operation modes, and test results are given.

Notes: We demonstrate that the fidelity of a hologram is often impaired by multiple beam interference during the recording process. We describe a simple and widely adaptable procedure for eliminating such impairment, and we give a quantitative measure of the gain in fidelity that may ensue in the case of object waves recorded on silver halide emulsion at f/6.3.

Notes: The development of a high-intensity Cs sputter negative ion source has been completed. The source is equipped with a spherical tungsten ionizer and a target wheel with 18 sample positions. The wheel is separated from the hot sputter region by a gate valve in order to change the samples rapidly and reduce cross contamination. A drive system can push the selected sample into the sputter position and pull it back to the wheel. A metal-ceramic bonded ring is used to support all the parts at sputter potential. The ring is protected from vapor depositions by a specially designed shielding structure, resulting in reliable insulation between the ionizer and the sputter samples. No insulation trouble has occurred during the work for over one year. Beams of 10-μA BeO−, 5-μA Al−, 4.5-μA Fe−, and 350-μA C−, etc. have been delivered. The normalized beam emittance ranges from (2–4) πmm mrad MeV1/2. The memory effect has been evaluated. More than 1000 and 500 times of attenuation for C− and BeO− are observed, respectively, in 10 min after a sample change. The ionization efficiency for 12C− is higher than 5.4% for a graphite sample.

Notes: Abstract In this paper a statistical ensemble of laser light is defined. The lasing field is treated as a classical variable, the spontaneous emission is considered phenomenally by using a random function. Special attention is paid to the transverse mode behaviour. To calculate the ensemble elements, an approach based on Fresnel integration has been developed. Theoretical investigations into some stripe stable resonators have been carried out. Some results for the intensity, the mode spectrum, the correlation between transverse modes, the beam quality, and the spectra of the intensity and the output power fluctuation are presented and discussed.

Notes: Abstract Taking the modal behaviours of the laser field into account, the coherence properties of laser light can be characterized by mode coherence functions (MCFs) and mode coherence coefficients (MCCs). Changes in laser light properties due to optical operations can be described by transformation laws for the MCFs and the MCCs. The transformation laws as well as transformation matrices for propagation in free space, phase transformations, spatial amplitude modulations and aperturizing are given. Furthermore, intensity distributions and intensity moments in the spatial and in the spatial frequency domains are expressed in terms of the MCCs. General expressions for the beam quality factors,M 2s, obtained using the intensity moments and some useful expressions for intensity moments of higher order are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Based on average intensity distributions at two axial positions, an experimental approach to determine the mode coherence coefficients was developed. Using this approach, investigations were carried out for a CO2 laser with a stripe resonator. The power partitions of, and cross-correlations between, modes at different aperture widths and the dependence of the beam quality on the aperture width were studied. The measuring principle, an iterative fit method, and some experimental results are presented and discussed.

Notes: Abstract We report the results of a room-temperature CW top surface-emitting laser whose light-emitting window is much smaller than the current injection area. The lowest series resistance of device is 50 Ω. It maintains single transverse mode at high current levels.

Notes: Abstract A novel hybrid surface-emitting laser and two-dimensional laser array is reported. The device consists of rectangular GaAs reflectors and edge-emitting single laser or one-dimensional laser arrays which are fabricated separately. The devices are mounted upside-down on a copper heat sink, allowing for good heat conduction. The CW operation and the reflectivity characteristics of this surface-emitting laser have been investigated.

Notes: Abstract Terraced substrate inner current stripe lasers emitting in the range of 750–780 nm are developed with very simple fabrication processes. The lasers have good performance of cw room temperature, linear light-current output over 30 mW per facet and maintain stable fundamental transverse and longitudinal mode of 2–4 times current threshold. The current threshold of 25 mA under cw room temperature operation has been achieved.
