    Notes: The operation of a twin screw extruder processing a powder or granular solid is reviewed. The operating variables of screw speed and barrel temperature profile interact with a number of design parameters -  screw design, die geometry, feed zone geometry and with the material properties, in determining machine performance. The factors that determine output and pressure development are specified in a sequence of block diagrams. The dynamic response of an operating machine to disturbances in the steady state conditions is explained in the light of the established relationships and interpreted in conventional control theory terms. Attention is drawn to the importance of mixing in the chambers formed by the screw channels and of the residence time distribution in determining the quality of the final product.

    Description: The murine white spotting locus (W) is allelic with the proto-oncogene c-kit, which encodes a transmembrane tyrosine protein kinase receptor for an unknown ligand. Mutations at the W locus affect various aspects of hematopoiesis and the proliferation and migration of primordial germ cells and melanoblasts during development to varying degrees of severity. The W42 mutation has a particularly severe effect in both the homozygous and the heterozygous states. The molecular basis of the W42 mutation was determined. The c-kit protein products in homozygous mutant mast cells were expressed normally but displayed a defective tyrosine kinase activity in vitro. Nucleotide sequence analysis of mutant complementary DNAs revealed a missense mutation that replaces aspartic acid with asparagine at position 790 in the c-kit protein product. Aspartic acid-790 is a conserved residue in all protein kinases.     Description: Glutamate-operated ion channels (GluR channels) of the L-alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA)-kainate subtype are found in both neurons and glial cells of the central nervous system. These channels are assembled from the GluR-A, -B, -C, and -D subunits; channels containing a GluR-B subunit show an outwardly rectifying current-voltage relation and low calcium permeability, whereas channels lacking the GluR-B subunit are characterized by a doubly rectifying current-voltage relation and high calcium permeability. Most cell types in the central nervous system coexpress several subunits, including GluR-B. However, Bergmann glia in rat cerebellum do not express GluR-B subunit genes. In a subset of cultured cerebellar glial cells, likely derived from Bergmann glial cells. GluR channels exhibit doubly rectifying current-voltage relations and high calcium permeability, whereas GluR channels of cerebellar neurons have low calcium permeability.     Notes: Extrusion measurements have been carried out on blends of nylon 6 and a liquid-crystalline copolyesteramide (LCP). The flow curves at low temperature show a behavior similar to that of pure LCP with a rapid rise of the viscosity at low shear rates. At high shear rates the viscosity is lower than that for each of the two components. This minimum has been attributed to the lack of interactions between the two phases and to the formation of fibrils of the LCP phase. The SEM analysis shows, indeed, that fibrils of the LCP phase are produced in the convergent flow at the inlet of the capillary at high shear rates. These fibrils are lost during the flow in the long capillary.

    Notes: We have studied the impact strength, by Charpy and Izod tests, of blends of polyamide 6 with different rubbers, 10 wt% of each, or rubbers and glass fibers (8.5 wt% and 15 wt% respectively). The rubbers are from three different families: (i) a nonreactive cross-linked terpolymer, methyl methacrylate/butadiene/styrene (17/64.5/18.5); (ii) two block copolymers compatible with the matrix, poly(tetramethylene glycol)/polamide 12 (70/30 or 34/66); and (iii) two polymers containing reactive functionality, a terpolymer ethylene/ethyl acrylate/maleic anhydride (68/30.5/1.5) and a copolymer ethylene/acrylic acid (90/10). The classification of additives in regard to improved impact depends on the procedure used for the impact strength measurement, particularly on whether the samples are notched or unnotched. The results are discussed in relation to the dimensions and the adhesion of the rubber particles. The level of adhesion has been estimated from observations in scanning electron microscopy of cavities due to pullout nodules and of nonextracted rubber after treatment in boiling xylene. Strong variations in the morphologies are found, depending on the chemical nature of the rubber. The crystalline state of the polyamide in the blends has also been evaluated from differential scanning calorimetry.

