    Notes: Summary A parameterization of shortwave and longwave radiation fluxes derived from detailed radiative transfer models is included in a global primitive equation statistical-dynamical model (SDM) with two bulk atmospheric layers. The model is validated comparing the model simulations with the observed mean annual and seasonal zonally averaged climate. The results show that the simulation of the shortwave and longwave radiation fluxes matches well with the observations. The SDM variables such as surface and 500 hPa temperatures, zonal winds at 250 hPa and 750 hPa, vertical velocity at 500 hPa and precipitation are also in good agreement with the observations. A comparison between the results obtained with the present SDM and those with the previous version of the model indicates that the model results improved when the parameterization of the radiative fluxes based on detailed radiative transfer models are included into the SDM. The SDM is used to investigate its response to the greenhouse effect. Sensitivity experiments regarding the doubling of CO2 and the changing of the cloud amount and height are performed. In the case 2×CO2 the model results are consistent with those obtained from GCMs, showing a warming of the climate system. An enhancement of the greenhouse effect is also noted when the cloud layer is higher. However, an increase of the cloud amount in all the latitude belts provokes an increase of the surface temperature near poles and a decrease in all the other regions. This suggests that the greenhouse effect overcomes the albedo effect in the polar latitudes and the opposite occurs in other regions. In all the experiments the changes in the surface temperature are larger near poles, mainly in the Southern Hemisphere.

    Notes: The dispersion relations of oscillation modes in a piezoelectric slab with hexagonal symmetry are given, considering the slab infinite with respect to the axes x1 and x2 with the six-order symmetry axis perpendicular to the x1–x2 plane. Four types of modes are identified: two of them are transversal horizontal and the other two are associated to electrostatic potential waves which determine the longitudinal and flexural modes. The secular equations for these modes are given and numerical results for the piezoelectric transducer ceramic slab are obtained and compared to experimental results with a very good agreement. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The S=1/2, nearest-neighbor, kinetic Ising model has been used to model magnetization switching in nanoscale ferromagnets. For this model, earlier work based on the droplet theory of the decay of metastable phases and Monte Carlo simulations has shown the existence of a size dependent spinodal field which separates deterministic and stochastic decay regimes. We extend the above work to study the effects of an oscillating field on the magnetization response of the kinetic Ising model. We compute the power spectral density of the time-dependent magnetization for different values of the amplitude and frequency of the external field, using Monte Carlo simulation data. We also investigate the amplitude and frequency dependence of the probability distributions for the hysteresis loop area and the period-averaged magnetization. The time-dependent response of the system is classified by analyzing the behavior of these quantities within the framework of the distinct deterministic and stochastic decay modes mentioned above. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Experimental, analytical, and numerical results suggest that the mechanism by which a uniaxial single-domain ferromagnet switches after sudden field reversal depends on the field magnitude and the system size. Here we report new results on how these distinct decay mechanisms influence hysteresis in a two-dimensional nearest-neighbor kinetic Ising model. We present theoretical predictions supported by numerical simulations for the frequency dependence of the probability distributions for the hysteresis-loop area and the period-averaged magnetization, and for the residence-time distributions. The latter suggest evidence of stochastic resonance for small systems in moderately weak oscillating fields. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In the present work we analyze wave propagation in piezoelectric layered structures with special emphasis on semiconductor layered systems. The mathematical and physical formulation of the problem is stated according to the phenomenological theory of continuous media. The general solution of the system of equations for a piezoelectric material with cubic symmetry is given. The boundary conditions for mechanical displacements and elastic stresses, as well as the electrical quantities, are analyzed. The problem is split into two coupled system of second order ordinary differential equations: one for the displacement v1(z) and the electric potential ψ(z), and the other for the two remaining mechanical displacements v2(z) and v3(z). The dispersion relations are expressed through determinants because of their complexity, and the dispersion curves are numerically obtained. The obtained results, in the form of propagating waves along the structure, are discussed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The integral transform method is employed for the hybrid numerical-analytical solution of two-dimensional, steady-state heat conduction within extended surfaces of variable longitudinal profile and temperature dependent thermal conductivity. Numerical results are then obtainable with automatic accuracy, allowing for the establishment of benchmark results and for the validation of approximate solutions. Convergence rates are illustrated for longitudinal fins with trapezoidal and parabolic profiles, and for different values of the governing parameters, Biot number and aspect ratio. In addition, the classical one-dimensional approximate solutions are critically examined for these typical non-straight profiles, and the applicability limits are investigated.

    Notes: The integral transform method is employed in the analytical solution of the non-classical eigenvalue problem that appears in connection with the analysis of forced convection in ducts, including the effect of fluid heat diffusion in the axial direction. The related eigenfunctions are expanded in terms of eigenfunctions from a simpler auxiliary eigenvalue problem, and the original eigenvalues are determined from the associated matrix eigensystem analysis. Convergence rates of the proposed solutions are illustrated and reference results established for different values of the governing parameters.
