    Description: Images of comet C/1996 B2 (Hyakutake) taken during its close approach to Earth show differences in the distribution of gas and dust in the inner coma and reveal two arc-shaped molecular resonant emission features. The morphology of these features, as well as the apparent decoupling gas from dust in the inner coma, suggest that an extended region of icy grains surrounds the nucleus of Hyakutake and contributes substantially to the production of volatiles.     Notes: Radio–frequency magnetron sputter epitaxy was employed for the synthesis of n–type modulation doped Si/Si1−xGex heterostructures. Si channels were grown coherently on sputtered, compositionally graded Si1−xGex buffers of low defect density, and remotely doped with phosphorus by plasma assisted gas phase doping. Magnetotransport measurements on these films revealed Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations in the longitudinal and the integer quantum Hall effect in the transverse magnetoresistance, demonstrating the presence of a two–dimensional electron gas. At T=1.6 K and sheet densities of 1012 cm−2, electron mobilities as high as 15 800 cm2/V s give evidence of the excellent structural and electronic properties achievable by the sputter growth technique. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Deposition of submonolayer coverages of C on Si(100) prior to Ge growth leads to the formation of Ge quantum dots below the critical thickness for Ge islanding on bare Si(100). In situ scanning tunneling microscopy reveals a high density of irregularly shaped islands for Ge coverages from 2.5 to 4 ML. Island sizes are broadly distributed between 10 and 25 nm. Keeping the C coverage constant and increasing the Ge coverage from 2.5 to 4 ML, the islands increase in height but their density remains constant (∼1011 cm−2). At a Ge coverage of 5.8 ML, formation of larger (105)-faceted islands is observed. Their density is reduced by a factor of 4 compared to smaller Ge coverages. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the nonfaceted islands are preserved after Si capping. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: X-ray small- and medium-angle scattering of partially ordered or semicrystalline materials is composed of background scattering from the form scattering of the components and from the amorphous phase and of peaks from the scattering of the crystallites. By the slit geometry of X-ray diffractometers constructed for registration of small- and medium-angle X-ray scattering, the diffuse scattering and the peaks are distorted and the peak positions and half-widths are changed. A program module based on the Akima interpolation [Akima (1970). J. Assoc. Comput. Math. 17, 589–602] is proposed for calculation of the first derivative of the complete smeared scattering curve, which is then explicitly used in direct collimation correction procedures. The desmearing of scattering curves from semicrystalline starch samples proves the convenience of the method for low-noise conditions and exhibits a significant gain of measuring time in comparison with data of comparable accuracy but measured with Soller-slit collimation systems or desmeared with direct methods using frequency filtering.

    Notes: Abstract An essentially new method to relate a number of taxa on the basis of a predefined set of dichotomous properties (i.e. either present or not present) is described. The basic step of the analysis is the derivation of a sophisticated distance measure to describe the pairwise dissimilarities quantitatively on the basis of the individual properties. The presentation of the dissimilarity matrix by a tree-like structure is an obvious step implicated by the the distance measure and is related to the widely used method of successive joining of nearest neighbors with respect to the distances. The distance measure makes no use of stochastic or other mathematical models of evolutionary processes and can be interpreted best in terms of discrete information theory.

    Notes: Abstract. The evolutionary relationships of ribosomal proteins from eubacteria, archaea, eukaryotes, chloroplasts and mitochondria were examined by their degree of conservation, their structural and functional properties and by the occurrence of conserved structural elements. The structural domains formed by the different protein families were studied. The occurrence of monophyletic groups was investigated for each protein family within the archaea. Phylogenetic trees were constructed between these organisms and together with the homologous sequences of the other phylogenetic domains. All organisms belonging to the archaea clearly formed a monophyletic group. The conserved sequence motifs were checked for the potential to form similar secondary structural elements.

    Notes: Abstract.  Carpet sea anemones of the genus Palythoa are common inhabitants of reef crest environments in the Florida Keys reef tract. Through a unique assimilation mechanism, Palythoa spp. entomb carbonate sediment within their tissues. The amount of sediment assimilated is significant, averaging almost 45% of wet tissue weight. Palythoa spp. assimilate all available minerals on the reef. Aragonite, magnesium calcite, calcite and minor quantities of siliciclastic components are all assimilated in proportions comparable to their content in adjacent sediment sinks. There is also no preference in terms of skeletal composition; coral grit, coralline red algae, Halimeda and other allochems are all equally assimilated into Palythoa spp. tissue. The only preference is particle size. Sediment extracted from tissue samples is generally ?125 μm in size, far finer than ambient sediment found adjacent to Palythoa spp. colonies (predominantly 〉500 μm). Much of the finest sediment extracted from Palythoa spp. tissue is composed of elongated crystal aggregates of aragonite. These particles appear to have been produced in situ through biologically influenced mineralization. Aggregates nucleated on exogenous sediment and attained their elongated form as assimilation proceeded. When Palythoa spp. colonies die, the assimilated sediment and the crystal aggregates are released back into the reef environment. The eventual fate of this material has yet to be determined.
