    Notes: Relict eclogites and associated high-pressure rocks are present in the Eastern Segment of the SW Swedish gneiss region (the tectonic counterpart of the Parautochthonous Belt of the Canadian Grenville). These rocks give evidence of Sveconorwegian eclogite facies metamorphism and subsequent pervasive reworking and deformation at granulite and amphibolite facies conditions. The best-preserved eclogite relics suggest a clockwise P–T –t history, beginning in the amphibolite facies, progressing through the eclogite facies, decompressing and partially reequilibrating through the high- and medium-pressure granulite facies, before cooling through the amphibolite facies. Textures demonstrate the former coexistence of the plagioclase-free assemblages garnet+clinopyroxene+quartz+rutile+ilmenite, garnet+clinopyroxene+ kyanite+rutile, and garnet+kyanite+quartz+rutile. The former existence of omphacite is evidenced by up to 45 vol.% plagioclase expelled as small grains within large clinopyroxene. Matrix plagioclase is secondary and occurs expelled from clinopyroxene or in fine-grained, granulite facies reaction domains formed during resorption of garnet and kyanite. Garnet shows preserved prograde growth zoning with rimward increasing pyrope content, decreasing spessartine content and decreasing Fe/(Fe+Mg) ratio, but is partly resorbed and reequilibrated at the rims. P–T estimates from microdomains with clinopyroxene+plagioclase+quartz+garnet indicate pressures of 9.5–12 kbar and temperatures of 705–795 °C for a stage of the granulite facies decompression. The preservation of the prograde zoning suggests that the rocks did not reside at these high temperatures for more than a few million years, and chemical disequilibrium and ‘frozen’ reaction textures indicate heterogeneous reaction progress and overstepping of reactions during the decompression through the granulite facies. Together these features suggest a rapid tectonic exhumation. The eclogite relics occur within a high-grade deformation zone with WNW–ESE stretching and associated oblique normal-sense, top-to-the-east (sensu lato) displacement, suggesting that extension was a main cause for the decompression and exhumation. Probable tectonic scenarios for this deformation are Sveconorwegian late-orogenic gravitational collapse or overall WNW–ESE extension.

    Notes: To constrain the tectonic history of the Pan-African belt in Tanzania, we have studied the P–T  evolution of granulites from northern and eastern Tanzania representative for a large part of the southern Pan-African belt of East Africa (e.g. Pare, Usambara, Ukaguru and Uluguru Mountains). Thermobarometry (conventional and multireaction equilibria) on enderbites and metapelites gives 9.5–11 kbar and 810±40 °C during peak metamorphism at 650–620 Ma. This is consistent with the occurrence of both sillimanite and kyanite in metapelites and of the high-P granulite facies assemblage garnet–clinopyroxene–quartz in mafic rocks. Peak metamorphic conditions are surprisingly similar over a very large area with N-S and E-W extents of about 700 and 200 km respectively. The prograde metamorphic evolution in the entire area started in the kyanite field but evolved mainly within the sillimanite stability field. The retrograde P–T  evolution is characterized by late-stage kyanite in metapelites and garnet–clinopyroxene coronas around orthopyroxene in meta-igneous rocks. This is in agreement with thermobarometric results and isotopic dating, indicating a period of nearly isobaric and slow cooling prior to tectonic uplift. The anticlockwise P–T  path could have resulted from magmatic underplating and loading of the lower continental crust which caused heating and thickening of the crust. Substantial postmetamorphic crustal thickening of yet unknown age (presumably after 550 Ma) led subsequently to the exhumation of high-P granulites over a large area. The results are consistent with formation of the Pan-African granulites at an active continental margin where tonalitic intrusions caused crustal growth and heating 70–100 Ma prior to continental collision. The P–T–t path contradicts recent geodynamic models which proposed tectonic crustal thickening due to continental collision between East and West Gondwana as the cause of granulite formation in the southern part of the Pan-African belt.

