Notes: The method of normalization is used to develop the J-R curve fracture toughness characterization for polymeric materials. This method can develop J-R curves directly from load vs. displacement records without a need for an on-line crack monitoring system. It was used previously to develop J-R curves for metallic materials and is applied here for the first time to polymer materials. Single edge notched bend specimens of rubber toughened nylon 6/6 and rubber toughened amorphous nylon are used in this study. The J-R curves from the method of normalization are compared with the results obtained from the multiple specimen method of ASTM Standard E813. The results show that the method of normalization gives reasonable J-R curves; both methods show agreement over the early J-R curve region. In addition the JIc values are determined for each method and compared. Based on this work it is suggested that the method of normalization could be used as a general test method to develop J-R curves for polymeric materials.

Notes: Investigations on Regioselectivity of Wittig-Horner and Reformatsky-Reactions on Selected 3,17-Dioxo SteroidsThe Reformatsky synthesis and the Wittig-Horner olefination of 3,17-dioxo steroids like androsta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione (ADD) 1 and androst-4-ene-3,17-dione (AD) 2 is described. There are differences in the regioselective introduction of identical substructures with these two methods resulting from different nucleophilicity and stereoelectronical relations of these two reagents. In Reformatsky synthesis the oxo group in 3-position predominantly reacts, whereas in the Wittig-Horner olefination (in the case of 1) the reaction occurs mainly in the 17-position.The structures of all new compounds has been confirmed by spectroscopical data.

Notes: Summary Particle size distribution analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were carried out on eight used HPLC columns containing either irregular silica based, spherical silica based or spherical polymer based packing material. Particle size distributions of the used irregular silica based columns were at least bimodat at the outlet ends and either biomodal or log-normal at the inlet ends with regular progressions between the two extremes through the column. A new ODS-3 column showed log-normal size distributions from the inlet to the outlet ends. Spherical silica based column particle size distributions showed distinct shoulders on large central distribution peaks in most column sections with various degrees of shoulder erosion. The spherical resin based column showed a broader inlet particle size distribution progressing to a very narrow outlet distribution. SEMs of both irregular and spherical silica based columns revealed a larger number of undersized particles and debris at the outlet than inlet ends which could have resulted from stationary phase degradation, since this was not seen in the new ODS-3 column. While several SEMs of the spherical silica based columns revealed hollow spheres and twins, the spherical resin based column packing showed stress fractures or wrinkle lines resulting from use or dehydration.

Notes: The reaction of 9-bromoanthracene (1) with benzenethiol(ate) in tetraglyme proceeds by a SNAr mechanism. The concurrent formation of anthracene is not due to a competing single-electron-transfer pathway involving either benzenethiol or benzenethiolate anion.

Notes: Four peri-substituted naphthalene-1-diazonium cations all show short attractive interactions between an electron-rich atom of the peri-substituent and the α -N-atom of the diazonium group. These are interpreted as models for incipient nucleophilic attack on a N≡N bond. The diazonium group is a better acceptor of electron density ‘through space’ than the NO2 group, which parallels their relative ‘through-σ-bond’ inductive effects.

Notes: A pair-excitation-multiconfigurational-self-consistent-field (PEMCSCF) study with 10 configurations has been carried out on 3-methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazolin-5-one (3-methyl pseudosydnone) which has normal covalent bonds but is isoelectronic with 3-methyl sydnone for which no single covalent valence bond structure can be drawn. The PEMCSCF results were found to be very similar for the two isoelectronic compounds and an attempt was made to represent the bonding of the sydnone in only two simple molecular-orbital-valence-bond (MOVB) configurations using a Luken-type correlating orbital. A compact minimum basis of Slater-Transform-Preuss functions fitted by six cartesian gaussian orbitals (STP-6G) is used to express the compact representation for chemical comparison to experiment. The molecular geometry was gradient-optimized at the single determinantal level using a 6-31G extended basis set. “Orthonormal Resonance Analysis” is given for the two dominant configurations by noting that the Boys-Reeves configuration interaction algorithm is identical to the Pauling valence bond algorithm except for use of orthogonal molecular orbitals instead of atomic hybrid orbitals. This equivalence permits use of PEMCSCF atomic charges, bond orders, and dipole moments in a slightly modified valence bond interpretation of the unusual bonding of this compound. Although forcing a larger PEMCSCF problem into a minimum basis and only two configurations raises the energy, chemical interpretation is simplified. This comparison between a mesoionic compound and an isoelectric compound with normal bonding offers new understanding of the mesoionic effect.

Notes: The synthesis and characterization of 2-{1-{3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-2-{[2,4,8,10-tetrakis(1,1-dimethylethyl)dibenzo[d,f][1,3,2]dioxaphosphepin-6-yl]oxy}phenyl}ethyl}-4,6-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)phenyl diphenyl phosphite (6) is described. In the 31P-NMR spectrum (1H-decoupled) of 6, an unprecedented eight-bond P,P coupling of J = 72.8 Hz is observed. In the X-ray crystal structure of 6, an intramolecular P-P distance of 3.67 Å is found, which is within the sum of the van-der-Waals radii of the P-atoms. The observed intramolecular P-P distance suggests that a through-space coupling mechanism is operative. The solid-state conformation of 6 is compared to the conformation obtained by semi-empirical MO geometry optimizations (PM3 method). The calculated geometry suggests that the solid-state structure is near a true energy minimum, but that crystal-packing forces decrease the intramolecular P-P distance in the solid state. In the absence of crystal-packing forces, however, the collisional and vibrational energy available in solution may lead to the population of states with a shortened intramolecular P-P distance in 6. The proximity of the P-atoms in 6 is due to restricted conformational freedom resulting from steric congestion within the molecule. The free energy of activation (ΔG* = 10.2 and 10.8 kcal/mol for unequal populations of exchanging conformers) for ring inversion of the dibenzo[d,f][1,3,2]dioxaphosphepin ring in 6 is determined by variable-temperature 31P-NMR spectroscopy. Semi-empirical MO calculation on model compounds suggest that the structure of the transition state for ring inversion has the two aryl rings and O-atoms in a common plane, with the P-atom lying above this plane.

Notes: In flow tube studies of the quenching of O2(b1Σg+), broad band emission of O2(b):M collision complexes was found to appear under the discrete rotational lines of the 0-0 band of the b1Σg+ → a1Δg electric quadrupole transition at higher oxygen pressures and on addition of foreign gases. Bimolecular rate constants for the collision-induced emission processes have been derived from the ratio of the intensities of the discrete lines and the continuum as well as from low-resolution measurements of the relative intensities of the b → a and b → X bands as a function of O2 and added gas pressure. They range from ≈10-21 cm3 s-1 for He to ≈4 × 10-19 cm3 s-1 for PCl3 vapor.

Notes: The feasibility of the titled reactions for the rapid, enantioselective synthesis of cis-tricyclo[9.3.1.03,8]pentadecane precursors to taxusin and taxol has been examined. The catalysts most well suited to inducing the appropriate 1,2-shifts have been identified. To a great extent, the rearrangement products are formed as a direct consequence of appropriate structural features (kinetic phenomenon) and strain minimization (thermodynamic driving force). Complementary MM2 calculations of the global minimum in each series provided indications that were completely in line with the experimental observations. Sophisticated NMR studies and X-ray crystallographic determinations were coordinated to remove any ambiguity of product structure and solid-state conformation.
