    Notes: Low-aspect-ratio tokamaks with toroidal currents, Ip, up to 250 kA are formed and sustained in the Helicity Injected Tokamak experiment [Nelson et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 72, 3666 (1994)] using coaxial helicity injection. These plasmas are produced without use of a current drive transformer. Average toroidal currents are sustained at high values, 〈Ip〉=225 kA for 2 ms, where electron thermal energies are measured up to 80 eV with spectroscopy data suggesting burnthrough to the higher ionization states of oxygen. Currents can also be sustained for longer periods at lower values, 〈Ip〉=138 kA for 7 ms. These tokamaks are characterized by a rotating, n=1 distortion, with poloidal distortions approximately following the field line pitch, which only occur on the outer bad-curvature region. Equilibrium reconstructions show these plasmas have a tokamak q profile (q0=5 – 8, q95=10 – 12, qcyl(approximately-equal-to)3.6), with a hollow toroidal current profile and up to 170 kA of closed field toroidal current in a low-aspect-ratio, A=1.68 configuration. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract. At present about half of the N fertilizer used in China is as urea. However, recovery of urea N in crops is often limited to 30–40%. Application of urea in combination with hydroquinone plus dicyandiamide (U-HQ-DCD) gave an improved urea-N recovery and grain yield by spring wheat in a pot experiment. The apparent total urea-N recovery was 69% and 73% of this recovered N was found in the grain. The grain yield was 32% higher than in the treatment where urea was applied without inhibitors. The application of hydroquinone and dicyandiamide also resulted in a smaller soil nitrate content, which might restrict post-harvest leaching of N. Another beneficial effect of these inhibitors was that the N2O emission from the soil—plant system was reduced by 35% compared to the treatment where only urea was applied. The use of urea in combination with hydroquinone plus encapsulated calcium carbide gave smaller beneficial effects.

    Notes: The magnetic microstructure in a Co/Pt multilayer has been imaged by magnetic force microscopy employing a novel tip structure. Magnetic tips have been fabricated by evaporating a thin film onto a single facet of the pyramidal tip of a silicon nitride cantilever. Nanolithographically defined elements have been used to simulate the micromagnetic structure of the tip and have been investigated by the Lorentz mode of electron microscopy. We demonstrate that stray fields from the Co/Pt multilayer can be sensed by the tip producing images of the magnetic microstructure with a fine structure on a scale of 30–40 nm. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Urban groundwater is an important and valuable resource for Shijadran City, China. With the impact of rapid urban growth Shijadran is at risk of severe aquifer depletion, regional water table decline and supply facilities refurbishment. This paper presents a multi-plan management of urban groundwater with two optimisation scenarios in order to alleviate and improve the environmental, social and economic situations caused by over-exploitation of groundwater. It was developed based on the analysis of regional hydrogeology, water use and land use. A calibrated groundwater flow model was incorporated into the optimisation models through a water head response matrix of the Quaternary aquifer. The current supply optimisation not only met the increasingly growing need of water demand but also controlled and eliminated the various hazards caused by groundwater over-pumping. Artificial recharge management, with conjunctive use of surface water and groundwater, provided a practical solution to the overall groundwater exhaustion and led to a solution for water table recovery, aquifer protection and sustainable water use. A comprehensive water management strategy for decision making was developed to reduce the negative impacts of urban growth on water use.

    Notes: Two density populations of full-size feline calicivirus (FCV), the intact infectious particles (PH) and the empty capsids (PL), have been crystallized using the hanging-drop method. Exposed to high-intensity synchrotron radiation, PH and PL crystals were shown to diffract X-rays to about 3.0 and 5.5 Å resolution, respectively. The PH crystal belongs to an orthorhombic crystal system with unit-cell dimensions a = 889.0, b = 995.0, c = 436.6 Å. Based on the VM value (3.4 Å3 Da−l), it was estimated that one crystallographic asymmetric unit of PH crystals contains the unique content of an entire virus particle, not necessarily from the same particle. This implies the presence of 60-fold non-crystallographic redundancy. The particle orientation was obtained from a locked rotation function.

    Notes: Abstract. Agents that produce their effects through an antisense mechanism offer the possibility of developing highly specific alternatives to traditional pharmacological antagonists, thereby providing a novel class of therapeutic agents, ones which act at the level of gene expression. Among the antisense compounds, antisense RNA produced intracellularly by an expression vector has been used extensively in the past several years. This review considers the advantages of the antisense RNA approach over the use of antisense oligodeoxynucleotides, the different means by which one may deliver and produce antisense RNA inside cells, and the experimental criteria one should use to ascertain whether the antisense RNA is acting through a true antisense mechanism. Its major emphasis is on exploring the potential therapeutic use of antisense RNA in several areas of medicine. For example, in the field of oncology antisense RNA has been used to inhibit several different target proteins, such as growth factors, growth factor receptors, proteins responsible for the invasive potential of tumor cells and proteins directly involved in cell cycle progression. In particular, a detailed discussion is presented on the possibility of selectively inhibiting the growth of tumor cells by using antisense RNA expression vectors directed to the individual calmodulin transcripts. Detailed consideration is also provided on the development and potential therapeutic applications of antisense RNA vectors targeted to the D2 dopamine receptor subtype. Studies are also summarized in which antisense RNA has been used to develop more effective therapies for infections with certain viruses such as the human immunodeficiency virus and the virus of hepatitis B, and data are reviewed suggesting new approaches to reduce elevated blood pressure using antisense RNA directed to proteins and receptors from the renin-angiotensin system. Finally, we outline some of the problems which the studies so far have yielded and some outstanding questions which remain to be answered in order to develop further antisense RNA vectors as therapeutic agents.
