Notes: Abstract Using high-resolution saturation spectroscopy, by means of both double heterostructure and multiple quantum-well AlGaAs diode lasers, we investigate the isotope shifts and the hyperfine structure in the 3s-3p transitions of the triplet and quintet systems of atomic oxygen. From the analysis of the signals from17O we can deduce precise values for the hyperfine structure magnetic dipole constants. A theoretical analysis allows us to bring into evidence core polarization effects in the hyperfine structure. By heterodyning two frequency locked lasers, we perform a direct frequency measurement of the isotope effect on the3 S 1→3 P 1,2,0 transitions. From the comparison with similar accuracy data on the corresponding quintet transitions, an upper bound to the size of the nuclear volume effect is given, and precise values for the specific mass contributions are consequently obtained.

Notes: Abstract The lifetime of the metastable 3D3/2 and 3D5/2 states of Ca+ ions is determined in a r.f. ion trap by laser excitation of this levels and subsequent time delayed probing of the state population by a second laser. In a buffer gas atmosphere of about 10−5−10−6 mbar of He we observe quenching to the ground state and strong finestructure mixing of the two D-states. This mixing allowes only the determination of the combined lifetime. Our result of τ(3D)=1.24(39) s is in good agreement with theoretical calculations.

Description: High-accuracy absorption spectroscopy of CH3OH in the far infrared is discussed. In addition to 22 transitions in the ground state, the frequency of the (n, tau, J, K), (0, 1, 16, 8) to (0, 2, 15, 7) transition in the nu5 excited vibrational level, which is responsible for the laser emission at 119 microns, was measured. The measured frequency is 2,522,782.57(10) MHz at zero pressure, with a pressure shift of 6.1(32) kHz/Pa (0.805/420/ MHz/torr). An accurate remeasurement of the laser emission frequency has also been performed, and the results are in good agreement.
