Notizen: Effects of silicon wafer surface orientation on very thin oxide quality were studied, testing Si(100) and (111) wafers. It has been found that the very thin oxide quality is determined by the silicon wafer surface orientation, and that when Si(111) is oxidized, SiO2/Si(111) interface microroughness increases as oxide becomes thicker than 10 nm, resulting in a degradation of oxide films quality on Si(111). When oxide thickness is decreased less than 10 nm, Si/SiO2 interface smoothness is maintained similar for Si(100) and (111) but SiO2/Si interface for Si(111) exhibits larger interface charges and larger threshold-voltage shift due to hot-electron injection than that for Si(100). © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Fine powders of Sm2(Fe0.9Co0.1)17Nx (x=∼3) with particle sizes (d) around 1 μm as coated with zinc metal produced via the photodecomposition of diethylzinc [Zn(C2H5)2], which still provided high remanence (Br) and coercivity (Hcj) values of ∼1.43 T and ∼0.85 MAm−1, were molded to compression-type resin bonded Zn/Sm2(Fe0.9Co0.1)17Nx magnets with density values of ∼6.33 g cm−3. By optimizing the preparation conditions such as grinding, surface coating, and molding for them, the highest maximum energy product of (BH)max=186 kJm−3 for Hcj=0.73 MAm−1 was recorded among all kinds of the Sm–Fe–N based magnets reported to date. Furthermore, the excellent aging behavior of the bonded Zn/Sm2(Fe0.9Co0.1)17Nx magnets was observed after standing in air at ∼393 K and the thermal coefficient for permanent magnet was evaluated to be α(Br)=−0.04% K−1. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Gas source molecular beam epitaxy growth of TlInP (thallium indium phosphide) on (100) InP substrate is described. TlInP is an important constituent material of newly proposed novel infrared optical device material, TlInGaP, which can be lattice-matched to InP. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction reveals the (2×2), (2×4), and (4×2) streak patterns corresponding to the P-excess, P-stabilized and group-III rich surfaces, respectively. However, facet pattern emerges in the low temperature (380 °C) growth. This pattern is consistent with the scanning electron microscopy image; hatched pattern along the [011] direction, which is caused by insufficient migration of group III adatoms on the surface. Double crystal x-ray diffraction rocking curves for TlP on InP and TlInP on InP samples clearly show the peak from TlP and TlInP as well as that from InP substrate. The peak position is changed with Tl/In flux ratio. Photoluminescence emission is observed for TlInP grown on InP. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The 〉3·0 Ga chert sequence of the Gorge Creek Group is exposed at Ord Ranges about 50 km east of Port Hedland in the Pilbara Block. The chert sequence examined in this study is 15 m thick and consists of oxide-rich laminated chert, grey chert (silicified clastic rock), carbonaceous black chert and carbonate-rich laminated chert. Although the cherts have undergone postdepositional silica enrichment, such as cementation and metasomatic silicification, primary precipitation of silica at the site of deposition is indicated by abundant microstructures (mosaic and spherulitic structures). Other primary to early diagenetic components were carbonates, sulphates (gypsum and anhydrite) and organic matter. Although these mineral associations, on the whole, correspond to those of modern marine evaporites, they are different from modern equivalents with respect to abundant precipitation of amorphous silica and presumed primary precipitation of iron-carbonate (siderite). This feature is a possible manifestation of peculiar physicochemical conditions in the water mass from which the chemical sediments were precipitated; compared with modern ocean waters, the concentrations of Fe and Si were significantly higher and the pH value might have been lower. These conditions could be obtained by contributions of Fe- and Si-enriched hydrothermal solutions and continental run-off to the site of deposition.Grey cherts contain detrital quartz and altered Fe–Ti oxides and were formed in a period of input of terrigenous detrital materials. They are characterized by higher concentrations of TiO2, Al2O3, Cr, Ni, Zn, Rb and Zr compared with the other types of chert and by very low (〈 4) Al2O3/TiO2 values. These features are attributed to the supply of terrigenous detrital materials that contain abundant Fe–Ti oxides (ilmenite and titanomagnetite) and fine TiO2 particles. Such detrital materials might have been formed by extensive chemical alteration of source rocks and residual enrichment of Ti relative to Al.

Notizen: Short-wavelength X-rays (W Kα1: λ = 0.209 Å) have been used to collect higher-order reflections for studies of the electron-density distributions of silicon and diamond with high resolution. The sp3 bonding electron-density distributions of these materials are visible in the total electron-density maps synthesized by the maximum-entropy method (MEM) and also in the difference MEM maps synthesized by Fourier summation of Fmem(h) − Fcore(h), where Fmem(h) is the structure factor calculated from the MEM map and Fcore(h) is the structure factor calculated from Sicore and Ccore models, if very extensive data sets with higher-order reflections are used. These maps are more informative than the conventional difference Fourier map synthesized by Fourier summation of Fobs(h) − Fcore(h) using the observed structure factor Fobs(h) instead of Fmem(h). The present maps can be compared with certain band-theory calculations.

Notizen: Crystals of aldehyde reductase from a red yeast, Sporobolomyces salmonicolor, have been grown from an ammonium sulfate solution, pH 7.0, by means of the vapor-diffusion procedure. The crystals belong to the hexagonal system, space group P6122 or its enantiomorph, P6522, with unit-cell dimensions of a = 72.2 and c = 320 Å. The X-ray diffraction patterns extend to at least 2 Å resolution with the use of synchrotron radiation. The crystals are stable on exposure to X-rays and suitable for high-resolution X-ray structure determination.

Notizen: A new technique for making spheres of single crystals is briefly described. It is confirmed that this method is very effective when used to prepare spherical specimens of LaB6, a refractory material that is widely used as a thermo-radiated material.

Notizen: Abstract This paper presents an experimental study on the role of interstitial gas in the vibration-induced granular convection and heaping. Two kinds of experiments were made: (i) flow visualization of granular convection, and (ii) investigation of the effects of opening of the top of a vessel wherein granules are contained. It has been observed from the first experiment that uniform mobility of granular materials in the container results in a symmetric pair of convection rolls covering the entire range of the bed, which leads to the heap formation. The second experiment has revealed that, due to the difference in the vessel top opening, a large difference in the shape of the free surface occurs for some range of the granular bed height, suggesting that not only the magnitude of gas pressure, but also how the gas percolates through the granular bed play important roles in the heaping process.