    Notes: Abstract. Attached intact leaves of Schefflera arboricola grown at three different photon flux densities (PFDs) were subjected to 24-h exposures to a high PFD and subsequent recovery at a low PFD. While sun leaves showed virtually no sustained effects on photosystem II (PSII), shade-grown leaves exhibited pronounced photoinhibition of PSII that required several days at low PFD to recover. Upon transfer to high PFD, levels of nonphotochemical quenching in PSII as well as levels of zeaxanthin were initially low in shade leaves but continued to increase gradually during the 24-h exposure. The xanthophyll cycle pool size rose gradually during and also subsequent to the photoinhibitory treatment in shade leaves. Upon return to low PFD, a marked and extremely long-lasting retention of zeaxanthin and antheraxanthin was observed in shade but not sun leaves. During recovery, changes in the conversion state of the xanthophyll cycle therefore closely mirrored the slow increases in PSII efficiency. This novel report of a close association between zeaxanthin retention and lasting PSII depressions in these shade leaves clearly suggests a role for zeaxanthin in photoinhibition of shade leaves. In addition, there was a decrease in β-carotene levels, some decrease in chlorophyll, but no change in lutein and neoxanthin (all per leaf area) in the shade leaves during and subsequent to the photoinhibitory treatment. These data may be consistent with a degradation of a portion of core complexes but not of peripheral light-harvesting complexes. A possible conversion of β-carotene to form additional zeaxanthin is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract  Genetic variation among 15 accessions of Native American maize from the Great Plains was investigated using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). RAPDs revealed very high levels of polymorphism among accessions. Banding patterns ranged in percentage polymorphism from 46.7% to 86.2% with an overall mean of 70.7% for the primers analyzed. The construction of genetic relationships using cluster analysis and principal coordinates analysis revealed that RAPDs are successful in confirming hypothesized relationships and in identifying misclassified specimens. Furthermore, the phenogram fails to reveal a strong correspondence between genetic relationships and the geographical position of Native Americans prior to contact. This provides support for the hypothesis that multiple introductions of maize into the Great Plains via trade may have resulted in the great morphological variation found among accessions in the region. Based on these data, it is unlikely that a separate Great Plains race of maize can be distinguished. In general, we conclude that RAPDs are potentially very useful in organizing seed collections and understanding intraspecific genetic differentiation.

    Notes: Abstract Rainfall partitioning into throughfall and stemflow was studied in a diverse and in a mono specific stand of secondary vegetation in Eastern Amazonia. The nutrient concentrations in the water were analysed in order to quantify the related hydrochemical fluxes. Secondary vegetation forms the fallow in the local shifting cultivation system and is usually dominated by shrubs and trees. Phenakospermum guyannense (Strelitziaceae), a banana-like herb, is one of the predominant non-woody species. The study was conducted during an 18-month period in a 2.5-year-old relatively species-rich stand and a 10-year-old stand dominated by P. guyannense. In a year with 1956 mm of rainfall 65% (1281 mm) of this quantity reached the soil as throughfall in the diverse stand and 38% (743 mm) in the mono specific stand. Stemflow was estimated to be 23% and 41% respectively. P. guyannense and Banara guianensis (Flacourtiaceae), a tree species, were causing these high funnelling effects. In the young diverse stand B. guianensis had a stemflow of more than 200 l year−1 and P. guyannense had a median flux of 77 l year−1 per pseudostem. In the older stand the taller plants of P.␣guyannense collected 644 l year−1 per pseudostem on the median. The reason for these high values could be the banana-like growth form of P. guyannense and the crown morphology of B. guianensis, which has inclined branches. The low proportion of throughfall and the high stemflow values differ from all previous studies in Amazonian primary forests. The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean strongly influenced the nutrient fluxes via rainfall at our study site. This becomes obvious from the high Na and Cl fluxes with rainfall (19.7 kg Na ha−1 year−1, 37.2 kg Cl ha−1 year−1) which were approximately equal to the Na and Cl fluxes with the sum of throughfall and stemflow for both stands. K fluxes in throughfall and stemflow in both stands were higher than in rainfall by a factor of 8. The high K enrichment during the crown passage is assumed to be caused by a␣high K concentration in the leaf tissue resulting in enhanced leaching from the leaves. In months with low␣rainfall the concentrations of Ca, Mg, S and Cl in throughfall of the diverse stand were significantly higher than in months with high rainfall. This was mainly due to vegetation burns in the dry period, which resulted in ash deposition on the canopy and subsequent wash-off and solution of ash particles.

