Notes: At 77 K, stimulated emission from n=1 light-hole excitons in a ZnSe-Zn0.8Cd0.2Se superlattice is observed and the oscillation mode properties of n=1 light-hole and heavy-hole excitons are analyzed. It is noticed that the ZnSe-Zn0.8Cd0.2Se superlattice with the shorter Fabry–Pérot cavity length d has the larger threshold excitation. The threshold of each mode has been determined using its time delay curve. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Essential to the assessment of the fatigue integrity of critical components is the prediction of their crack propagation lives. This requires the effective and efficient characterization of the fatigue crack growth behaviour of the material when using a small number of specimens. A test facility, able to control the range of applied load (ΔP ) and range of stress intensity factor (ΔK ), has been used to determine the fatigue crack growth rates in corner notched specimens of Udimet 720 for stress ratios of 0.5, 0.1 and −1.0. Initially, the results were analysed in terms of the three-point secant data reduction method. Subsequently, the benefits to be gained by the use of alternative methods involving regression analysis have been examined. The effectiveness of the procedures has been assessed in terms of the extent to which they reduce the width of the scatter band representing the fatigue crack growth behaviour and the accuracy with which the experimental observed fatigue lives are predicted. On this basis, the results from the ΔK controlled tests were superior to those obtained under ΔP control, when analysed by similar data reduction methods. In addition, the results from ΔK tests were improved when the secant method was replaced by a linear regression method, which allowed the sample interval to be reduced and more levels of constant ΔK to be examined in a single specimen.

Notes: Summary The aeroelastic response analysis of a coupled rotor/fuselage system is approached by iterative solution of the blade aeroelastic response in the non-inertial reference frame fixed on the hub, and the periodic response of the fuselage in the inertial reference frame. A model of the coupled system hinged with the flap and lag hinges, the pitching bearing which may not coincide with the hinges, and the sweeping-blade configuration is established. The moderate-deflection beam theory and the two-dimensional quasi-steady aerodynamic model are employed to model the aeroelastic blade, all the kinetic and inertial factors are taken into account in a unified manner. A five-nodes, 15-DOFs pre-twisted nonuniform beam element is developed for the discretization of the blade, three rigid-body-motion DOFs are introduced for the motion of the hinges and the bearing. The Hamilton's principle is employed to evaluate the equation of motion of the blade. The derived nonlinear ordinary differential equations with time-dependent periodic coefficients are solved by a modified quasi-linearization method, which is developed for the higher DOF periodic system. The resulting periodic forces and moments exerted on the fuselage by all the blades are evaluated every time, when the converged nonlinear periodic response of the blade is obtained under the consideration of the equilibrium of the blades. The fuselage structure is simplified to be a beam structure, the governing equation is established in the inertial reference frame and a two-nodes beam element is used to discretize the flexible fuselage. The periodic response of the fuselage is solved by a simple shooting method. The iteration of the rotor/fuselage response is continued, until the aeroelastic responses of the blade and the fuselage converge simultaneously. Both the hovering and the forward flight states can be considered. The results of a computed numerical example by the developed program are presented to verify in practice the economy of the modeling as well as the reliability and efficiency of the corresponding solving methods.

Notes: Abstract  Antibodies were used to examine the expression patterns of Antennapedia (Antp), Ultrabithorax (Ubx), Ubx and abdominal-A combined(Ubx/abd-A),and Distalless (Dll) in the embryos of the moth Manduca sexta. We found that the spatial and temporal pattern of Antp expression in Manduca was correlated with the anterior migration of two patches of epithelium that include the anterior-most tracheal pits, and with the development of functional spiracles. Ubx expression showed an intricate pattern which suggests complex regulation during development. Throughout Manduca embryogenesis the expression of Ubx/Abd-A and Dll was similar to that reported for other insects. However, there was no apparent reduction in Ubx/Abd-A expression in the Manduca abdominal proleg primordia that expressed Dll. The expression of these four proteins was also examined in embryosof the Manduca homozygous homeotic mutant Octopod (Octo). The Octo mutation results in the transformation of A1 and A2 in the anterior direction, with homeotic legs appearing on A1 and occasionally A2. Our results suggest that in Octo animals there is a reduction in the level of Ubx protein expression throughout its domain. Based on homeotic gene expression in wild-type and mutant Manduca and in other insects, we discuss potential roles of homeotic genes in insect morphological evolution.

Notes: Abstract A new generation of electrocardiogram (ECG) electrodes have been fabricated and superficially modified by a special controlled precorrosion process. The electrodes have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), resistance–capacitance measurements (RCM) and simulated defibrillation recovery (SDR). The resulting surface of the Sn alloys was rough, and, consequently, a large active surface area was available. As a result, a higher electrocardiogram electrode performance, including low alternating current (a.c.) impedance, excellent time stability and improved SDR, was achieved. Such new design can surely find important future applications in clinical diagnosis. © 1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Notes: Abstract Ultrafine γ-Fe(C), α-Fe(C) and Fe3C particles were prepared by arc-discharge synthesis in a methane atmosphere. The phases, morphology, structure and surface layer of the particles were studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the mean particle size ranged from 9.8 to 12.8 nm. The surface of particles mostly consisted of a carbon layer and a little oxide. Phase transformation from γ-Fe(C) to α-Fe(C) was studied by annealing in vacuum and by differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetry (DTA–TGA) measurement. The abundance of γ-Fe(C) was determined by a magnetization measurement to be approximately 30%. Phase transformation occurred between 300 and 500 °C in a flowing argon atmosphere. The Fe3C particles oxidized to α-Fe2O3 and carbon dioxide at 610 °C or so. © 1998 Chapman & Hall

Notes: Abstract The process of steady-state wedge cutting through steel plates is investigated by analyzing experimental data and developing a simple and realistic model of the problem. Kinematics of the cutting process is discussed and three characteristic deformation zones are identified: (i) plastic zone at wedge tip, (ii) transient bent flap, and (iii) transition zone. Deformation energies are calculated for each zone, and the upper bound theorem in plasticity is applied to derive a closed-form solution for the cutting force. Frictional effects were considered including machining friction near the wedge tip and sliding friction between the transient flap and the wedge surface. Prediction of the steady-state cutting model is compared with experiments conducted at Cambridge University, MIT, and Det norske Veritas. Good correlation with the test data is reported. A parametric study is performed and on that basis a simple approximate solution is developed. An interesting association was discovered with previous empirical formulas proposed by Minorsky, Vaughan, and Kuroiwa.
