Notes: Summary An efrotomycin fermentation was characterized through physical, chemical and biochemical studies. Growth of the actinomycete,Nocardia lactamdurans occurred during the first 50 h of the fermentation cycle at the expense of glucose, protein, and triglycerides. The initiation of efrotomycin biosynthesis was observed when glucose dropped to a low concentration. Upon glucose depletion, cell growth ceased and a switch in the respiratory quotient occurred. Efrotomycin biosynthesis was supported by the utilization of soybean oil and starch. Analysis of triglyceride metabolism showed that no diglycerides or monoglycerides accumulated during the fermentation. The activity of extracellular enzymes (lipase, protease, and amylase) increase during the cell growth phase and decreased significantly after 150 h. The concentrations of DNA, tetrahydro-vitamin K2 (a membrane component), and free amino acids in the supernatant increased dramatically late in the fermentation cycle (225 h), indicating massive cell lysis. During this same time period, a reduction in cellular respiratory activity and efrotomycin biosynthesis were observed.

Notes: Summary A multitrophic population established in wool-scour effluent produced esterase activity with specificity to steryl, wax and triacylglyceryl esters. The wax esterase activity peaked just prior to the esterase activity toward cholesteryl oleate andp-nitrophenol palmitate. The activity was present in both the extracellular and cell membrane fractions. Partial characterization revealed the presence of multiple esterase bands on native polyacrylamide gels. The bacterial esterase activity could be enhanced by the addition of mineral salts.

Notes: Summary The exposure of a wild-type tylosin producing strain ofStreptomyces fradiae to mutagenic agents resulted in the isolation of several tylosin over-producing strains. Examination of three mutants, T4310, 612 and 3204 showed that improved tylosin production was associated with increased hydrolytic enzyme activity and cell growth. The wild-type strain showed lower levels of hydrolytic activity including, protease, amylase, lipase and esterase activities and attained a lower cell density than the mutants.

Notes: Hexakis(2,2,2-trifluorethoxy)cyclotriphosphazene (1b) reacts with borontrichloride at elevated temperatures to give a mixture of polymeric phosphazenes containing imino dichloro and imino bis(trifluoroethoxy)phosphoranetriyle units. The reaction was investigated by 31P NMR. Separation of several fractions of polymers was achieved by hexane/benzene solvent extraction. Molecular weights have been determined by means of membrane and/or vapor pressure osmometry. A reaction mechanism is discussed.

Notes: Mixed chloro- and trifluoroethoxy substituted cyclotriphosphazenes 1a-d react with boron trichloride at elevated temperature to give mixed substituted polyphosphazenes of low molecular weight. The reaction was investigated by 31P NMR. Fractionation of the polymers was achieved by extraction with hexane/benzene. The low molecular weights are explained by a large amount of cyclophosphazenyl cations generated nearly simultaneously.

Notes: Hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (1) reacts with SbCl5 or BCl3 to produce long chain polymers, whereas AlCl 3 gives phosphazenyl cations. TiCl4 does not react and boric acid esters lead to an exchange of one ester group for one chlorine. 31P NMR-spectra were used to identify the reaction products. The molecular weights of the polymeric compounds were measured.

Notes: A novel technique is described for the investigation of polyanions by direct polyelectrolyte titration. In connection with a specially developed phototitrator, an extremely high sensitivity can be reached using 3,6-ionene bromide as cationic titrant and eriochrome black T as metachromatic indicator for end-point detection. This enables both the determination of charge densities for polymer characterization as well as the detection of polymers in aqueous solution down to trace concentrations of 10 μg/L. Monovalent salt ions do not interfere with the titration up to concentrations of about 0,1 mol/L. Potential interference of divalent metal ions can be prevented by adding ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as chelating agent. The applicability of the method was proved by measuring charge densities of poly(sodium acrylate) (NaPAA) in the concentration range of 0,01 to 10 mg/L and of poly(potassium vinyl sulfate) (KPVS). As expected, the charge density of NaPAA decreases with a pH decrease from 11 to 7, whereas the charge density of KPVS is independent of pH.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion- and Erosion-Resistant Pump Material-Investigations Under Flow Conditions Close to PracticeThe major goals of these investigations can be described as follows: -design, construction and test of laboratory appraratus to study the resistance of pump impellers under corrosive and erosive attack in various aggressive media,-simulation of flow conditions characteristics for pumps as close to practice as possible to study the non-uniform attack in corrosive media of various type, concentration and temperature. The following materials were used in these studies: -a ferritic-austenitic cast stainless steel of type 0,03% C - 24% Ni - 20% Cr - 6% Ni - 2,5% Mo - 3% Cu - 0,15% N (German designation: G-X3 CrNiMoCuN24 6)-a purely austenitic cast stainless steel of type 0,07% C - 25% Ni - 20% Cr - 3% Mo - 2% Cu - 0,25% Nb (German designation: G-X 7 NiCrMoCuNb 25 20, Werkstoff-No. 1.4500).The investigations were concentrated on the corrosion and erosioncorrosion behaviour of these steels in static and flowing sulfuric acid of various concentrations and temperatures. The effect of flow conditions of the acid was studied by evaluating the weight losses of the materials in three different apparaturs: the rotating disc, the once-through tube and the impeller with tube-shaped flow canals. The main result of these studis was the well exposed effect of flow conditions of the acid on the corrosion and erosion-corrosion behaviour of the materials. A detailed analysis shows that: 1there is the well-known decrease of the corrosion resistance of both materials under flow in the rotating disc apparatus.2there is, however, an increase of the corrosion resistance in the tube and model impeller apparatus compared to static solutions.3there is a strong increase of the corrosion rate in the region of active corrosion itself under any flow condition of the acid.4there are three types of corrosive attack occuring on the duplex stainless steel independent of the flow of the sulfuric acid: -uniform corrosion,-selective corrosion of the femte,-selective corrosion of the austenite.5there is a region of undefined corrosion behaviour separating the range of corrosion resistance from that of active corrosion for the duplex as well as for the austenitic stainless steel.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion of aluminium and aluminium alloys in nitric acidA literature survey was made to show the suitability of aluminium and aluminium alloys in contact with highly concentrated nitric acid, particularly with regard to the corrosion behaviour of weld joints made using various welding processes. The corrosion resistance of Al99.5 in nitric acid was investigated as functions of temperature and acid concentrations. The linear corrosion rates are plotted in an Arrhenius diagram. Decreasing nitric acid concentrations are causing a parallel shift of the lines in the Arrhenius diagram towards higher corrosion rates.Starting with A199.5, the corrosion rates in nitric acid at and above 99.8 concentration decrease as the A1 contents of the materials increase. Doping with copper should be avoided. After exposure of wrought as well as continuously cast A1 and A1 alloys to highly concentrated technical grade nitric acid at 30 °C (1 year test period), the corrosion behaviour of a number of alloys was comparable to that of pure aluminium grades.
