Notes: A three-dimensional numerical model has been applied to study the impact of freshwater discharge from a river on the coastal circulation in the western Bay of Bengal. The basic dynamical framework of the model follows closely that described by Johns et al.1 for the simulation of coastal upwelling off the east coast of India. Using this model, experiments have been performed to investigate the impact of the freshwater discharge at the location of Godavari river along the east coast of India. A comparison of the model results, with and without the inclusion of river discharge, shows that the river discharge into the western Bay of Bengal suppresses the upwelling near the river mouth. Though there are no detailed observations on the flow structure near the mouth of the Godavari river, the computed results are in qualitative agreement with the observations documented by Rao and Jayaraman2 and Rao,3 who have shown that during monsoon period the upwelling off Godavari estuary is suppressed.

Notes: A numerical technique is developed using an implicit time-marching scheme to study the deformation history of steel building frames in fire, by considering the change in the material properties due to rise of temperature, effect of creep and large deformations. A computer program has been developed for the analysis of plane frames based on the above algorithm using incremental and iterative procedures. Based on such a study, the length of time for which the structure can perform its function without either local or overall failure can be predicted.

Notes: Correlation is a measure of similarity between two functions. When two functions are exactly similar and equal, the correlation between them is maximum. The correlation concept can be used for system design, e.g. the four-bar mechanism, the slider crank mechanism, etc. The motion generated by four-bar linkage can be expressed as a function of link dimensions, input and output angles. The product of generated function and desired function gives correlation. The best possible design would be when the deviation of actual correlation from its maximum value (i.e. 100 per cent correlation) is least. This concept, in fact, leads to a modified least squares approach and based on this an objective function is formulated and minimized to give link dimensions. The results obtained are better than the least squares technique, and this is illustrated through different numerical examples.

Notes: A new direct search package is presented. Typical test functions solved establish the robustness and efficiency of the package. The most significant features of the package are that it works satisfactorily even in single precision and requires much less memory. It needs only the function values and the unidimensional search is totally dispensed with. Methods such as different descent techniques, the RMS procedure, the co-ordinate movement technique and the gallop-canter equalization scheme form the sequence of strategies.

Notes: Geometric programming is a powerful technique and its application to mechanism synthesis has not been fully explored. In this paper, slider-crank mechanism is chosen since the objective function consists of a large number of terms while there are only two design variables. Thus the degree of difficulty is more and does not lend itself to easy application of the geometric programming. Here, modification of the objective function is suggested so that the degree of difficulty reduces to zero even when the working space constraint is imposed. This results in a near optimum solution. Application of signomial geometric programming is illustrated through a numerical example.

Notes: The paper presents the results of investigations conducted to evaluate the added mass to represent fluid-structure interaction effects in vibration/dynamic analysis of floating bodies such as ship hulls. While the structural plating is idealized by 9-noded plate/shell finite elements, the fluid domain is modelled by 20-noded/21-noded 3-D finite elements in the investigations conducted. A new 8-noded element has been developed to model the interface between the structure and the fluid. An efficient computational methodology has been used for computation of added mass. The finite element models are validated by comparing the results with those given by analytical solution for a submerged sphere. The efficacy of the finite element model is demonstrated through convergence of the results obtained for a floating barge problem. A better convergence rate and distribution of added mass in three orthogonal directions have been obtained.

Notes: Finite elements based on Mindlin-Reissner theory and three-dimensional theory are used to study the distribution of shear forces and twisting moments in plates with various simple support conditions. Differences between the results obtained using these two theories are highlighted. A crude adaptive mesh refinement procedure is applied to improve the accuracy of the finite-element analysis.

Notes: The sensitivity of the closed-loop eigenvalues and eigenvectors of actively controlled flexible structures with distinct eigenvalues is considered. The sensitivity information is essential in the optimization of large space structures with stability/performance robustness, closed-loop eigenvalues or damping ratios treated as objective or constraint functions. The efficiency of the analytical expressions derived for the rates of change of the closed-loop eigenvalues with respect to structural design variables is demonstrated through two numerical examples. The utility of the sensitivity of the closed-loop eigenvalues and eigenvectors in evaluating the derivatives of the stability and performance robustness indices is also indicated and illustrated through numerical examples.

Notes: An adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) procedure is used in static thin shell analysis using triangular facet shell elements. The procedure described herein uses the h-version of adaptive refinement based on an error estimate determined by using the best guess values of bending moments and membrane forces obtained from a previous solution. It includes the use of a relaxation factor to achieve better convergence. Some examples are presented to illustrate this method. The results obtained are compared with those of uniform mesh refinement (UMR).

Notes: This paper deals with the elastic free vibration analysis and structural shape optimization of prismatic folded plate and shell structures with circular curved planform. The structures are supported on diaphragms at two opposite edges. The basic formulation of a family of curved variable thickness C(0) Mindlin-Reissner finite strips is presented. The accuracy and performance of these newly developed strips are explored through a series of examples including annular plate sectors, a box girder bridge and a cylinder with an interior longitudinal plate. Numerical results obtained are compared with results from other sources. The whole shape optimization process is carried out by integrating finite strip analysis, cubic spline shape and thickness definition, sensitivity analysis and mathematical programming. The objective is either the maximization of the fundamental frequency or the minimization of volume by changing the shape or thickness variation of the cross-section of the structure with constraints on the volume or natural frequencies. Several examples are included to illustrate and highlight various features of the optimization, including annular sector plates, a curved box girder bridge and a cylinder shell segment with curved pianform.
