    Description: We report the discovery of two cataclysmic variables located with the assistance of X-ray positions from the HEAO 1 Modulation Collimator and the Large-Area Sky Survey. Each case is distinguished by evidence of two periodic modulations that appear to represent the orbital period and the spin period of the white dwarf, respectively. The first case, H0459 + 246, has been observed optically during faint states (V approximately 16), in which there are spectral features of both an accretion disk and a K star. The light curves in the V and I bands are consistent with ellipsoidal variations in the secondary stars with a binary period of 9.952 hr. X-ray observations with EXOSAT reveal a strong pulsation with a period approximately 62 minutes. This result confirms an 'intermediate polar' classification for H0459 + 246. The pulsation is observed at 63.2 minutes in the optical I band. The long orbital period opens the possibility that H0459 + 246 is a relatively young intermediate polar that might evolve into a polar. The second case, H0857--242, shows radial velocity modulations at 1.78 hr along with photometric variations at a period approximately 49 minutes. The latter are observed only during the decay phase of dwarf nova outbursts (13 less than V less than 17), which apparently recur frequently. Given the lack of X-ray monitoring observations and the absence of proof that the 49 minute periodicity is coherent over long time-scales, we regard H0857--242 as a candidate intermediate polar. Photographic records from th e Harvard Observatory Plate Library further reveal superoutbursts for H0857--242 (V approximately 11). A bright X-ray source that is both an intermediate polar and a continually cycling dwarf nova may provide an effective means of measuring the time delay for the arrival of accreting matter at the white dwarf surface, relative to the onset of optical brightening.

    Notes: The intrinsic rate constant for the rate of reaction of SO2 with porous CaO in an excess of O2 to form CaSO4 has been determined from SO2 sorption data on a wide range of particle diameters (1 μm- 1mm), SO2 partial pressures (60 Pa to 5 kPa), and temperatures (973- 1,478 K). An intrinsic SO2 reaction order of unity has been validated through current fixed-bed experiments in the 60 to 300 Pa SO2 partial pressure range, while fluidized-bed data were used to validate the reaction order from 500 Pa to 5 kPa SO2 partial pressure. The absolute value of the rate constant and the activation energy was derived from data on small (1 μm) particles, which approach the limit of kinetic control. While analysis of this data base does minimize the role of intraparticle diffusion through the porous sorbent particle, the filling of the small pores by the product deposits and the associated loss of internal surface area is critical to the data reduction. It is believed that the intrinsic rate constant is known to the accuracy to which the reactivity and the BET surface area may be measured.

    Notes: The mathematical model outlined in Part I is recast in a form suitable for numerical computation. The spatial derivatives are replaced by finite-difference expressions, which leads to a set of ordinary differential equations coupled to a set of nonlinear algebraic relations. This system is solved using existing integration techniques. The resulting algorithm simulates the characteristic behavior of the classical modes of electrophoresis, which is shown by examples involving moving boundary electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing. In the first example two different integration schemes are used and their accuracy and stability investigated. The second example illustrates the versatility of the methodology.

    Description: We have observed a field in Baade's Window using the Wide Field Camera (WFC) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and obtain V- and I-band photometry down to V approximately 22.5. These data go several magnitudes fainter than previously obtained from the ground. The location of the break in the luminosity function suggests that there are a significant number of intermediate age (less than 10 Gyr) stars in the Galactic bulge. This conclusion rests on the assumptions that the extinction towards our field is similar to that seen in other parts of Baade's Window, that the distance to the bulge is approximately 8 kpc, and that we can determine fairly accurate zero points for the HST photometry. Changes in any one of these assumptions could increase the inferred age, but a conspiracy of lower reddening, a shorter distance to the bulge, and/or photometric zero-point errors would be needed to imply a population entirely older than 10 Gyr. We infer an initial mass function slope for the main-sequence stars, and find that it is consistent with that measured in the solar neighborhood; unfortunately, the slope is poorly constrained because we sample only a narrow range of stellar mass and because of uncertainties in the observed luminosity function at the faint end.

