Notes: Abstract. Meiotic segregation patterns of chromosomes 3 and 9 were analyzed in sperm of two translocation carriers (t(3;9)(q26.2;q32) and t(3;9)(p25;q32)) by triple-color fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with a telomeric DNA probe in addition to two centromeric probes. The frequencies of each sperm product resulting from alternate or adjacent I, adjacent II and 3:1 segregation in a t(3;9)(q26.2;q32) translocation carrier were 88.35%, 5.44% and 5.94%, respectively. On the other hand, the frequencies of each sperm product in a t(3;9)(p25;q32) translocation carrier were 89.23%, 6.02% and 4.48%, respectively. Of all the sperm products, the frequency of normal or chromosomally balanced sperm in a t(3;9)(q26.2;q32) and a t(3;9)(p25;q32) were 52.49% and 47.25%, respectively. The frequencies of each sperm product resulting from various segregations were different between both carriers and significantly deviated from the expected frequencies. Additional dual-color and triple-color FISH were performed to analyze aneuploidy rates for chromosomes 12, 17, 18, X and Y in order to detect any interchromosomal effect; no evidence of an interchromosomal effect was found.

Notes: Abstract The sex pheromone blend of the butterbur borer, Ostrinia zaguliaevi (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) was analyzed by means of gas chromatography-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD), GC-mass spectrometry and a series of wind-tunnel bioassays. Four EAD-active compounds were detected in the female sex pheromone gland extract, and these were identified as tetradecyl acetate (14:OAc), (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:OAc), (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (E11-14:OAc) and (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (Z11-14:OAc). The average amounts ± s.d. of the four compounds in a single sex pheromone gland were 7.9±3.7 ng, 10.1±3.2 ng, 1.1±0.5 ng and 11.6±5.1 ng, respectively. In a wind-tunnel bioassay, the ternary blend of Z9-, E11- and Z11-14:OAc at a ratio found in the sex pheromone gland (45:5:50) elicited the same behavioral responses from the males as did virgin females and pheromone gland extract. Removal of any single compound from the ternary blend significantly diminished the pheromonal activity, whereas addition of 14:OAc to the ternary blend had no effect on the males' behavioral responses. Therefore, it was concluded that the sex pheromone blend of O. zaguliaevi is composed of Z9-14:OAc, E11-14:OAc and Z11-14:OAc at a ratio of 45:5:50.

Notes: Abstract Ingredient substitutions for agar or carrageenan in artificial diets for lepidopterous larvae were evaluated. A sodium polyacrylamide polyacrylate gelling agent, Water-Lock G-400, was compared with agar for solidifying diets of the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni (Hübner), omnivorous looper, Sabulodes aegrotata (Gueneé), and the western avocado leafroller, Amorbia cuneana Walsingham. Water-Lock G-400 is considerably less expensive than agar or carrageenan, it does not require heating to gel, and it is made from a dependable supply of agricultural starch. Sabulodes aegrotata pupae from larvae reared on agar were significantly heavier than those reared on Water-Lock G-400. However, the remainder of the variables observed (larval survival, developmental times, fecundity, sex ratio and pupal weights for A. cuneana and T. ni) were all independent of diet. Decreasing the total amount of ingredients in a Water-Lock-G-400 diet produced fewer and smaller T. ni pupae than did an agar diet when the larvae were reared using a mass production protocol. However, these lower values were still above acceptable levels for mass production and reduced the cost of diet production by 65%. Further ingredient substitutions impaired larval development (i.e., replacing pinto beans with soy protein or combinations of soy protein and α-cellulose), while others did not (i.e., excluding pinto beans and reducing water content and replacing pinto beans with α-cellulose or corn cob grits). Moisture control by adding corn cob grits to diets increased the yield of pupae, while removing water from diets increased survivorship and the yield of pupae.

Notes: Abstract An antimony microelectrode was prepared by quenching a molten Sb–Sb2O3 mixture (2% Sb2O3). The local pH in the vicinity of a cathode evolving hydrogen gas was directly measured using the microelectrode. The local pH during electrolysis of KCl-glycine aqueous solutions was increased by proton consumption; however, the increment decreased with increasing concentrations of glycine, a buffering agent. The diffusion-limiting current density of hydrogen evolution involving proton reduction was controlled by the concentrations of the proton-donating species: protonated-glycine +H3NCH2COOH and H3O+ ions. A plot of the current density against the sum of the concentrations gives a single straight line passing through the origin. The phenomena are discussed in terms of electrodeposition processes of base metals.

Notes: Abstract A new CGH (computer generated hologram) common path interferometer, which can be used for testing an aspherical mirror with large aperture, is proposed. This interferometer does not have a circle of least confusion, and a spatial filter can be used effectively to stop extraneous lights so that interferograms with good contrast can be obtained. The phase shifting technique can be easily applied to the interferometer. The method of designing and making the CGH zone-plate is described.

Notes: Abstract A new technique to measure the radius of a concave mirror is proposed, in which the radius is calculated from the difference of the two interferograms obtained before and after shifting the sample perpendicular to or along the optical axis. By comparison of these two shifting directions, it is shown that since the amount of shift can be measured accurately and the result is insensitive to the tilt during the shifting, better accuracy can be obtained by shifting the sample along the optical axis.

Notes: Abstract Chemicals releasing oviposition by an Asclepiadaceae feeder,Ideopsis similis, were identified from a host plant,Tylophora tanakae. A strong positive response was evoked by a methanolic extract of the plant, which proved to contain multiple stimulants. A mixture of two phenanthroindolizidine alkaloids, (+)-isotylocrebrine and (−)-7-demethyltylophorine, isolated from organic fractions, elicited significant ovipositional responses from females.

Notes: Abstract. Although molecular phylogenetic studies of cyanobacteria on the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence have been reported, the topologies were unstable, especially in the inner branchings. Our analysis of 16S rRNA gene phylogeny by the maximum-likelihood and neighbor-joining methods combined with rate homogeneous and heterogeneous models revealed seven major evolutionary lineages of the cyanobacteria, including prochlorophycean organisms. These seven lineages are always stable on any combination of these methods and models, fundamentally corresponding to phylogenetic relationships based on other genes, e.g., psbA, rbcL, rnpB, rpoC, and tufA. Moreover, although known genotypic and phenotypic characters sometimes appear paralleled in independent lineages, many characters are not contradictory within each group. Therefore we propose seven evolutionary groups as a working hypothesis for successive taxonomic reconstruction. New 16S rRNA sequences of five unicellular cyanobacterial strains, PCC 7001, PCC 7003, PCC 73109, PCC 7117, and PCC 7335 of Synechococcus sp., were determined in this study. Although all these strains have been assigned to ``marine clusters B and C,'' they were separated into three lineages. This suggests that the organisms classified in the genus Synechococcus evolved diversely and should be reclassified in several independent taxonomic units. Moreover, Synechococcus strains and filamentous cyanobacteria make a monophyletic group supported by a comparatively high statistical confidence value (80 to 100%) in each of the two independent lineages; therefore, these monophylies probably reflect the convergent evolution of a multicellular organization.
