Description: The sphingolipid metabolite sphingosine-1-phosphate (SPP) has been implicated as a second messenger in cell proliferation and survival. However, many of its biological effects are due to binding to unidentified receptors on the cell surface. SPP activated the heterotrimeric guanine nucleotide binding protein (G protein)-coupled orphan receptor EDG-1, originally cloned as Endothelial Differentiation Gene-1. EDG-1 bound SPP with high affinity (dissociation constant = 8.1 nM) and high specificity. Overexpression of EDG-1 induced exaggerated cell-cell aggregation, enhanced expression of cadherins, and formation of well-developed adherens junctions in a manner dependent on SPP and the small guanine nucleotide binding protein Rho.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Lee, M J -- Van Brocklyn, J R -- Thangada, S -- Liu, C H -- Hand, A R -- Menzeleev, R -- Spiegel, S -- Hla, T -- DK45659/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- GM43880/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- HL49094/HL/NHLBI NIH HHS/ -- etc. -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1998 Mar 6;279(5356):1552-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Physiology, University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Farmington, CT 06030, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9488656" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: Abstract The influence of silver, in the range of 0.02 wt% to 0.07 wt%, on the electrochemical and corrosion properties of Pb–Ca–Sn–Al grid alloy in sulphuric acid solutions at room temperature was investigated by potentiodynamic and potentiostatic methods. The introduction of Ag into a common grid alloy of Pb–Ca–Sn–Al confers some important features on the alloy. Potentiodynamic anodic polarisation measurements provided a qualitative overview of the activating, passivating and transpassivating processes which correspond to Pb → PbSO4, PbSO4 → PbO2 reactions respectively. Cyclic voltammetric measurements provided information on the effect of Ag on the oxidation of PbSO4 to PbO2. The addition of Ag refined the grains and enhanced the passivation of the electrode and its corrosion resistance. A decrease in the oxygen evolution overpotential and an increase in the hydrogen evolution overpotential with the additions of Ag were also observed during the experiments.

Notes: Abstract The influence of silver, in the range of 0.02 to 0.07wt%, on the electrochemical and corrosion properties of Pb–Ca–Sn–Al grid alloy in sulphuric acid solutions at room temperature was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). EIS was used to study the effect of silver on the surface layer(s) of an electrode under different conditions, while the oxide layers produced on the working electrode surface were examined by SEM. The addition of silver in the alloy inhibits the reactions of Pb to PbSO4 and PbSO4 to PbO2 and produces a more dense oxide layer which could enhance the corrosion resistance of the alloy.

Notes: New copolymers were prepared from methacrylate and methacrylamide derivatives of cholic acid and methacrylic acid by free radical polymerization in solution. The copolymers were characterized by solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The copolymers all have a single glass transition temperature located between the glass transition temperature of the two corresponding homopolymers. The copolymers were found to be random, and the chemical composition in the final products was close to the original monomer composition in the feed prior to polymerization. Water absorption measurements showed that the water absorption capacity of the copolymers increases from about 10% to about 35% with increasing molar ratio of methacrylic acid in the copolymers.
