Notes: Various recombinant Hansenula polymorpha strains were developed and compared for their level of expression of the anticoagulant hirudin. H. polymorpha DL1-57 harboring an autonomously replicating sequence, HARS36, efficiently expressed the gene for recombinant hirudin. The effect of methanol oxidase (MOX) on the expression of the hirudin gene in H. polymorpha DL1-57 was studied, and the fermentation strategies coupled with the MOX activity and an antioxidant, tocopherol, were also examined.

Notes: Abstract A distributed feedback (DFB) laser module has been developed for 2.5 Gbs-1 optical transmission systems. The DFB laser has a multiple-quantum-well (MQW) active layer and a planar buried heterostructure (PBH) for a low threshold current and stable singlemode operation with low chirping. A PBH DFB laser module with a single-mode fibre pigtail and an optical isolator was designed and fabricated by employing a single lens and a laser welding method. The fabricated MQW PBH DFB laser module is shown to be a suitable light source for 2.5 Gb s-1 optical transmission systems with a minimum received power of-33 dBm after 47 km conventional optical fibre transmission.

Notes: Abstract A polarimetric fibre laser sensor with narrow polarization mode beat frequency bandwidth is demonstrated using a polarization-maintaining Er-doped fibre. The slope coefficients of 124kHz°C-1 cm-1 and 137kHz μm-1 are obtained for temperature change and longitudinal strain measurements, respectively. A new configuration of polarimetric fibre laser sensor is also demonstrated using a conventional Er-doped fibre as a gain medium and a short length of polarization-maintaining fibre as a sensing part.

Notes: Abstract High-speed mesa type SAGCM avalanche photodiodes for 2.5 Gb s-1 optical receivers have been realized for the first time. The device is designed by dimensional analysis based on the electric field distribution in a multiplication layer and a charge plate layer. Very low dark current and high gain are obtained with an active region of 30 μm diameter. From the 1.55 μm wavelength 2.488 Gb s-1 transmission experiment, sensitivity of-33.6 dBm is measured using pseudorandom (223–1) NRZ patterns.

Notes: Abstract The linear electrooptic (EO) effect of poled polymer thin film is measured in the coplanar-electrode structure. The optical geometry of the coplanar-electrode thin-film setup is analysed theoretically to find a relationship between the linear optical parameters and the EO modulation intensity. EO modulated intensity is measured as a function of the direction of incident light polarization relative to the macroscopic optic axis, also as a function of optical bias determined by quarter-wave plate. Comparison of experimental measurements with the theoretical analysis shows good agreement.

Notes: Abstract Ternary Pt-Cu-Fe alloy catalysts, useful for low temperature fuel cells, were prepared from aqueous media, followed by heat treatment at 900 °C for various heating periods. Supported metal crystallites were characterized with various techniques including XRD, XPS, TEM and ICP-AES. XRD patterns indicate that the lattice structure of platinum changes from a face-centred cubic to a contracted facecentred tetragonal structure as it forms an alloy. As the heating period increases, the extent of formation of an ordered alloy increases and the formation is completed in 2.5 h, as confirmed by the intensity of superlattice diffraction lines. The presence of different oxidation states is confirmed by XPS and the amount of higher oxidation state is reduced by heat-treatment, but there is no evidence of development of a new photoelectron peak or shift in binding energy by alloy formation. For the electrochemical reduction reaction of oxygen in fuel cell operation, ordered alloys have shown improved catalytic activity compared to platinum alone. After the stability test in hot phosphoric acid, the ordered structure is preserved even though a significant amount of transition metal is dissolved, and some increase in particle size in the heat-treated catalysts is observed.

Notes: Abstract The Al-12Si-5Fe-3Cu-1Mg(wt%) alloy was rapidly solidified by centrifugal atomization. The microstructural characteristics of rapidly solidified powder and the microstructure changes with heat treatment were investigated in terms and related to powder size. The microstructures of the powder consisted of dendritic α-Al, eutectic phase, Cu-rich phase, and needle-like intermetallic compounds. These phases were much finer than that of ingot cast structure and the size decreased with increasing cooling rate. The X-ray diffraction of the atomized powders revealed the presence of non-equilibrium 3-(AlFeSi) intermetallic phase. This phase appeared to transform to an equilibrium β-(AlFeSi) phase by heating at temperatures above 470°C. The extruded rod which was hot extruded at 360°C with an extrusion ratio of 40:1 also revealed the presence of the β-(AIFeSi) intermetallic phase. Using DSC, the exothermic peak due to precipitation from the supersaturated α-Al matrix was observed in the range of 200–250°C during continuous heating of atomized powder, and the size of the peaks increased with decreasing powder size.

Notes: Abstract Using Auger electron spectroscopy and electrochemistry we confirm that ruthenium is spontaneously deposited on platinum single-crystal faces from ruthenium(III) chloride solutions in perchloric acid. The deposit is catalytically active towards methanol present in electrolytic media. On the Pt(111) surface - the most active catalyst for the oxidation process - the data show that the packing density of ruthenium is 9.9±1.5% and increases with ruthenium concentration in the electrolytic bath, confirming the previous electrochemical coverage estimate. In the most favorable instances the ruthenium enhancement factor, the current ratio due to methanol oxidation with and without ruthenium on the surface, is equal to15 (at 0.490 V vs. RHE reference on Pt(111)). We believe this study is an important addition to our long-range efforts in investigating surface structure effects in platinum-ruthenium heterogeneous electrocatalysis.

Notes: Abstract. Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films (200–400 nm in thickness) have been grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on glass substrates without a post-deposition anneal. The electrical and optical properties of these films have been investigated as a function of substrate temperature and oxygen partial pressure during deposition. Films were deposited at substrate temperatures ranging from room temperature to 300 °C in O2 partial pressures ranging from 0.1 to 100 mTorr. For 300 nm thick ITO films grown at room temperature in oxygen pressure of 10 mTorr, the electrical conductivity was 2.6×10-3 Ω-1cm-1 and the average optical transmittance was 83% in the visible range (400–700 nm). For 300 nm thick ITO films deposited at 300 °C in 10 mTorr of oxygen, the conductivity was 5.2×10-3 Ω-1cm-1 and the average transmittance in the visible range was 87%. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements showed that the RMS surface roughness for the ITO films grown at room temperature was ∼7 Å, which is the lowest reported value for the ITO films grown by any film growth technique at room temperature.
