    Notes: Abstract Fast progressive reconstruction (FPR) of images based on discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and Walsh-Hadamard transform (WHT) has been developed by Takikawa [3]. This technique is now extended to the discrete cosine transform (DCT). The quality of reconstructed images during the intermediate stages based on these transforms is analyzed. This comparison is both subjective and objective. The feasibility of the DCT in this FPR scheme is discussed.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Als Fortsetzung früherer Arbeiten aus unserem Institut des einen von uns wird das erste Funkenspektrum des Zinns untersucht, und auf Grund einer sehr sorgfältigen Ausmessung des Spektrums unter den verschiedensten experimentellen Bedingungen konnten viele der leicht anregbaren Linien des Metalls in ein Dublettsystem geordnet werden. Es zeigt sich, daß das Spektrum denen des C II, Si II und Pb II stark ähnelt, und daß es mit den Forderungen der Hundschen Theorie vollkommen übereinstimmt. Als größter Term hat sich ein2P1-Term von 117678,8 cm−1 ergeben, woraus sich das zweite Ionisierungspotential des Zinns zu 14,53 Volt berechnet. Im Verlaufe der Untersuchung wurden verschiedene neue Linien des Zinns beobachtet, deren Wellenlängen mit einem Konkavgitter genau ausgemessen wurden.

    Notes: Summary In a comparative study, the anatomy of neurons immunoreactive with an antiserum against the crustacean β-pigment-dispersing hormone was investigated in the brain of several orthopteroid insects including locusts, crickets, a cockroach, and a phasmid. In all species studied, three groups of neurons with somata in the optic lobes show pigment-dispersing hormone-like immunoreactivity. Additionally, in most species, the tritocerebrum exhibits weak immunoreactive staining originating from ascending fibers, tritocerebral cells, or neurons in the inferior protocerebrum. Two of the three cell groups in the optic lobe have somata at the dorsal and ventral posterior edge of the lamina. These neurons have dense ramifications in the lamina with processes extending into the first optic chiasma and into distal layers of the medulla. Pigment-dispersing hormone-immunoreactive neurons of the third group have somata near the anterior proximal margin of the medulla. These neurons were reconstructed in Schistocerca gregaria, Locusta migratoria, Teleogryllus commodus, Periplaneta americana, and Extatosoma tiaratum. The neurons have wide and divergent arborizations in the medulla, in the lamina, and in several regions of the midbrain, including the superior and inferior lateral protocerebrum and areas between the pedunculi and α-lobes of the mushroom bodies. Species-specific differences were found in this third cell group with regard to the number of immunoreactive cells, midbrain arborizations, and contralateral projections, which are especially prominent in the cockroach and virtually absent in crickets. The unusual branching patterns and the special neurochemical phenotype suggest a particular physiological role of these neurons. Their possible function as circadian pacemakers is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to investigate the effect of heating the Fischer-Tropsch catalyst 100 Fe/5 Cu/4.2 K/24 SiO2 in two different atmospheres while ramping the temperature of the catalyst from room temperature to 280 °C in 5.5 h prior to pretreatment of the catalyst. Preheating in H2/CO=0.7 gave rise to an iron (Fe2+) silicate, while preheating in helium resulted in the formation of ε′-carbide Fe2.2C. Iron oxides and χ-carbide Fe5C2 were also formed in both preheat treatments.

    Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectroscopy studies of precipitated Fischer-Tropsch (FT) iron catalysts, viz. 100 Fe/5 Cu/4.2 K/x SiO2, wherex=0,8, 16, 24, 25, 40, or 100, have shown that reduction of the oxide precursor in CO gives rise to χ-carbide Fe5C2 whose amount decreases with an increase of SiO2 content. The χ-carbide is converted into magnetite Fe3O4 while catalyzing the FT synthesis reaction. A correlation between FT activity and the content of χ-carbide in the catalysts was found, which indicated that χ-carbide is active for FT synthesis reaction.

    Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectroscopy studies of iron catalysts from a Fischer-Tropsch (FT) Pilot Plant run at different time-on-stream periods were carried out. Magnetite Fe3O4 was found to be active for the water-gas-shift (WGS) reaction which accompanies the FT synthesis reaction over Fe-based catalysts. A correlation between the ratio of the occupancy of octahedral sites to the tetrahedral sites in magnetite to the WGS activity was found. Cation-deficient magnetite gave higher WGS activity as compared to the stoichiometric phase.
