    Notes: Abstract The influence of cisplatin, an anticancer agent, on DNA synthesis and cell cycle progression of a cisplatin-resistant cell line was investigated. Cell cycle analysis using flow cytometry showed that cytotoxic concentrations of cisplatin caused a transient inhibition of parental HeLa cells at S phase, followed by accumulation at G2 phase. In contrast, the resistant cells progressed through the cell cycle without being affected by the same treatment. However, cell cycle distributions were the same in the resistant and the parental cells at IC50, the drug concentration inhibiting cell growth by 50%. Studies using a [3H]thymidine incorporation technique also demonstrated a transient inhibition of DNA synthesis in HeLa cells by cisplatin; such inhibition was greatly reduced in the resistant cells. These data argue for the hypothesis that the inhibition of DNA synthesis is important in determining cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity. In addition, the accumulation of cells at G0/G1 by serum starvation was not effective in the resistant cells compared to the parental cells, suggesting that the control of cell cycle exiting is also altered in the resistant cells. Taken together, these results support the notion that alterations in cell cycle control, in particular G2 arrest, are important in determining the sensitivity or resistance of mammalian cells to cisplatin and may have a role in clinical protocols.

    Notes: Summary Nitrification was measured in five different soils (slate alluvial soil, sandstone shale alluvial soil, sandstone shale and slate alluvial soil, red soil, and Taiwan clay). In these soils different lag periods were recorded before the onset of nitrification. Nitrifying activity was highest in sandstone shale alluvial soil and the lowest in acidic red soil. A part from those in the red soil, the numbers of nitrifying bacteria detected were all higher than numbers reported in temperate soils. However, there were no clear relationships between the numbers of nitrifying bacteria and the rate of nitrification in these soils. When soil cores were incubated for 3 weeks, no NO inf2 sup- or NO inf3 sup- was defected in the slate alluvial soil. This was ascribed to denitrification.

    Notes: Abstract The release of apical dominance by the physical destruction in situ of the apical meristem and associated leaf primordia (decapitation) promoted the growth of tillers in non-herbicide-treated wild oat plants, as indicated by increased tiller lengths and fresh weights. At 96 h after [14C] herbicide treatment following decapitation, the absorption of [14C]imazamethabenz and total translocation of radioactivity were respectively increased by 28% and 49%. By 96 h after [14C]imazamethabenz application, the radioactivity detected in the roots of decapitated plants was 45% higher than that in the roots of nondecapitated plants while the radioactivity in tillers of decapitated plants was 2.6-fold that in tillers of intact plants. Decapitation together with foliar spraying of imazamethabenz at 200 g ha−1 further reduced tiller fresh weight, greatly decreased the total tiller number, and thereafter significantly increased overall phytotoxicity by 32% as measured by total shoot fresh weight. The results of this study support the hypothesis that main shoot apical dominance limits translocation of applied imazamethabenz to lateral shoots, rendering tillers less susceptible to growth inhibition by the herbicide.

    Notes: Abstract The influences of nutrient supply and plant growth regulators on the phytotoxicity of imazamethabenz in wild oat (Avena fatua L.) were evaluated in the greenhouse. Wild oat plants supplied with half-strength rather than one-eighth-strength Hoagland solution were more susceptible to imazamethabenz, showing greater growth reduction in main shoot and tillers. The improved herbicide efficacy at higher nutrient levels appeared related to increased herbicide interception by the greater leaf surface available. Leaves developing at either nutrient level did not differ significantly in epicuticular wax, so differential absorption appeared unlikely. Wild oat plants supplemented with nutrient, switching from low to high levels at the time of herbicide application, were as susceptible to imazamethabenz or even more so than plants growing with a constant high level of nutrition. The wild oat pure-line Montana 73, a strongly tillering line, was more susceptible to imazamethabenz than the limited-tillering line, Crop Science 40. Both 2,4-D and GA3 reduced imazamethabenz-induced tillering. Imazamethabenz efficacy was increased by GA3 but not by 2,4-D. These results support the hypothesis that lowering apical dominance of wild oat increases imazamethabenz activity in tillers, and that increased tillering following sublethal doses of imazamethabenz treatment is associated with the release of apical dominance.

    Notes: Abstract CeO2/BaF2 was used as the catalyst for the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM). At 800°C and CH4∶O2=2.7∶1,CH4 conversion of 34% with C2 hydrocarbon selectivity of 54.3% was obtained. XRD measurement showed that partial anion (O2−,F−) and/or cation (Ce4+,Ba2+) exchange between CeO2 and BaF2 lattices occurred. ESR study showed that O− species existed on degassed catalyst. XPS study revealed that, when BaF2 was added to CeO2, the binding energy of Be 3d5/2 was 2.2 eV lower than that in CeO2, and the “electron-enriched lattice oxygen” species was detected. XPS, ESR and Raman study showed that, under O2 adsorbing conditions, O 2 2− and O − 2 species were detected on CeO2/BaF2.

    Notes: Abstract This paper is using an experimental method to study the creep behavior of solid-filled silicone-rubber composites (GFSC). The specimens made of silcone-rubber as the matrix and 0–40% volume fraction (Vf) of glassbeads, have been through uniazial tensile tests and constant-loading creep tests. The results show that the material behavior is ovviously nonlinear and the Eyring's reaction rate principle is suitable to describe the viscoelastic behavior of this rubber composite. Thus, to solve the creep problems of rubber composites, the Boltzmann's superposition technique can not be applied. Although Findley et. al (1976), have proposed the mutiple integrals form, but solving the multiple integrals form is quite complicated and does not be guarantee convergence. We have employed SoChen's form of the nonlinear stress-strain relationship of rubber elasticity. This can avoid the above mentioned problems and the analytic solution is obtained. The resulting solution is in very good agreement with the experimental results.

    Notes: Abstract Convective mass transfer phenomena become significant in sub-micrometre liquid phase epitaxial layer growth. An aqueous solution containing 0.01m K3Fe(CN)6+0.01m K4Fe(CN)6+1.0m KOH in a Plexiglass vessel was used to simulate the fluid motion and mass transfer condition in liquid phase epitaxy. The mass transfer phenomena between the liquid phase epitaxial system and electrochemical system at mass transfer limiting condition are equivalent. This was theoretically and experimentally verified. The influence of growth conditions, such as growth time (40 ms≤t≤300 s), solution depth (0.625 cm≤H≤1.25 cm), and solution kinematic viscosity (0.0104 cm2s−1≤v≤0.0161 cm2s−1), on the growth rate of the epi-layer were simulated by the electrochemical method. The dependence of simulated epi-layer thickness,L', on growth time,t, can be expressed asL'=αt β. Whent≤0.1 s, the convective mass transfer process predominates and β=0.9±0.2. Whent〉0.1 s, the mass transfer rate is controlled by diffusion and β=0.5±0.05.