    Notes: Commercial polysulfone/polycarbonate (PSU/PC) polymer blends were reprocessed up to five times to determine the influence that reprocessing has on their structure and physical properties. All the high strain properties, mainly ductility, significantly decreased under harsh processing conditions, such as five cycles at 320°C. The results of reprocessing the blends at 320°C have been compared with results at a lower temperature and also with those of the separate components with the aim of clarifying the origin of the degradation. These results plus Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic mechanical analysis, and melt flow index measurements (MFI) indicate that the presence of the two polymers together clearly decreases the resistance to degradation of each component. Moreover, degradation under the stated conditions is mainly thermal and does not change the chemical nature of the blends. However, a clear decrease in molecular weight was observed both by viscosimetry and MFI measurements as was a shift to higher temperatures of the low temperature secondary transition of both PC and PSU. Both molecular weight and secondary transition changes usually deteriorate mechanical properties but not in the degree observed here. This probably means that the fine and difficult-to-observe structure of the blend has also changed.

    Notes: A new finite element model named Corrected Slice Method (CSM) has been developed to cope with three-dimensional vacuum cooling calibrator problems. Such problems appear whenever the cooling channel lay-out comprises transverse channels in the calibrator. The CSM is an extension of the 2D approach (8), which takes into account the axial heat fluxes within the calibrator. The proposed model was validated by comparing the numerical results obtained on a test problem with a rigorous finite element approach. Moreover, a real complex profile-calibrator system was simulated in order to illustrate the full performance of the porposed method.

    Notes: Compounds based on poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), and containing CaCO3 filler and trifunctional acrylic crosslinking agent have been crosslinked by exposure to γ-rays at dosages to 70 kGy. The crosslinking agent was found to be essential for crosslinking to proceed, only minor sensitivity to the irradiation having been found in compounds omitting the chemical. The presence of filler somewhat inhibits crosslink effectiveness, as measured by solvent uptake data. Elastic moduli and elongations at rupture respond to crosslinking processes, the latter being particularly sensitive to the effects of irradiation. The presence of filler was found to raise modulus, while ductilities of compounds were greater than expected, owing to adhesion at polymer/filler interfaces. Favorable acid/base interaction forces appear responsible for the effect. The reduced sensitivity of filled PVC compounds to γ-ray exposure is attributed to polymer immobilization, the consequence of strong interfacial bonding with the filler.

    Notes: Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a brittle material which can be reinforced by the incorporation of acrylic particles, which do not spoil the transparency but which considerably increase the toughness of the material. In that study, we have varied the particle size and the outer layer for anchoring with the matrix. The proportion of reinforcing material is kept constant and the particles have an elastomeric core structure and a hard outer layer of PMMA. Monitoring of the two parameters, the critical stress intensity factor KIC and the critical energy release rate GIC, which are given by the fracture mechanics under static and dynamic (impact) loading, has made it possible to establish an optimum size of the reinforcement of the order of 200 to 250 nanometers. This optimum size can be explained as being the best compromise between the initiation of the damage and the control of its propagation, and that makes it possible to avoid a premature catastrophic failure. It also appears that a higher degree of grafting and a higher molecular mass of the hard layer result in an improved toughness.

    Notes: Rubber toughened poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is reinforced efficiently by particles of a size of the order of 200 to 250 nm in the case of acrylic particles of core-shell structure. In this study we have attempted to detect a possible synergy effect related to the presence of a twin population of particle sizes, as has already been observed, for example in high impact polystyrene. Two pairs of particle sizes were studied: (82,203) and (130,520) nm. The determination of the fracture mechanics parameters KIC and GIC under static and dynamic loading has enabled us to demonstrate a synergy effect in the case of the critical energy release rate GIC at a proportion of 50/50. Furthermore, this effect is verified in the case of the two pairs of particle sizes and in the case of the two speeds of loading. Nevertheless, this effect remains smaller than those observed in the case of materials which deform by crazing (HIPS, ABS). The rubber toughened PMMA deforms by shear bands and this mode of deformation seems to be less adapted to promote a synergy effect due to a twin distribution of particle sizes.
