Notes: Abstract We have studied the time-dependent behaviour of the Hei 10830 Å line. These studies show that (i) the fluctuations of the line width are uncorrelated with the equivalent-width fluctuations and (ii) the autocorrelation curves for the equivalent-width fluctuations are broader than those for line-width fluctuations. These results could be interpreted as the signatures of the eruption of density inhomogeneities, like spicules, into the altitudes of formation of the Hei 10830 Å line.

Notes: Summary Male sterility has been recently discovered in Californian populations of rose clover (Trifolium hirtum). This study describes the frequency distribution of male sterility in Turkish and Californian populations, and compares fitness components of hermaphrodites and females. As male-steriles were found in Turkey, it is likely that they were introduced to California during the 1940's with the original material derived from Turkey. The spread of male-sterile genotypes in California has given rise to an asymmetrical frequency distribution of male sterility with positive skewness. The frequency of females has not exceeded fifty percent and it appears to be temporally stable in most of the Californian populations. The hypothesis that female frequencies and fitness differences between phenotypes are correlated was tested by comparing sex phenotypes in seven populations with contrasting levels of male sterility. The analysis of those populations showed no evidence for such a correlation as no significant differences were found between sex phenotypes for fecundity and seed germination. The hypothesis that females are maintained due to fitness differences in the progeny of hermaphrodites and females was experimentally tested in the population with maximum frequency of male-steriles. The results showed no significant differences in the demographic performance of the progenies of hermaphrodites and females. The present results are discussed in terms of the possible mechanism of maintenance of gynodioecy in rose clover.

Notes: Summary A multilocus procedure was used to estimate outcrossing rates in ten roadside populations of Trifolium hirtum in California. Three groups of populations were studied: cultivars, hermaphroditic, and gynodioecious (sexually dimorphic) populations. The multilocus outcrossing rate (tm) varied from 0.05 to 0.43 among populations. Population level tm estimates were significantly correlated with the observed heterozygosity in gynodioecious populations but not in hermaphroditic populations. The outcrossing rate of hermaphrodites and females was estimated in three gynodioecious populations; the estimates of tm varied from 0.09 to 0.23 for hermaphrodites and from 0.73 to 0.80 for females. The distribution of outcrossing rates in gynodioecious populations is bimodal. Our results indicate that for the levels of selfing observed among hermaphrodites, inbreeding depression is likely to be a major factor in the maintenance of females in gynodioecious populations.

Notes: Summary Morpholine and its amine-type thermal degradation products present in boiler feed water and steam condensate were derivatised with N-succinimidyl-p-nitrophenylacetate. These pre-column derivatives were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection at 280 nm. The analytical column was Supelco-sil-ODS with an isocratic mobile phase. Morpholine and its breakdown products were monitored in the range 0.01–10 μg ml−1 with a relative standard deviation of 0.4–3.0%. Chromatographic analysis of boiler feed water and steam condensate samples collected from a boiler servicing a petroleum refinery is described.

Notes: Abstract There exists a great amount of genetic diversity and of free as well as potential variability among and within the familial lines. Consequently, natural selection acting through heterozygote advantage and differential competing ability has often sufficient plasticity in the genetic composition to mould into better adaptive types. Whether fitness and agronomic productivity of a bulk population are improved simultaneously would depend upon the relationship between the two genetic systems governing them. In case of a linear correlation such as one observed in the barley material studied, the bulk method seems to be quite promising, particularly in view of the great economy in cost and labour involved in the entire program. Another important feature is, at least on theoretical grounds, the greater stability in the performance of a mixed population owing to a wider adaptive base against different environments, or such adverse factors as a coevolving group of some pathogenic races. However, it appears that progress under natural selection is perhaps too slow and therefore, artificial selection might also be resorted to at suitable stages in the bulk program on the basis of usual testing and evaluating procedures. Isolation of superior familial lines by the F10 or F15 generation followed by their separate bulk propagation might prove an efficient scheme.

Notes: Abstract in the pedigree of a group of several intervarietal crosses in barley, individual plant progenies from F4 F5 and F6 generations were studied along with three of their parents for comparing the within-family variances (σ2 w) in them using it as a measure of progress towards homozygosity. For plant height the value of σw 2 in F6 was not significantly higher than the one in parents whereas for spike length there was observed a significant excess of within-family variability in F6 over the parents. This excess was attributed to a differential survival of heterozygous progenies under selection despite some selection pressure against the heterozygosity in marked chromosome segments. The adaptive role of heterozygote advantage in the populations of such predominantly self-fertilized species has been briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract The inheritance of male sterility was studied using a set of intra and interpopulation crosses from Californian populations of rose clover (Trifolium hirtum All.). The F2 gave higher frequencies of male steriles in interpopulation crosses than in intrapopulation crosses. Several F2 families gave ratios that were compatible with models of two and three complementary genes. However, the frequency distribution of male sterility among F3 families rejected such models. Given that single and two gene models were rejected, we interpret the results using a cytoplasmic-nuclear model with more than two restorer loci which is at least consistent with the observed results.

Notes: Summary Hydrazine, an oxygen scavenger in boiler water, was derivatised to the corresponding acetone azine and determined at the ng ml−1 level by gas chromatography. Morpholine, a corrosion inhibitor used in steam boilers, was estimated either directly (if 〉2.0 μg ml−1) or by quantitative preconcentration (0.1 ng – 2.0 μg ml−1). To obtain symmetrical peaks for these amines, the column packing was coated with KOH. Use of a nitrogen-specific detector improved accuracy of estimation of hydrazine and morpholine, giving a RSD of 1.9–3.6%. Chromatographic analysis of these amines in boiler feed water and steam condensate samples collected from boilers servicing a petroleum refinery is described. Environmental safety regulations calls for monitoring of hydrazine and the methods developed can easily be adapted for this purpose.

Notes: Abstract The equivalent width, line depth, line width, and Doppler shift of the He i 10830 Å line were extracted from two time series of spectra. Scatter plots of time-averaged line depth, line width, and Doppler shifts, as well as the root mean square temporal fluctuation of these quantities against the time-averaged equivalent width at a few hundred spatial locations were obtained. The statistical behaviour of these line parameters and their fluctuations was used to infer plausible reasons for the fluctuations. Examination of these results showed that the line parameter fluctuations could be caused by fluctuations in the coronal UV radiation (which could drive the spicules) or by the appearance of density inhomogeneities such as spicules within the line forming domain. In either case, the data can be interpreted as representing the initial phases of spicules.
