Notes: The characteristics of the spatial distribution of Ar glow discharge plasma were experimentally investigated. By means of direct comparisons between theory and experiment, the effects of the variation of gap separation, gas pressure, and electrode radius on the spatial distributions of electron density and electric field were studied. Results indicate that the maximum electron density moves toward the cathode as the gap separation or gas pressure increases while variation of electrode radius produces little effect. Predictions from a theoretical model have been experimentally verified. General agreements between theory and experiment were found to be reasonably good except in the cathode region, where discrepancy exists. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: On the basis of an analytic model developed previously [S. T. Pai, J. Appl. Phys. 71, 5820 (1992)], an improved version of the model for the description of dc glow discharge plasma was successfully developed. A set of closed form solutions was obtained from the governing equations. The two-dimensional, analytic solutions are functional and completely satisfy the governing equations, the actual boundary conditions, and Maxwell equations. They can be readily used to carry out numerical calculations without the necessity of employing any assumed boundary conditions. Results obtained from the model reveal that as the discharge gap spacing or pressure increases the maximum value in the electron density distribution moves toward the cathode. At a sufficiently large value of gap spacing, the positive column phenomenon begins to appear in the discharge region. The model has the capability of treating the positive column and negative glow as a continuous system without the necessity of studying them separately. The model also predicts a sharp rise of the positive ion density near the cathode and field reversal in the anode region. Variation of the electrode radius produces little effect on the axial spatial distribution of physical quantities studied. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A comparison of Si doping behavior in GaAs layers on (110) and (001) surfaces under the same growth conditions shows that the autocompensation ratio in (110) layers is usually higher than in (001) layers. However, under certain conditions (low substrate temperature, high As4 pressure, and low Si flux), the free electron concentration in the (110) layers can actually be higher. We attribute this behavior to Ga vacancy traps in the (001) surface layers; whereas layers on the (110) surface remain almost defect free. Our results help to clarify the mechanism of defect generation in the (001) layers, which leads to reduced carrier concentration at low growth temperatures. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The Kerr spectra and optical constants of amorphous Co1−xSix (0.59≤×≤0.77) alloy films were measured in the spectral range 1.6–3.5 eV. It was found that there is rather considerable Kerr rotation near the high-energy side of 3.5 eV for the films (0.67≤×≤0.75), and there is a maximum value of −0.35°, which is comparable with that of pure Co, at x=0.75. The considerable Kerr rotation was ascribed to the following two causes: (i) the finite, but nonzero, nondiagonal element of dielectric function; (ii) the large optical constant effect due to the appropriate diagonal element of dielectric function. These changes of dielectric function originated from the metal-to-semiconductor transition controlled by Si concentration. There may be potential magneto-optical application in blue light range for such kinds of material. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A Ni/GaAs/Si(001) structure was used to investigate solid-phase reactions of Ni with GaAs and Si. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy and secondary-ion-mass-spectrometry depth profile data reveal that a Ni/GaAs/Si(001) structure converts to a crystalline GaAs/amorphous NiSi/Si(001) after low temperature (≤350 °C) annealing. We demonstrate that the reaction is driven by the decomposition of a NixGaAs intermediate which is induced by the proximity of the Si substrate. Two models are suggested to explain the mechanism of a crystalline GaAs layer nucleated from NixGaAs on the amorphous NiSi layer. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Second- and third-order moments of temporal increments of the longitudinal velocity fluctuation have been measured using hot wires in a fully developed turbulent channel flow and analyzed using values of the mean energy dissipation rate inferred from direct numerical simulation data for the same flow and Reynolds numbers. The results indicate that dissipative range scales approach isotropy relatively rapidly when the mean shear is negligible. For larger inertial range type scales, the approach is slower. The rate at which isotropy is approached seems slower for third-order than second-order structure functions. This rate depends more on the mean shear than on the turbulent Reynolds number. Two-point laser Doppler anemometry measurements provide reasonable support for the use of Taylor's hypothesis, at least outside the buffer region. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Previous work has shown that adult mummichogs (Fundulus heteroclitus) from a polluted site (Piles Creek, PC, New Jersey) were more vulnerable to predation by blue crabs than fish from a more pristine site (Tuckerton, TK, New Jersey). The present study was conducted to compare the spontaneous activity, swimming performance and predator avoidance of fish of the two populations at early life stages. When raised in synthetic salt water, both newly hatched and 1–month-old mummichog larvae from TK had greater spontaneous activity, swimming performance, and stamina than those from PC. In comparison to TK, PC larvae were less vulnerable to predation by yearling mummichogs at 1 week old, but were more vulnerable at 1 month old. Variation in behaviour and swimming ability of TK and PC larvae accounted for the differences in vulnerability to predation. TK larvae employed greater swimming and irregular movement, which was more successful for survival of older larger larvae. In contrast, PC larvae hid, often remaining motionless, which was advantageous for survival of young smaller larvae. Contaminants had been assumed responsible for the behavioural differences in the PC population. However, since differences were seen in larvae raised in synthetic salt water, it is possible that maternally transferred neurotoxicants (possibly delayed effects) and/or inherent factors also play a role.

Notes: Abstract Ab initio MP2 calculations have been carried out to study the activation of methane on lanthanide oxide La2O3. O- and O2 2- are assumed to be the active species on the oxide surface. The possible roles of O2- and O2 4- on the oxide surface in C-H bond activation are also investigated. It is shown that the CH4 oxidative dehydrogenation occurs much more readily on O- and O2 2- than on O2- and O2 4-. The results indicate that O- and O2 2- are the active species and therefore support the O- and O2 2- mechanisms assumed for the reactions. The promoter compound containing Br- is found to be favorable for the methane activation.
