Notes: The dependence of the magnetoresistance ratio, ΔR/Rs, on the Ni content has been studied in Fe/Al2O3/Ni1−xFex (0≤x≤1) tunneling junctions. The value of ΔR/Rs at 4.2 K increased with increasing x and exhibited a maximum of ∼35% at x=0.8. The result is discussed by taking into account the spin-polarization of ferromagnetic electrodes. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magneto-optical Kerr spectra of ultrathin Co films grown on Cu(001) surfaces have been measured in situ. The growth mode and the crystal structure have been investigating by reflection high-energy electron diffraction observation. A 20-A(ring)-thick fcc Co grown on Cu(001) had a lateral lattice constant of 3.59±0.01 A(ring), which was about 1.4% expanded compared with that of the bulk fcc Co. There was a remarkable difference above 4 eV in ωσyz spectra between 20- and 1000-A(ring)-thick films. ωσyz spectra for 20-A(ring)-thick Co film showed a resonance-type structure at around 5 eV. It is considered that the structure is caused by the lower energy shift of the 1→6 interband transitions due to the narrowing of the 3d bands. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The concentration dependence of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) at the second peak in the Fe–Co–Ni/Cu multilayers and that of anisotropic magnetoresistance in the Fe–Co–Ni ternary alloy films and ribbons in the fcc γ-phase structure have been systematically examined at 4.2 K and room temperature. The concentration dependence of the GMR ratio is well explained by taking into account the spin-dependent interface and bulk scattering and the spin-independent scattering. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Electronic structures of 5, 10, 15, 20-zinctetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP)/metal (Au, Ag, Al, Mg) interfaces prepared in ultrahigh vacuum were investigated by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). We found that the electronic energy levels of ZnTPP align to the vacuum level of substrate metal, with a constant energy shift of vacuum levels across the interface. These findings cannot be explained by the simple models assuming vacuum level alignment at the interface. We also found that sample exposure to oxygen induces energy level shift in close relation with change of substrate work function at oxygen exposure. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The photoluminescence (PL) of strained Si1−xGex/Si(001) quantum wells was measured in an edge-emitting configuration. The no-phonon PL was found to be polarized largely along the quantum-well plane at low temperature, whereas such in-plane polarization was diminished as the sample temperature was increased. Exciton dissociation occurring at higher temperature is responsible for the diminution of PL polarization, which is consistent with an analogous reduction of in-plane polarization due to field ionization of excitons. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Two purified diets supplemented with 0 or 20 000 IU vitamin D3 kg−1 of diet were fed to amago salmon, Oncorhynchus rhodurus (Jordan & McGregor), for 22 weeks. The feeding stopped when fish with deficiency signs including reduced growth, and caudal region and fin tip damage increased in number. Deficient fish had a thinned epidermis consisting of atrophied and necrotic epidermal cells over the basal cells. In lesions of the caudal peduncle, the skin and the underlying musculature were extensively necrotized. The liver showed degenerated and necrotic hepatocytes. Respiratory epithelium and cardiac muscle fibres were swollen. Hypocalcaemia was evident. No pathological changes were found in bone, eyes, brain and alimentary tract. The control groups fed a nutritionally complete diet grew well and displayed no pathological changes. The pathological changes were reversed after 4 weeks of feeding of vitamin-D3-suppliemented diet.

Notes: Abstract. In the spring of 1992 and 1993, an epizootic with severe mortality occurred among cultured goldfish. Carassius auratus (L.), in Aichi and Nara Prefectures in Japan. A herpes-virus was isolated from moribund goldfish that induced cytopathic effects in FHM and EPC cells. The isolate was sensitive to IUdR (5-iodo-2-deoxyuridine), acid (pH 3) and ether. Transmission studies confirmed the pathogenicity of the viral isolate for goldfish while it was not pathogenic for fancy carp, Cyprinus carpio L. Diseased fish had no visible external signs except for listlessness, but internally there was softening and discolouration of the spleen and kidney, and necrotic foci in the haematopoietic tissue, splenic pulp, pancreas, and lamina propria and submucosa of the intestine. Electron microscopy revealed enveloped visions ranging from 170 to 220nm in diameter with hexagonal nucleocapsids (115–117nm edge-to-edge diameter). The disease has been designated as herpesviral haematopoietic necrosis (HVHN), and to date, is the only herpesvirus infection to be described in goldfish.

Notes: Abstract. Gm immunoglobulin allotypes have been studied in 1157 individuals of seven Northern Selkup populations, which account for 80% of the entire population of this west Siberian tribe. This study confirms that the northern Selkup populations are a Caucasoid-Mongoloid hybrid. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the IGHG genes using double BamHI-SacI digests, performed on 475 DNA samples, allowed us to describe nine new BamHI-SacI haplotypes (BS47 to BS55), eight of them being characterized by IGHG gene deletion or duplication: G1 (BS49) or G4 (BS55) deletion, G4 duplication (BS51), GP-G2-G4 multigene deletion (BS50), duplication (BS48, BS53 and BS54) or triplication (BS52). A new rare Gm haplotype 15,16*;1,17;23 has been found associated with BS52. The BS51 haplotype characterized by a duplicated G4 gene (additional 7.85 kb G4 band identifying a new G4*C5 allele) was always found associated with the Gm 5*;3;23 haplotype. A high RFLP diversity has been observed for the Northern-Mongoloid haplotype Gm 15,16*;1,17;.. which was found (1) with the BS27 haplotype characterized by a 3-exon hinge G3 gene, (2) with two different GP-G2-G4 multigene duplications, BS53 and BS54 haplotypes, which differ by the size of the duplicated G4 genes, and (3) with the BS55 haplotype characterized by a G4 deletion. In the Northern Selkups, haplotypes with duplicated genes were observed at a higher frequency (24%) than haplotypes with deleted genes (6%).

Notes: Abstract This paper contains three results. First, the rate constants for the tunneling reaction HD + D → H + D 2 in solid HD increase steeply with increasing temperature above 5 K, while they are almost independent of temperature below 5 K. A mechanism of a vacancy–assisted tunneling reaction is proposed to account for this temperature dependence. Second, a hydrogen atom and a hydrogen molecule form a van der Waals complex in the Ar matrix at 20 K, where the tunneling reaction HD + D →H + D 2 takes place in this complex. The analysis of well–resolved ESR spectra of the complex determined the distance between a hydrogen atom and a hydrogen molecule as 2.3 – 2.5 Å. Third, the decay rate constants of $${\text{H}}_{\text{2}}^ - $$ anions in solid parahydrogen decrease with decreasing temperature below 6.6 K, attain the minimum value at 5 K, and then increase with decreasing temperature in the range of 5 → 2.7 K. The abnormal temperature dependence of the decay rate constants below 5 K is ascribed to a phonon–scattering process of quantum diffusion.