    Description: HST observations of Comet Levy at geocentric and heliocentric distances of about 1 AU show a highly asymmetrical coma in which the sunward-facing hemisphere is brighter than the tailward one by a factor of 2; this is in keeping with dayside volatile sublimation. Radial brightness profiles perpendicular to the sun-comet line are found to be highly symmetric about the nucleus. Detailed image analysis reveals indications of a hemispherical dust arc which propagates through the coma at an average projected velocity of about 0.16 km/sec. It is suggested that periodic occurrences of such dust arcs could account for the temporal variability in IUE continuum photometry.

    Description: Three 'normal' Virgo cluster spiral galaxies, NGC 4254, NGC 4501, and NGC 4654, were mapped at 160 and 360 micron wavelengths with arrays of 45 arcsec beams using the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory and the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility. Another galaxy, NGC 4321, was mapped at 160 microns. Approximately one-third of the total flux from the galaxies is emitted at wavelengths longer than 12 microns. The maps show centrally peaked, but spatially extended luminosity distributions consistent with disk material.

    Description: We present results from a four-frequency observation of a 6 deg x 0.6 deg strip of the sky centered near the star Gamma Ursae Minoris (GUM) during the fourth flight of the Millimeter-wave Anistropy experiment(MAX). The observation was made with a 1.4 deg peak-to-peak sinusoidal chop in all bands. The FWHM beam sizes were 0.55 deg +/- 0.05 deg at 3.5 per cm and 0.75 deg +/- 0.05 deg at 6, 9, and 14 per cm. During this observation significant correlated structure was observed at 3.5, 6 and 9 per cm with amplitudes similar to those observed in the GUM region during the second and third fligts of MAX. The frequency spectrum is consistent with cosmic microwave background (CMB) and inconsistent with thermal emission from interstellar dust. The extrapolated amplitudes of synchrotron and free-free emission are too small to account for the amplitude of the observed structure, If all of the structure is attributed to CMB anisotropy with a Gaussian autocorrelation function and a coherence angle of 25 min, then the most probable values of delta T/T(sub CMB) in the 3.5, 6 and 9 per cm bads are (4.3 +2.7/-1.6) x 10(exp -5), 2.8 (+4.3/-1/1) x 10(exp -5), and 3.5 (+3.0/-1.6) x 10(exp -5) (95% confidence upper and lower limits), respectively.

    Description: The Hubble Space Telescope/Faint Object Spectrograph (HST/FOS) recorded a remarkable transient brightening in the C IV lambda lambda 1548,50 emissions of the rapidly rotating Pleiades G dwarf H II 314. On the one hand the 'flare' might be a rare event luckily observed; on the other hand it might be a bellwether of the coronal heating in very young solar-mass stars. If the latter, flaring provides a natural spin-down mechanism through associated sporadic magnetospheric mass loss.

    Description: We report 22 emission-line AGN as bright, hard X-ray sources. All of them appear to be new classifications with the exception of one peculiar IRAS source which is a known quasar and has no published spectrum. This sample exhibits a rich diversity in optical spectral properties and luminosities, ranging from a powerful broad-absorption-line quasar to a weak nucleus embedded in a nearby NGC galaxy. Two cases confer X-ray luminosities in excess of 10 exp 47 erg/s. However, there is a degree of uncertainty in the X-ray identification for the AGN fainter than V about 16.5. Optically, several AGN exhibit very strong Fe II emission. One Seyfert galaxy with substantial radio flux is an exception to the common association of strong Fe II emission and radio-quiet AGN. The previously recognized IRAS quasar shows extreme velocities in the profiles of the forbidden lines; the 0 III pair is broadened to the point that the lines are blended. Several of these AGN show evidence of intrinsic obscuration, illustrating the effectiveness of hard X-ray surveys in locating AGN through high column density.
