    Notes: This is the first of a series of papers on the application of Wertheim's multidensity formalism to study the connectivity and related properties of equilibrium polymerizable particles. We first consider in detail the case in which each monomer has two sites available for covalent bonding. We modify Wertheim's treatment to apply it to the case where the two sites on a monomer are indistinguishable, i.e., to homofunctional units. A study is presented of the connectedness behavior in these systems, including expressions for the weight-average molecular weight and cluster size. The application of these results to specific models is reported in subsequent parts of this series.

    Notes: A prototype low-frequency ac magnetometer with a sensitivity to circular magnetic induction of (9±5)×10−15 T/(square root of)Hz is described. Using this device we confirm Ampère's law at 1.24 K setting an upper limit for possible deviations expressed in terms of the photon mass: mγ≤(8.4±0.8)×10−48 kg.

    Notes: The compound YbBiPt exhibits an extremely large low-temperature C/T (γ∼8 J K−2 mol−1/Yb) which, if due solely to a renormalized effective mass, would make this material the heaviest correlated electron system known to date. In the Kondo model, the very large γ corresponds to a small characteristic energy scale that is expected to be pressure dependent. We have studied the effect of chemical pressure on YbBiPt single crystals by heat-capacity measurements on Y and Lu-doped samples. We have also made preliminary low-temperature measurements under hydrostatic pressure of the heat capacity (300 mK≤T≤2 K, up to 8 kbar) and resistance (30 mK≤T≤1 K, at 16 kbar).

    Notes: Magnetism and superconductivity appear to be intimately connected in the heavy electron (HE) superconductors. For example, it has been conjectured but not proven that the exchange of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are responsible for pairing in HE superconductors. In this paper we review recent results in U1−xThxBe13, where specific heat, lower critical field, and zero-field muon-spin-resonance (μSR) measurements reveal another second-order phase transition (below the superconducting transition) to a state which possesses small-moment magnetic correlations for 0.019≤x≤0.043. We present a new phase diagram for (U,Th)Be13 which indicates that the superconducting and magnetic order parameters are closely coupled. A discussion of the nature of the lower phase is presented, including the consideration of a possible magnetic (time-reversal-violating) superconducting state. When UBe13 is doped with B (UBe12.97B0.03) the Kondo temperature is decreased and the specific heat jump at the superconducting transition temperature is significantly enhanced. However, μSR measurements reveal no magnetic signature in UBe12.97B0.03, unlike the case for Th doping. The correlation between changes in the Kondo temperature and changes in the superconducting properties induced by B doping provide evidence for the importance of magnetic excitations in the superconducting pairing interaction in UBe13.

    Notes: Members of the RBiPt (R=Ce–Lu with the exceptions of Pm and Eu) series have been grown as single crystals. Magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistance have been measured on all members of the series, and specific heat measurements have been performed on representatives. The high temperature resistance uniformly changes from that of a small-gap semiconductor or semimetal seen in NdBiPt to that of a heavy-fermion metal seen in YbBiPt, which shows a linear coefficient of specific heat at low temperatures of 8 J/K2 mole. Further, the lighter rare earth members show an unusually sharp increase in their resistance associated with antiferromagnetic ordering at low temperatures.

    Notes: We report specific heat and μSR measurements on Th (x =0.019) and/or B (y=0.03) substituted UBe13. The specific heat data show that either Th or B substitution reduces the Kondo temperature TK and increases the entropy at the superconducting transition by almost 20%, indicating an enhanced density of states. However, whereas μSR shows clear evidence for magnetic correlations for Th substitutions (0.019〈x〈0.043), no magnetism is observed for B substitutions. The enhanced specific heat jump in the B-substituted material is associated with a change in the superconducting properties as TK is reduced.

    Notes: The time differential perturbed angular correlation technique was applied to study the electric quadrupole coupling of 111Cd in the II-VI semiconductor CdS (20 K≤T≤1000 K). Two kinds of sample preparation were used: implantation and diffusion. Obtained results for the regular lattice sites were independent of the preparation. The measured electric field gradient (EFG) was between 6.7±0.4 MHz and 9.1±0.2 MHz. Data were confirmed by point-charge calculations. Implantation however caused a second EFG (≈78 MHz) that was assigned to a defect due to the preceding irradiation.

    Notes: Dichlorosilane and germane were used to grow silicon-germanium alloys at temperatures as low as 550 °C at atmospheric pressure. The silicon-germanium alloy composition was varied over the range 15%–44%. Films containing high Ge mole fractions were grown at a temperature of 625 °C and below and exhibit smooth surface morphology. Silicon-germanium/silicon multilayers with abrupt heterointerfaces have been achieved. Selective growth of silicon-germanium on oxide patterned silicon wafers was also demonstrated. A significant feature of the selective deposition is the lack of faceting at the oxide sidewall, which has been commonly observed in high-temperature silicon growth.

    Notes: A variable-temperature ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope is described which was specifically designed for the study of Ga surfaces close to the bulk melting point (Tm=29.8 °C). Since the temperature must be controlled with great accuracy the sample stage and the rest of the microscope are in thermal equilibrium. The instrument also incorporates a novel approach to vibration isolation that is based on a lossy acoustic waveguide. Analog electronics form an integral part of the microscope since a dynamic range of 120 dB must be reached. Interconnection techniques are discussed in this context and a circuit of a high-voltage amplifier is shown that provides a voltage swing of ±400 V with less than 1 mVpp noise over a bandwidth of 10 kHz. Results are presented which confirm the design concepts applied to this instrument.

    Notes: One of the generic ways in which chaotic scattering can come about as a system parameter is varied is the so-called "abrupt bifurcation'' in which the scattering is nonchaotic on one side of the bifurcation and is chaotic and hyperbolic on the other side. Previous work demonstrating the abrupt bifurcation [S. Bleher et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 63, 919 (1989); Physica D 46, 87 (1990)] was primarily for the case where the scattering potential had maxima ("hilltops'') which had locally circular isopotential contours. Here we extend these considerations to the more general case of locally elliptically shaped isopotential contours at the hilltops. It turns out that the conditions for the abrupt bifurcation change drastically as soon as even a small amount of noncircularity is included (i.e., the circular case is singular). The illustrative case of scattering from three isolated potential hills is dealt with in detail. One interesting result is a simple geometrical sufficient condition for an abrupt bifurcation in the case of large enough ellipticity of the hill with lowest potential at its hilltop.
