Notes: Abstract Bacteriological and physico-chemical parameters of 265 samples from 39 brands sold in 5-gallon plastic and glass bottles and 2-5 L plastic containers were analyzed to determine the quality of bottled water distributed in Mexico City. Tests included fecal and total coliform counts, alkalinity, total hardness, chloride, calcium and magnesium concentrations, pH and conductivity. Correlation and cluster analyses and ANOVA were carried out, and a comparison made of the averages with the maximum permissible levels established in the Official Mexican Norms. Concerning the investigated parameters no differences (p 〉 0.05) between the brands were found. Physico-chemical parameters were studied and all the samples were within the permissible limits. Most samples taken from the 5-gallon containers exceeded the maximum bacteriological limits. It was concluded that the bacteriological quality of the brands studied was extremely variable. Appropriate sanitary measures, should be established to control this aspect.

Notes: The recently developed tandem technique, mass spectroscopy with atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization (APCI-MS) coupled with direct flow injection, was applied to the determination of Bitrex (denatonium benzoate) and diethyl phthalate in ethanol. The compounds were indentified from their total-ion chromatograms(m/z 50-500) and, simultancously, quantified using selected-ion chromatograms recorded at m/z 223 for diethyl phthalate and m/z 325 for Bitrex. Operating conditions were optimized for soft ionization (positive ion-mode) with fragmentation limited to that necessary for analyte identification, which was by the external-standard method. Calibration curves were rectilinear in the concentration rages 2-30 μg ml-1 (Bitrex) and 0.075-1.2% v/v (diethyl phthalate); measurement precision (RSDs were 11.48% for Bitrex and 2.22% for diethyl phthalate), and detection limits (0.017 μg ml-1 and 0.010% v/v, respectively) were adequate for simiultaneous quantitation and with high sensitivity. The lack of any sample pretreatment and the use of flow-injection analysis meant that the procedure was moere straightforward and rapid than previously reported methods.

Notes: Raman scattering was used to characterize BaTiO3/YBa2Cu3O7−x thin film bilayer structure grown by pulsed laser ablation (PLA). The Raman spectra were compared with the x-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra. The Raman peaks due to the tetragonal phase of BaTiO3 (BTO) and to the 123 phase YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) were observed at room temperature. XRD results showed that the BaTiO3 thin film has highly c-axis oriented tetragonal phase and is fully epitaxial. However, some impurity phases were observed from the Raman spectrum of the BaTiO3 thin film. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Fungal biota, with special reference to the genus Penicillium, was studied in 52 samples of commercial cheeses (10 fresh, 17 semiripened and 25 ripened) made from different types of milk (cow, ewe, goat and mixed) produced in southern Spain. In 41 of the total of cheeses analyzed (79%) molds were isolated. Penicillium was identified in 63% of the samples, Mucor spp. in 27%, Geotrichum candidum in 17% and Cladosporium herbarum in 10%; eleven other fungal genera were detected ranging from 2 to 4%. Thirty-five species of Penicillium were analyzed with the following distribution: 7 in fresh cheese, 16 in semiripened cheese and 30 in ripened cheese. The incidence of Penicillium spp. was also greater in the cheeses with a higher degree of ripeness, i.e. 20% in fresh cheese, 71% in the semiripened and 76% in the ripened cheese.

Notes: The aetiological agents of the abdominal swelling affecting farmed larvae of gilt-head seabream, Sparus aurata L., were studied. Four Vibrio strains were isolated from larvae of S. aurata affected by this disease, and all strains reproduced the disease in healthy larvae under controlled infection experiments, producing a significant increase of the mortality rates compared to the control (non-inoculated larvae). Several enzymatic properties, which can act as .virulence factors, were demonstrated both in the extracellular products (ECPs) and In live cells of the strains tested. Histopathological examinations of the infected fish larvae revealed important changes of the anterior intestine and liver characterized by a marked hyperthrophy of the intestinal epithelium and hepatocytes, and by a separation of the mucosal and submucosal layers in the digestive tube. These histological alterations were associated with the constant presence of cocobacillar bacteria in the anterior intestine and in the liver. However, the precise pathogenic mechanisms of the strains tested have not been completely elucidated yet.

Notes: This paper reports preliminary studies designed to evaluate hybridization through natural mating and artificial insemination between female Penaeus japonicus Bate, 1888 and male Penaeus kerathurus Forskäl, 1775. Although both species were able to mature in captivity, natural copulation was not achieved.Different techniques, including manual squeezing in the base of the fifth pair of pereiopods, electrical stimulation and dissection, were used for the artificial insemination experiments. However, only dissection gave spermatophores. Stained sperm showed no malformations and its viability was very high. Seven out of 10 inseminations (70%) produced eggs, but the development of embryos was abnormal. It is suggested that the high genetic distance between these species is responsible for these results.

Notes: . Metacystis truncata, a prostomatid loricate ciliate, was found attached to Thalassia tesudinum, a dominant seagrass of the coral reef lagoons of Veracruz, Mexico. the morphology of the ciliate and its lorica were studied in living and stained specimens and in those prepared for scanning electron microscopy. the lorica is cylindrical (64.6-115μm) with a well-developed anterior neck and a sac reinforced by 15-26 rings. Cell body size is variable (19-91 μm live), from ovoid to elongate: the terminal protruding vacuole is conspicuous in small and medium-sized individuals; the macronucleus is terminal in the elongate forms, or located near the mid-body in the ovoid ones. This marine prostomatid colonizes both natural and artificial substrates such as narrow polyethylene strips placed in an aquarium. the highest density was found in the summer. the present study represents the first description of the lorica of M. truncata and the first record on T. testudinum shoots.

Notes: Abstract The acid-base behaviour of Loprazolam has been studied using an automated potentiometric titration system. The temperature was kept constant at 25 °C and the ionic medium was 0.1 mol dm−3 NaCl in different ethanol-water mixtures (5–20%). The values of the constants obtained at the different ethanol compositions have been extrapolated to give the corresponding stoichiometric constant in water, log β = 6.39 ± 0.15
