Notes: Noncrystalline hydrocarbon films were deposited from methane plasmas in an electron-cyclotron-resonance plasma reactor. The films were characterized by infrared spectroscopy and high-energy ion-beam analysis. Film properties were investigated as a function of the energy of ions impinging on the surface of the growing film. The ion energy was varied by applying a dc bias to the sample in the range from 30 to 200 eV. The ion energy was measured with a retarding field analyzer under identical experimental conditions. An abrupt change was found in the sp3/sp2 ratio in the energy interval from 80 to 120 eV. Other film properties such as the refractive index, density, and hydrogen-to-carbon ratio exhibit a more or less monotonic dependence on the ion energy. The results are compared with published data on hydrocarbon films. An analytical model was developed to describe the energy dependence of the hydrogen fraction in the films. It is based on the assumption that displacement of hydrogen atoms is the dominating mechanism that controls the hydrogen fraction in hydrocarbon films. The results are also discussed on the basis of the fully constrained network model.

Notes: Although measurement of spin-lattice relation time (T1) can provide valuable information about atomic motion in solids, T1 data for quadrupolar nuclei are often difficult to interpret because the relevant physical interactions cannot be expressed analytically. In order to address this problem, we have developed an extension to the dynamic Monte Carlo method for simulating spin-lattice relaxation of quadrupolar nuclei in solids. In this paper we develop the simulation method generally, and then apply the method to understanding published T1 measurements of oxygen-17 in yttria-doped ceria. We show that even for simple geometries of motion, multiple time scales for electric field gradient fluctuations are possible, resulting in complex relaxation behavior including multiple T1 minima. The method can be used to explain and deconvolute data in which these effects are present. In the case of yttria-doped ceria, we show that two experimentally observed T1 minima result from simultaneous movement of oxygen vacancies and oxygen ions. We discuss the meaning of the kinetic parameters extracted from the data, and show evidence for the relevance of these parameters to bulk vacancy diffusion kinetics.

Notes: Laser-induced fluorescence was applied at the B–X transition of the CH radical to measure absolute densities of the CH radicals in an electron cyclotron resonance methane plasma. The absolute experimental uncertainty is only about 30% due to a new calibration procedure. The CH density correlates well with optical emission from the CH A–X and B–X transitions over a wide pressure range. Experimental results are in satisfactory agreement with predictions from a model based on rate equations for the electron-induced dissociation and ionization of the parent methane gas. This model also includes the interaction of the plasma species with the surrounding walls and the particle transport due to pumping.

Notes: We compare reported compositions of a-C:H films in a ternary phase diagram. It is assumed that the films comprised three phases: sp3 hybridized carbon, sp2 hybridized carbon and hydrogen. The data are found to split into two well-separated groups. This separation depends on the method used to measure the sp3/sp2 ratio. We conclude from the comparison of NMR and infrared data that infrared analysis does not provide a quantitative measure of the sp3/sp2 ratio.

Notes: This report presents an application of quantitative decision-analytic techniques to consider an opportunity for capital investment in a new product.Decision analysis is a well-established technique for evaluating major decisions in which substantial resources and time are available for the analysis and the problem is definitely formulated at the outset. This case study, however, illustrates how decision-analytic techniques can be used on-line to improve decision making in a situation in which time and resources are limited, and the manager's perception of the problem changes in response to feedback from the analysis. The basic decision problem was whether or not the AIL division of Cutler-Hammer, Incorporated should purchase a six-month option on a flight-safety system patent. The president of AIL had only a few weeks in which to make a decision. The analytic approach focused on a probabilistic discounted earnings model. This model was refined over a two-week period through a sequence of iterations which incorporated the results of both direct and indirect assessments of probabilities and values. The analysis affected the company's decision process by providing a vehicle for structuring the ongoing communication between AIL's president and his advisors, and by focusing their attention on the most important issues. In the end, the analysis facilitated a unanimous decision from the decision-making group not to purchase the option, but to consider participating in the license as a subcontractor at a later date. This strategy had not been considered at the outset.

Notes: [Auszug] The nuclear source in NGC 7319 has a flux density of 28±5xlO~29 W m-2 Hz-1. The distance to this galaxy is presently a point of dispute; although the redshift of the galaxy2 (6657 km s^1) indicates a distance of 133 Mpc (for //=50 km s-1 Mpc"1), it has been suggested3 that the redshift is ...

Notes: Abstract The band-structure of Pd(110) was studied by k-resolved inverse photoemission (IPE). The data are interpreted on the basis of a relativistic band-structure calculation. Apart from direct bulk band transitions, weak surface umklapp and surface emission features are observed. Four different surface state bands could be detected in the gaps at X and Y. An anomalous temperature behaviour is found for a transition into the d-bands close to the Fermi level. Finally, structures resulting from LEED reflections are identified in the IPE spectra and their characteristics are discussed.

Notes: Abstract This study was conducted on Gugera Branch of Lower Chenab Canal, Punjab, Pakistan. Sample distributaries off taking from Gugera Branch were selected for the study. The existing conditions of water distribution among the distributaries were studied. Field data were collected during the whole of 1988. Field observations suggested that the variability at the head of distributaries is much greater than the variability in the Gugera Branch under existing operational practices. The distribution of water among the distributaries is rarely in accordance with design criteria. Some channels get priority over other channels. The annual closure period varied from 17 to 41 days for different channels. The discharge at the head of distributaries remained lower than the standard operational range for 69 to 183 days in a year. The data suggested that a regulating gate at the head of the distributary can reduce discharge variation up to 2.4 times compared with a ‘Karrees System’ (wooden stop logs used for water regulation). The data indicated that the adjustments in the head gate of a distributary on daily basis can substantially improve discharge conditions at the head of distributary. Rotational schedules are not being followed as per design and need to be improved. Most of the existing head discharge relationships of discharge measuring structures are not reliable. A frequent calibration of these structures is recommended.
