Notizen: Abstract The water permeabilities of 3174 astomatous, isolated cuticular membranes from Citrus aurantium L. leaves were studied. Trees were grown in environmental chambers at temperatures ranging from 15 to 35° C and humidities of 50% and 90%. Photosynthetically active radiation was 500–1000 μmol photons·m−2· s−1. The different growing conditions had no effect on the water permeability of the membranes. However, storing isolated cuticular membranes at 8° C for up to 112 weeks decreased their water permeability, and it is argued that this is a consequence of the healing of defects between wax crystallites, and also indicates the dynamic nature of cuticular waxes.

Notizen: Molecular Geometry and Excited Electronic States. XXIV. Theoretical Contribution to the S0 and S1 Molecular Structure and to the Sp ← S0 Electronic Spectral Behaviour of 1,4-Distyryl Benzene an of its Doubly-Charged IonsFor selected configurations of 1,4-distyryl benzene and its doubly-charged ions the completely-optimized molecular geometries of the S0 and S1 states are presented. The structural peculiarities and differences are discussed. The Sp ← S0 electronic spectral data calculated on this basis are given and compared with available experimental results.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Kinetic Resolutions Starting with rac-Alcohols or rac-Acyl Halides Using Optically Active Inductor BasesIn the reaction of one mole equivalent of achiral acyl halides with two equivalents of rac-alcohols in the presence of one equivalent of an optically active inductor base (tertiary amine) partially optically active esters and partially optically active alcohols are formed, having in some cases high optical purity (60 - 70%). The alcohol moiety of the ester and the unchanged alcohol are of opposite configuration. Treatment of two equivalents of rac-acylhalides with one equivalent of an achiral alcohol and an inductor base also leads to a high degree of optical induction. The carbonic acid moiety in the ester and the unchanged acid are of opposite configuration. The optical induction is influenced a) by the ligands linked to the reaction centers, b) by the relative quantities of the reacting partners, c) by the solvent, and d) by the temperature.

Beschreibung: Substantiating data developed by a NASA-industry team (NIT) for subsequent NASA decisions on the 'right' set of manned transportation elements needed for human access to space are discussed. Attention is given to the framework for detailed definition of these manned transportation elements. Identifying and defining architecture evaluation criteria, i.e., attributes, specified the amount and type of data needed for each concept under consideration. Several architectures, each beginning with today's transportation systems, were defined using representative systems to explore future options and address specific questions currently being debated. The present solutions emphasize affordability, safety, routineness, and reliability. Key issues associated with current business practices were challenged and the impact associated with these practices quantified.

Beschreibung: Recent work completed by a NASA-Industry Team designed to identify the requirements for the U.S. manned transportation system (MTS) is presented. This MTS study was designed to address important outstanding issues concerning present systems and what the configuration and capabilities of a new manned vehicle should be. The rigorous process developed is measurable and repeatable and helps define a coherent and integrated strategy for which space launch vehicle concepts can be defined for future manned transportation to space.

Beschreibung: Attention is given to the Manned Transportation System (MTS) Study, initiated to help identify the 'right' transportation system architectures needed for human access to space. A listing of the requirements used for this study and the rationale behind them are given. Attributes allow comparison of elements that meet the requirements and the 'needs' (mission model). The attributes include: safety, probability of mission success, funding profile, architecture cost risk, schedule confidence, dependability, availability, mission growth potential, environment, resiliency, and alternate access. The attributes need to be measurable, to have repeatable calculations and well-defined assumptions, to have their weight determined relative to other attributes, and to be a discriminator. The process used to determine the attributes, which involved the MTS team forum and some of the quality function deployment techniques, is discussed.

Beschreibung: The Manned Transportation System (MTS) Study has constructed a comprehensive set of transportation architectures, using current and possible vehicle systems to address specifically a series of considerations which focus and guide what the future transportation architectures should be. Payload manifesting ground rules are presented to illustrate the present approach in establishing flight rates from the MTS mission models. Manned system flight rates and relative personnel safety characteristics differences are presented.