    Notes: Abstract The temporal characteristics of the visual systems of deep-sea crustaceans were examined at varying light levels. Experimental organisms were collected off Hawaii and southern California in 1991 and 1992, and continually maintained in the dark. At the University of California Santa Barbara Marine Laboratory, the temporal components of both visual interneuron activity and electroretinograms (ERGs) of adult Gnathophausia ingens were tested at threshold and with background light levels up to 6 log units above threshold. To compare these responses with those of mid-water organisms inhabiting shallower depths, the temporal characteristics of the ERGs of Oplophorus spinosus and juvenile G. ingens were assessed. Adults of both species showed little or no change in the time components of their responses when light-adapted, except for the response latency. There was also no evidence of a circadian rhythm in visual sensitivity. O. spinosus, a vertical migrator, and juvenile G. ingens, which inhabit a shallower depth than the adults, exhibited more rapid responses than adult G. ingens. These varying responses are considered adaptations to the differences in light levels at the characteristic depths of the organisms.

    Notes: Abstract Apoptosis is a morphologically distinct form of programmed cell death that plays an important role in the growth regulation of a variety of tissues and also in the elimination of self-reacting immunocompetent cells. Several techniques for the qualitative and quantitative detection of this process have been established; recently, an in situ nick end-labelling technique based on the detection of DNA fragmentation, which is a molecular characteristic of apoptotic cell death, was described. Applying this method to paraffin sections of human tissues, sensitivity was observed to be inconsistently low with regard to the expected number of apoptotic cells. In the present study we show that irradiation of the tissue sections in 10 mM citrate buffer, pH 6.0, by microwaves at 750 W considerably enhances the sensitivity of this nick end-labelling technique.

    Notes: Abstract Results of the 1996 field season (April-November) of the cloud chemistry program starting in 1992 at the Mt. Brocken are presented. The mountain site (1142 m a.s.l.) is located in the Harz Mountains/Germany. For a large part of the database (about 40%), both cloud water and drizzle and/or precipitation were present at the same time. A separation into two groups was done: non-precipitating clouds and mixed category of events. More than 2000 one hour samples were collected and analysed for major ions. The mean cloud water pH for the frostfree period in 1996 was 3.9. Histograms giving the distribution of pH values show that the pH values of samples from non-precipitating clouds ranges from 2.5 up to values 〉 8 and that the distribution is bimodale. For the 1996 field season period as a whole, pH values of cloud water were lower than those of mixed samples (cloud water, drizzle, precipitation) at the Brocken site. This was related to higher concentrations of all ions in cloud water. Cloud base measurements using a ceilometer confirmed the correlation between liquid water content and height above cloud base and consequently the influence of sampling height relative to the cloud base on the total ionic content of cloud water.

    Notes: Abstract Ripe fruits of Citrus paradisi Macf. and their juices contain high concentrations of scopolin (β-glucopyranoside of 7-hydroxy-6-methoxycoumarin). The identity of the aglycon being scopoletin was proven analysing extracts of β-glucosidase-treated fruit preparations with TLC, HPLC and GC-MS techniques. The naturally occurring glycoside was identified as the glucoside of scopoletin comparing it with authentic scopolin. The intake of scopolin of either grapefruits or juices thereof leads to a renal excretion of its aglycon as a glucuronide. The excretion is complete within 24 h. An enzymatic hydrolysis of the glucuronide produces scopoletin (i.e. aglycon) which can be quantified by HPLC. Mass spectra revealed that scopoletin releases one methyl- and two carbonyl-groups. The molecule finally breaks into fragments of 51 and 69 atomic mass units.
