Notes: Abstract In this paper, we propose some techniques for injecting finite state automata into Recurrent Radial Basis Function networks (R2BF). When providing proper hints and constraining the weight space properly, we show that these networks behave as automata. A technique is suggested for forcing the learning process to develop automata representations that is based on adding a proper penalty function to the ordinary cost. Successful experimental results are shown for inductive inference of regular grammars.

Notes: Abstract Estrogen replacement therapy is effective in the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis, and a direct action of 17-β-estradiol (17βE2) on osteoblastic and osteoclastic cells has been demonstrated. The inhibition of bone resorption by ipriflavone (IP), an isoflavone derivative devoid of estrogenic properties but active in potentiating the effects of estroge on bone tissue, has been shown in in vitro and in vivo studies and confirmed by clinical data. To investigate the molecular mechanisms that underlie IP effect, we studied the possible interactions of IP and its four main in vivo metabolites (I, II, III, and V) with the estrogen receptor (ER) in the human preosteoclastic cell line FLG 29.1, whose growth and function are modulated by the compound. In parallel experiments, the human breast cancer cell line MCF7 was also analyzed. IP binding sites were demonstrated in the nuclear fraction of FLG 29.1 cells. 17βE2 and other steroid compounds failed to displace IP binding to intact FLG 29.1 cells. Similarly, IP and metabolites I, III, and V were not able to displace 17βE2 binding to intact MCF7 cells, whereas metabolite II showed an IC50 of 61 nM. 17βE2 binding to FLG 29.1 cells was increased after preincubation with metabolites I, III, and V. IP and its metabolites did not induce FR-dependent gene expression in FLG 29.1 and MCF7 cells transfected with a reporter gene and an estrogen response element (ERE). These results suggest that IP effects on osteoclast precursors are not mediated by a direct interaction with the ER, even if a crosstalk between the mechanisms of action of IP and 17βE2 cannot be excluded.

Notes: Abstract  Asplenium trichomanes L. subsp. trichomanes spermatozoids are spirals of about five turns. Keels link the elements of the microtubular ribbon with the plates of the lamellar layer (LL) which are uninterrupted, parallel and curved with an inner angle of about 150°. Electron-opaque filaments connect the microtubules of the multilayered structure (MLS) and the osmiophilic crest, the LL and the MLS-associated mitochondrion and the latter and the plasmalemma. The nucleus occupies the 2.5–3 posterior turns and has an inner honeycomb-shaped chromatin mass and an outer highly condensed chromatin mass with randomly scattered electron-transparent areas. The basal bodies of the ca. 50 flagella are bounded by a reticulum of granular material which forms a plug inside their proximal region; the proximal region of the flagellum has a 9 + 0 pattern. The axoneme has a 9 + 2 pattern.

Notes: Abstract  Molecular dynamics (MD) calculations were performed on two peroxidases, lignin peroxidase (LiP) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP), in the presence of the two endogenous calcium ions. The resulting averaged structures were compared to the structures obtained in the absence of the calcium ions. The overall protein folding was not affected by the presence or the lack of the calcium ions, while the active site was perturbed. In particular, on the distal side, a sizeable rearrangement of the distal histidine was observed in the absence of the calcium ions. These structural rearrangements are critically discussed with respect to the enzymatic mechanism.

Notes: Abstract  The electrostatic contribution to the reduction potentials due to the unit charges of ionizable residues largely explains the span in redox potentials in a series of high-potential Fe4S4 iron-sulfur proteins and mutants. This appears to be a lucky case in which other contributions (in general) larger than that due to unit charges cancel out.

Notes: Abstract This study was undertaken to evaluate whether the pyrolytic carbon coating of polyethylene terephthalate induces complement activation. Complement activation induced by pyrolytic carbon-coated polyethylene terephthalate (PET+PC) in comparison with uncoated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was assessed on whole blood collected with heparin. The activation of the classic pathway was evaluated by C4d fragment enzyme immunoassay. The activation of the alternative pathway was evaluated with Bb fragment enzyme immunoassay. The results show that uncoated PET activates the alternative pathway, but not the classic one. PET+PC does not induce complement activation, not even through the alternative pathway. Pyrolytic carbon coating therefore contributes to improving blood compatibility.
