    Notes: Abstract We consider the numerical solution of an unconfined detonation problem modelled by differential/algebraic equations in a boundary value format. The problem has index one throughout the interval of integration, except at a free boundary point, where it has index two. Moreover, a nonlinear constraint is active at the free boundary point. We consider a simple mathematical model, as well as a more realistic and functionally complex model. In both cases, the resulting boundary value problem is solved directly, using a collocation method. This approach compares favorably with the solution techniques proposed previously in the literature and enables us to examine some interesting properties of the solution to the detonation problem.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, a family of fourth orderP-stable methods for solving second order initial value problems is considered. When applied to a nonlinear differential system, all the methods in the family give rise to a nonlinear system which may be solved using a modified Newton method. The classical methods of this type involve at least three (new) function evaluations per iteration (that is, they are 3-stage methods) and most involve using complex arithmetic in factorising their iteration matrix. We derive methods which require only two (new) function evaluations per iteration and for which the iteration matrix is a true real perfect square. This implies that real arithmetic will be used and that at most one real matrix must be factorised at each step. Also we consider various computational aspects such as local error estimation and a strategy for changing the step size.

    Notes: Abstract A class of two-step (hybrid) methods is considered for solving pure oscillation second order initial value problems. The nonlinear system, which results on applying methods of this type to a nonlinear differential system, may be solved using a modified Newton iteration scheme. From this class the author has derived methods which are fourth order accurate,P-stable, require only two (new) function evaluations per iteration and have a true real perfect square iteration matrix. Now, we propose an extension to sixth order,P-stable methods which require only three (new) function evaluations per iteration and for which the iteration matrix is a true realperfect cube. This implies that at most one real matrix must be factorised at each step. These methods have been implemented in a new variable step, local error controlling code.

    Notes: Abstract Models are presented for the cooling of tephra during fallout from explosive eruption columns. All tephra particles are assumed to be spherical and heat loss is considered to occur by radiation and forced convection. Grainsize is the most important control on the cooling. Clasts larger than 25 cm diameter suffer little heat loss, whereas clasts smaller than 1.6 cm diameter are completely cold on deposition. Large clasts form a well-developed chilled margin during fallout and a breadcrust texture can result if vesiculation of the hot interior occurs. The results of these calculations are combined with a model for fallout from the margins of an eruption column to predict the proximal temperature variation with distance from the vent in the deposits. Temperatures high enough for dense welding in proximal fallout deposits can extend from a few hundred metres to nearly 2 km. Extent of the welded facies increases with column height, mean grainsize and magmatic temperature. Welded fallout deposits are only predicted to occur for high temperature silicic and intermediate magmas with temperatures 〉850°C. These predictions are in good agreement with observations, in that welded fallout deposits have only been documented in high temperature dacites, rhyolites and panellerites. A postulated fallout origin for welded rocks that can be traced significantly further than 2 km from vent must be suspect.

    Notes: Abstract A model for sedimentation from turbulent suspensions predicts that tephra concentration decreases exponentially with time in an ascending volcanic column and in the overlying umbrella cloud. For grain-size distributions typical of plinian eruptions application of the model predicts for thickness variations in good agreement with the exponential thinning observed in tephra fall deposits. The model also predicts a proximal region where fallout from the plume margins results in a more rapid decrease in thickness so that the deposit shows two segments on a thickness versus distance plot. Several examples of deposits with two segments are known. The distance at which the two segments intersect is a measure of eruption column height. The thickness half-distance (∼ equivalent to the dispersal index of Walker) is strongly correlated with column height, but is also weakly dependent on grain-size distribution of the ejecta. For a dispersal index of 500 km2 (the plinian/subplinian boundary of Walker) column heights between 14 and 18 km are calculated. For ultraplinian deposits with D〉50000 km2 column heights of at least 45 km are implied. Model grain-size distributions of the deposits have sorting values comparable to those observed in tephra fall deposits formed from eruption columns in a weak or negligible cross-wind. Median diameter decreases exponentially with distance as is observed. Sorting (σφ) improves with distance as is observed in plinian deposits in a weak wind. However, tephra fall deposits formed in strong winds do not show improved sorting with distance and proximal deposits are typically somewhat better sorted than the model calculations. Differences are attributed to the influence of wind which disperses particles further than predicted in our model and which has an increasing influence as particle size decreases.
