Notes: Abstract Extracts of the sex pheromone glands of femaleCydia caryana were evaluated by electroantennography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. These studies suggested the following compounds were potential sex pheromone components: (Z)-8- and/or (E)-9-dodecenyl acetate (50 pg/female), dodecyl acetate (40 pg/female), and (E, E)-8,10-dodecadienyl acetate (25 pg/female). In field tests only the diene produced trap catch, and when the other components were added to the diene, trap catch was not increased. When the diene was formulated in red natural rubber septa, only transient and low catches were obtained, but when gray halobutyl isoprene elastomeric septa were used, high and consistent catches were obtained for eight weeks. Catches depended on the ratio of (E, E)-8,10 to (E, Z)-8,10 isomers. High catches were obtained for anEE toEZ ratio of 100 ∶ 0.6, and insignificant catches were obtained when the ratio was 100 ∶ 3. Equivalent catches were obtained for dosages of 50, 100, and 200 μg/septum.

Notes: Bromodifluoroacetaldehyde (5) was prepared from methyl bromodifluoroacetate (4) by reduction with lithium aluminium hydride. 4 was in turn prepared by bromination of chlorotrifluoroethylene (1) and treatment of the resulting 1,2-dibromo-1-chlorotrifluoroethane (2) with fuming H2SO4 and HgO. 5, properly purified, could be polymerized with anionic and cationic initiators to poly[oxy-2-(bromodifluoro)ethylidene] (12). Certain initiators produce partially or entirely amorphous soluble 12 of relatively low molecular weight. Most polymers, however, are insoluble, crystalline, and presumably isotactic. Thermal vacuum degradation of the polymers 12 gave monomer 5 in essentially quantitative yield. The thermal stability of polymers can significantly be improved by endcapping or treating with agents which replace unstable end groups. The ceiling temperature of the polymerization of 5 was determined to be +48°C. 5 was copolymerized with trichloroacetaldehyde with cationic or anionic initiators to copolymers containing predominantly units of 5. 5 could also be copolymerized with phenyl isocyanate to a polymer containing oxycarbamido linkages.

Notes: The quasi-static compaction behavior of a number of single- and double-base ball propellants has been investigated to determine the effect of nitroglycerin (NG) content. Simultaneous measurements were obtained of axial applied and transmitted forces, circumferential strain, and porous bed displacement, resulting in the calculation of axial average solid stress and radial stress as a function of porous bed consolidation. Five Olin ball propellants designated as WC140, TS3660, TS3659, Winchester #231, and TS3661 in order of increasing NG content, were compacted. Their NG concentrations ranged from 0 to ∼35 wt%. The most significant effects of increased NG content were to decrease the various axial and radial stress levels present at constant degree of bed consolidation and to increase the coefficient of kinetic friction at the porous bed/mold wall interface. Microscopic examination of recovered samples that had been compacted revealed that extensive plastic deformation occurred in the absence of particle fracture.
