    Description: The bright, peculiar elliptical galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128, PKS 1322-427) was one of the first extragalactic radio sources to be optically identified (Bolton et al. 1949). At a distance of 4 Mpc, Centaurus A is the closest active radio galaxy and affords the highest linear imaging resolution (1 mas approximately equal to 0.02 pc) and hence the best prospects for studying an active nucleus close to the central radio source. We present the results of multi-epoch, 8.4-GHz, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), imaging observations of the nucleus made over the past three years. The nucleus possesses a core-jet structure where the inner portion of the jet shows apparent linear motion with a velocity substantially less than the speed of light.

    Description: It is believed that a substantial population of levitated dust is present in the terminator region of the moon. Stray light scattered by this dust layer may contaminate astronomical observations made from the lunar surface using infrared, visible, and ultraviolet light. The evidence for dust levitation stems from: Surveyor vidicon images of horizon glow; anomalous brightness in photographs of the solar corona taken by Apollo astronauts while the spacecraft was just inside the moon's shadow; and observations by Apollo astronauts of streamers just prior to lunar orbital sunrise or just after lunar orbital sunset. It has been proposed that the differential charging of the lunar surface in the terminator region due to photoemission and the consequent strong local electric fields comprise the mechanism responsible for this levitation. Although quantitative data on the levitated lunar dust distribution are meager, it is possible to estimate column densities and sizes. In this paper we summarize the estimates of particulate sizes and number densities of previous authors, and construct a nominal terminator dust distribution, as a function of particulate radius and altitude above the lunar surface. Using the model we estimate the brightness of scattered sunshine for three wavelength bands. For the results in the visible wavelengths, we compare the estimated brightness with the known brightness of selected astronomical objects and discuss the implications for lunar-based astronomy.

    Description: The Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) is sensitive in the energy range from about 20 MeV to about 30,000 MeV. Electron-positron pair production by incident gamma photons is utilized as the detection mechanism. The pair production occurs in tantalum foils interleaved with the layers of a digital spark chamber system; the spark chamber records the tracks of the electron and positron, allowing the reconstruction of the arrival direction of the gamma ray. If there is no signal from the charged particle anticoincidence detector which surrounds the upper part of the detector, the spark chamber array is triggered by two hodoscopes of plastic scintillators. A time of flight requirement is included to reject events moving backward through the telescope. The energy of the gamma ray is primarily determined by absorption of the energies of the electron and positron in a 20 cm deep NaI(Tl) scintillator.

    Description: This report focuses on the development of an operational Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) system and shows the application of such a system on a space environmental test. Thin films of aluminum and tantalum were deposited on diamond substrates. These films were anodized and preexposure characterization spectra obtained using RBS and total hemispherical reflectance. The samples were exposed to energetic protons then postexposure characterization spectra was obtained using the same techniques. Conclusions based on the comparison of preexposure and postexposure spectra are presented. RBS comparison spectra show no change in the metal/metal oxide interface, while the comparison reflectance data indicate change. Explanations for this reflectance change are presented in this report.

    Description: During the all sky survey (May 1991 - Nov. 1992) of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory the Vela pulsar PSR0833-45 was in the field of view of the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) in ten separate viewing periods. The pulsar was detected in each one. The average intensity from 100 MeV to 2 GeV was (7.8 +/- 1.0) x 10 (exp -6) photons cm(exp -2) s(exp -1), which indicates that the pulsar in the years 1991/92 was in a state comparable to the low fluxes observed in 1977-1980. No significant changes in intensity were detected during the EGRET observations. The total spectrum of PSR0833-45 measured by EGRET can be described by a power law with index -(1.70 +/- 0.02) over the range 30 MeV to 2 GeV. The extrapolation of this spectrum into the 3 to 30 MeV range agrees with the observations by COMPTEL. Above 2 to 4 GeV EGRET detects a strong spectral break. The lightcurves obtained show a familar structure in the phase histogram: two peaks separated by 0.424 +/- 0.002 in phase with considerable emission in the phase interval between the peaks. The first gamma ray peak maximum trails the single radio peak maximum by 10.54 +/- 0.09 ms (= 0.118 +/- 0.001 in phase). The widths of the emission peaks (FWHM) are 2.7 ms for the first peak (0.03 phase) and 4.1 ms for the second peak (0.05 phase). The widths are approximately constant below a GeV, but show a tendency to become narrower at higher energies. On Jul. 20 1991 a glitch of the Vela period was registered in monitor radio observations. No significant differences between the pre- and post-glitch gamma ray lightcurves were found. The statistics available for the Vela observations allow for a division of the lightcurve into eight phase intervals. The emission peak cores (central FWHM) with leading and trailing wings and two interval regions were defined and spectra were derived for all parts of the lightcurve. The energy spectra for the eight phase intervals show significant differences: the first peak (approximately E(exp -1.81 +/- 0.04)) is somewhat softer than the second peak (approximately E(exp -1.71 +/- 0.03)); the wings attached to each peak show softer spectra than the code of the peaks; the interval emission has the hardest spectrum (approximately E(exp -1.52 +/- 0.03)).

    Description: The quasar 3C 273 was detected by the Compton Observatory Satellite (COS-B) in the 1970's. Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) observations of this sky region in Jun. and Oct. 1991 revealed a flux from 3C 273 lower than that measured by COS-B. The flux observed by EGRET in the June period is approximately 0.0000003/sq cm(exp -2) sec(exp -1) for energies greater than 100 MeV. During the Oct. observation it appears to be even lower. For the first observation a preliminary spectrum was derived which was a photon index of 2.4.

The thermographic phosphor technique can be used for making precision, noncontact, cryogenic-temperature measurements in electrically hostile environments, such as high dc electric or magnetic fields. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is interested in using these thermographic phosphors for mapping hot spots on cryogenic tank walls. Europium-doped lanthanum oxysulfide (La2O2S:Eu) and magnesium fluorogermanate doped with manganese (Mg4FGeO6:Mn) are suitable for low-temperature surface thermometry. Several emission lines, excited by a 337-nm ultraviolet laser, provide fluorescence lifetimes having logarithmic dependence with temperature from 4 to above 125 K. A calibration curve for both La2O2S:Eu and Mg4FGeO6:Mn is presented, as well as emission spectra taken at room temperature and 11 K.
