Notes: Summary Equilibria between 2-hydroxy naphthaldehyde derivatives (semicarbazone and thiosemicarbazone) and proton or some bivalent metal ions have been investigated potentiometrically at a constant ionic strength and different compositions of the mixed solvent (dioxane: water). The method of Bjerrum and Calvin [1, 2], as modified by Irving and Rossotti [3], has been used to determine the values ofn andpL. The stability constants have been calculated following Sullivan et al. [4] to give β n values. The values ofS min=χ2 have also been calculated. The order of stability constants was found to be found to be UO 2 2+ 〉 Cu2+ 〉 Ni2+ 〉 Co2+ 〉 Zn2+ 〉 Pb2+ 〉 Cd2+ 〉 Mn2+ 〉 Mg2+. The effect of varying the dielectric constant of the medium on the stability constants of the complexes has also been investigated at an ionic strength of 0.100M NaClO4 and a temperature of 20±0.5°C.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wurden Chrom(III)-komplexe des Typs Cr(A)(A′)2, Cr(A)2(A′) und Cr(A)3 (wobei A entweder Piperidyldithiocarbamat oder Morpholyldithiocarbamat und A′ Glycin, Oxin oder Acetylaceton ist) hergestellt.
Notes: Abstract Chromium(III) complexes of the type Cr(A)(A′)2, Cr(A)2(A′) and Cr(A)3 have been prepared (whereA is either piperidyldithiocarbamate or morpholyldithiocarbamate andA′ is glycine or oxine or acetylacetone moiety). The mixed ligand complexes have been charac terized by elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility measurements and thermal studies. The complexes show magnetic moment in the range of 3.5–4.3 B.M. which corresponds to three unpaired electrons. TG studies have also been carried out, in order to study the mode of decomposition of the complexes and to evaluate various kinetic parameters.

Notes: Summary Races of a C3 plant species, Arabidopsis thaliana, were screened for time of survival when enclosed in an air-tight chamber with a C4 plant species (Zea mays L.). This has been suggested as a method of detecting and selecting for increased photosynthetic efficiency among C3 genotypes. The C4 plant should, in such conditions, reduce the atmospheric CO2 concentration below the compensation point of the C3 plant, resulting in its eventual death. Significant differences were found among the A. thaliana races for survival time; some races survived only one week in competition with corn while others survived more than two weeks. Two races, chosen for contrasting survival in closed chambers, were hybridized and compared to their F2 progeny for survival time. Substantial genetic segregation occurred among the F2, and a number of transgressive segregates having survival times superior of both parents were identified. Also significant heterosis was observed in the F2 population.

Notes: The technologically important studies on rubber friction and wear give strong support to rubber friction being a viscoelastic phenomenon. However, the basic concepts and conclusions derived from such studies appear to have general validity. Fiber-to-fiber friction studies are carried out on a number of polymeric flaments with a view to establishing the relationships between fundamental mechanical properties such as modulus, tan δ, and the coefficient of friction. The relationship between these three quantities is expressed by an equation. The results show that with these fibers adhesive contribution to friction is negligible and that temperature and humidity variations in end uses have a much more important effect in frictional properties than changes in draw ratio, heat setting, and so on.

Notes: Summary Biochemical studies on the two transaminases GOT and GPT of swine kidney worm Stephanurus dentatus have been made. GOT has been found much more active than GPT. Enzyme activities are based on the formation of oxaloacetate (GOT) or pyruvate (GPT) from aspartic acid and alanine respectively with oxoglutarate. A linear relationship is observed between the enzyme concentration and activity. GOT shows a maximum activity at pH 8.0 and Michaelis constant 9×10−3 M for male and 2.9×10−3 M for female. GPT has an optimum pH of 7.5 and a Michaelis constant 19×10−3 M for male and 8×10−3 M for female. The optimum temperature for both GOT and GPT was 60° C.

Notes: Summary Biochemical and histochemical studies have been made on non-specific acid and alkaline phosphomonoesterases of S. dentatus. The two forms of acid phosphomonoesterases have been found active at pH 4.0 and 6.0. The pH optima for the two forms of alkaline phosphomonoesterases lie at 8.0 and 10.0. Studies on the distribution of acid and alkaline phosphomonoesterases in various tissues have revealed an abundance of acid phosphomonoesterase in various parts of the alimentary canal and various organs of the reproductive system. The excretory ducts show alkaline phosphomonoesterase activity only.

Notes: Abstract Analyses of mechanical and diffusive properties of fibres are described indicating strong lateral interactions between the microfibrils. These results show that uniaxially oriented polymers must be analysed in terms of a model where the crystallites are imbedded in an “amorphous” matrix. The equations are derived for modulus, strength and coefficient of diffusion in terms of crystallite dimensions, and the results compared with the experimental data. These results contradict the predictions of the microfibrils model where the properties are independent of the crystallite dimensions but depend solely on the degree of crystallinity.
